Indian shipyards & suppliers need to switch to modular construction and government should take steps on elimination of bureaucracy as much as possible to build ships faster. Also, indigenous components should be prioritized to minimize wasting money & time on bidding & negotiations.

Kick in more competent scientists & engineers inside naval defence R&D labs coz demand for newer techs by Navy will evolve every year.

Hopefully, around 5 years later, we will able to see some visible changes.

Damn, this is just awful to even look at, I think the problem is with the procurement process of engines and armaments, they need to be ordered as soon as the project gets on the drawing tables, obviously ship building techniques are lagging quite behind as well, I guess that was bound to happen when we aren't used to building even cargo ships. Should have signed some deal regarding it, with either japan or south korea for training workers and engineers.

Why AS565 Panther Helicopter Is A Good Option For The Indian Navy?
The Indian Ministry of Defense (MoD) has officially issued a Request for Information (RFI) for over 230 new helicopters for the Indian Navy this week. The new RFI constitutes one of the biggest global tenders issued for military helicopters recently.

In detail, the Indian Navy is interested in procuring 123 naval multi-role helicopters (NMRH) with anti-submarine warfare capabilities, and 111 armed light naval utility helicopters (NUH). The total value of the two contracts is estimated at over $10 billion.

Airbus has been proposing the Panther helicopter for the NUH programme. AS565 MBe, also known as the Panther, is the state-of-the-art multi-role helicopter that was designed for a multitude of naval and coast guard missions such as maritime surveillance, search and rescue, casualty evacuation, offshore patrolling and counter-terrorism.

The AS565 MBe is powered by two Safran Arriel 2N turboshaft engines for reliable performance in high and hot conditions. It features modern cockpit avionics that include an automatic flight control system (AFCS) and flight management system.

AS565 MBe is highly effective in anti-surface unit warfare missions (ASuW), including over-the-horizon targeting (OTHT) for ships with long-range anti-ship missiles. By acting as the ship’s principal weapon system, it can search, classify, shadow and strike with precision well beyond the horizon. At Best Endurance Speed (VBE) the aircraft has a loiter time in excess of four hours.

The helicopter’s use of a hydraulically-activated harpoon with deck-lock securing enables the AS565 MBe to land and take off from ship decks regardless of the wind direction and this makes the helicopter just the choice for India’s needs keeping in mind the rough seas the Indian Navy has to operate in

AS565 MBe Panther will also be very easy to maintain as the modular mechanical assembly design, fiberglass Starflex rotor heads, composite tail rotor blades and airframe and 100-percent composite Fenestron contribute to significant reductions in maintenance time and costs, he added.

The helicopter performs a wide variety of roles. In its anti-surface unit warfare role, the AS565 MBe is highly effective in warfare missions, including over-the-horizon targeting for ships with long-range anti-ship missiles. By acting as the ship’s principal weapon system it can search, classify, shadow and strike with precision with stable hovering capabilities. In its anti-submarine warfare avatar, with an endurance of four hours and its capability to carry up to two torpedoes / Depth Charges, the AS565 MBe significantly multiples a surface ship’s ability to conduct Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) missions

The NMRH are being procured particularly to enhance the Navys anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare capabilities. The Navy has been pressing the government to procure new utility and multi-role helicopters to add teeth to its existing capability and replace its ageing fleet of choppers but the procurement process has seen years of delay.

Airbus has been proposing the Panther helicopter for the NUH programme. The parts for the Airbus Helicopter and Mahindra contract will be produced at the Mahindra facility in Bengaluru, and shipped directly to the Airbus Helicopter production line in Marignane, France, where they would be integrated with the rest of the airframe assembly, forming a critical part of the Panthers sold worldwide.

The deal has ensured that Mahindra Aerostructures became the first Indian company to receive a direct manufacturing contract from Airbus Helicopters as a Tier-1 supplier. The Indian firm is expected to gradually emerge as the global single source supplier to Airbus Helicopters for these parts.

Diagrams of EMAL Subsystems which are currently in research with DRDO.

Electromagnetic aircraft Launch System is integrated system used for launching naval aircraft. To accelerate the aircraft to launch speed; EMALS uses linear motor. At this state, Double sided linear synchronous motor (DSLSM) looks to be a far better as well as an improved alternative owing to higher potency and better power issue, which might plainly scale back the capability of power offer and facilitate the ability electrical converter design. DSLSM is made with long stator coil and short moving permanent magnet rotor.

EMALS (Electromagnetic launch system) has many advantages over the presently inducted Steam primarily based Launch system (Steam Catapult) such as it offers feedback due to which controlling acceleration is possible along with 30% more launch energy .

EMALS is low maintenance system since its moving part never touches the stationary part of the system which reduces the mechanical wear; it improves reliability of the system as well as enhances overall efficiency of ship .

With the recent development in EMALS; the Indian navy desires to use this state of art to enlarge the capability and efficiency of launching. EMALS utilize linear motor (LM) for launching purpose as well as it serves the purpose of braking and retracting, thereby reducing all the auxiliary elements and reducing the complexity of the general system.

