The fourth and fifth Project 11356 frigates, built for the Russian Navy at the Kaliningrad Yantar shipyard, might be sent to India. A source in the Defense Ministry informed Lenta.ru of this. Such a move will make it possible to equip the ships with turbines of Ukrainian manufacture that were previously ordered but which Kiev now refuses to supply since they would be used for equipping Russian warships. The first three ships will be transferred to the Russian Navy on time.

“We have serious problems with the fourth and fifth frigates” (Admiral Butakov andAdmiral Istomin –note by Lenta.ru), said the source. “It is possible that they will be handed over to India. This will make it possible to change the passport of the end customer and receive the Ukrainian turbines for them.” According to the publications interlocutor, the military will resolve the fate of the frigates.

Business works beyond politics..
Even in the middle of US Russia skirmish...Russia renewed the contract to sell Uranium to USA.

Transferring the ships will enable Ukraine to sell turbines. Its good business.

If so..I would say..Ukraine has more balls than France (Mistral screwup with Russia)

If there is such a thing from OEM or if the OEM is rigid, We wont be hearing such a talk in the media..floating their ship far off to Indian shores.

The news in media is how certain things are saturated.

INS Viraat to turn into a museum

INS Viraat, the oldest aircraft carrier in the world, will soon be converted into a museum. The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) authorities have received an in-principle approval from the Ministry of Defence to convert the Centaur-class aircraft carrier into a museum. “The Centre has agreed to hand over INS Viraat to the state on the request of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu,” the APTDC executive director Amarendar said. The warship will be docked at the shores of Kakinada port in coastal Andhra to serve as a tourist attraction. It is scheduled to be decommissioned in 2016. The state government is planning to invest over Rs 20 crore to convert it into a museum without tinkering with is main structure. The museum will be entirely developed and maintained by the government without involving any private player. Viraat was completed and commissioned in 1959 as the Royal Navy’s HMS Hermes and was transferred to India in 1987. In April 1986, India had signed an agreement with Britain to acquired HMS Hermes. It was part of the action during the Falklands war in 1982. After refits and new equipment being fitted on Hermes, it was commissioned as INS Viraat on May 12, 1987. Originally, the aircraft carrier was scheduled to be decommissioned in 2009, but with the INS Vikramaditya’s induction being delayed, Viraat underwent a series of refits and continued its service.

What For? Leave them for himself. Frigates good, new. We'll build others to ourselves. Two years later, Russia will have its own production of turbines.

India in talks with Russia to lease new modern, world-class nuclear attack submarine



NEW DELHI: India is in final talks with Russia to lease a new nuclear attack submarine, giving a much needed boost to its depleting underwater fleet. Signaling a difference in approach by the Modi-led government, India is now looking to lease a newly built, customised submarine, unlike in the past when older vessels were refurbished and handed over.

Several sources related to the project that ET spoke with confirmed that talks on leasing a new submarine under the 'Chakra 3' project are in advanced stages and that the issue will be discussed during Prime Minister Modi's visit to Russia this week.

India looking for more Talwar class ships: Navy vice chief

New Delhi: India is exploring the possibility of getting more Talwar class ships and was in talks with Russia to see if it acquire the technology for Grigorivich class frigates, the navy vice chief, Vice Admiral P Murugesan, said on Tuesday. He, however, clarified that India will not be importing the ships. "As per the maritime perspective plan, we have to build a certain number of ships in a certain time...we are exploring the possibility to expedite (acquisition of) certain number of ships," he told reporters here. He said exploratory talks were on with Russia, adding that "it will not be an import". India has been stressing on domestic defence production under the Make in India programme, an important aspect of which is to get technology transfers and inviting foreign firms to manufacture