EMALS working is generally based on four main subsystems:

Power source subsystem
Power conditioning subsystem
Launch motor subsystem
Closed-loop control subsystem

Indian MoD Signed A Contract With Turkey’s TAIS Shipyards For 5 Fleet Support Vessels

The TAIS consortium, in partnership with HSL, won the Indian Ministry of Defence’s tender to design and build five FSVs (also known as Fleet Support Ship – FSS) for the Indian Navy in May 2019, but the contract was significantly delayed for cost and political reasons, including the Indian authorities’ dissatisfaction with Turkey’s active military and technical cooperation with Pakistan. Prior to the selection of the Turkish TAIS project, HSL offered the Indian Navy to build FSVs in partnership with South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), but eventually the HHI proposal was rejected by the Indian authorities for cost reasons. The value of the contract signed back in February is 160 billion rupees (about $2.1 billion). The supply vessels will be built by HSL with the assistance of Turkish shipyards. The TAIS consortium includes Turkish shipbuilding companies Anadolu Shipyard (ADiK, lead developer of the project), Istanbul Shipyard, Sedef Shipyard and Selah Shipyard. The construction of the first FSV is to begin at HSL in Visakhapatnam at the end of 2020 with the delivery to the Indian fleet in 2024, with the remaining four units to be delivered at 10-month intervals.

SDR NC , Software Defined Radio Naval Communication , For Indian Navy . Two Kolkata class Destroyer's fired Missiles with the instruction From another Kolkata class Ship using this SDR . This is a very important technology which will enable Net Centric Warfare for IN . with the combination of Airborne SDR , Ground Based SDR , Ship based SDR , India can Control all of its assets using one single platform .

DRDO initiated the development Quantum communications so SDR + Quantum communications means A hack free Environment to connect all Platforms

BrahMos_missile_boat.jpg

India’s Next Generation Missile Boats will make Chinese Aircraft Obsolete.

Indian Navy plans to induct six new next generation Missile Boats/Vessels under make in India program. The missile vessel primary mission indicated as surface warfare unlike most other missile boats perform only Anti shipping.previously Indian navy used the Russian missile boats that can bring down entire Karachi and did awesome work in the 1971 WAR. and get the Nickname Killer Squadron. thus later replaced by the corvette’s.

It seems navy didn’t satisfied those Corvette’s they need new generation missile Boats. but here the missile vessel have 8 VLS or Tubes for Surface attack this can be added with either Nirbhay LACM ( Land Attack Cruise Missile ) or Combination of Brahmos land attack and anti shipping cruise missiles. the Nirbhay can strike target far more than 1200 kilometers with impressive loitering capability. also flies at low level and reduced RCS. so hard to be tracked by enemy air defence radars.

Mach 3 Capable Brahmos Cruise Missile is a fearsome Weapons system which even a Captain of an Aircraft carrier will fear due to its kinetic punch coming from its 300kg warhead and its ability to sink largest of the warships with ease. With MTCR restriction gone 800km BrahMos MK4 will be formidable Surface to Surface weapon system too which can be used to attack port and Naval facilities when required

Missile boats will have reduced RCS. so it will be hard to be detected by enemy ships. and along with lower acoustic signatures to make the ship hard to be detect by sonar’s. both of these specification indicates the ship hull should be stealth in design and material.

These ship will be able accomodate some 100 Navy personells include 11 officers. so the ship size provide beds and other living features and stocks food.

Range and Endurance

The ship should be attain the max speed of 35 knots. and at the cursing speed of 25 knots in any rough conditions such as sea state 4 or seat state 7 the ship should be perform it’s primary tasks as per the indicated speed. also the ship can be contentiously cruise at the speed of some 10 knots about 8 hours. and the ship should be in the sea for continuously next ten days and can able to come back to the port with 25% fuel reserve. the missile boat can also be take resupply and refuel from Tankers and Replenishment vessels to further increase the endurance and range.
Weapon Pack

Missile boats will carry 8 surface to surface missiles. but didn’t mentions stocks or reloading.

These vessel also equipped with PDMS ( Point Defence Missile System ) that can perform targets in all sides that is provide cover of 360 degree. can also be engage the sea skimming and low flying AShM who flies below 3 meters above sea level. here again the RFI didn’t mentions reloading, Range and Anti Aircraft capability. as of now Barak 8 is the only option for this.

The ship can also need a Gun that can engage both surface bombardment anti air and anti missile engagements. along with separate fire control radar.and mentioned the range more than some 15 kilometers I think OTO Melara 127/64 LW

They also informed the ship need a CIWS system which can be a stand alone version that can have Fire cotrol radar and EO ( Electro Optical ). along with target destruction of 360 degree. but the CIWS information can be normal like all others like range and detection.

Defensive Packs

The ship should have Chaff flares for confusing incoming enemy missiles. known as the ECM (elctronic Counter measure ). that can provide cover to the entire ship. the ships also accomodate small fire arms such as can hold Assault rifles for sailors and heavy machine gun and Anti material rifles for special operations. the ship also can smell the sonars who are all tracking the ships and can have high powerful search lights that can be operated by remotely. that will be very useful for search and rescue missions. the ship also can have upto three big size PTZ camera’s and two more fixed camera’s that should be work both night and day.

Radars
The ship can have main Fire Control radar that can control entire Weapons and guide them the correct directions and targets. the FCR should can accommodate with the naval comabat management system which can integrate all ships under one umbrella known as C4ISR. the ship also can have radars for Air surveillance for keep the air space under watch and another radar for surface search to keep watching surface ships movements. the ship also can have the proper Navigational system quoted in the RFI.

The dimensions and ship displacement is not listed that means the ship manufacture should accommodate all the above in the ship. no matter of dimensions and displacement.
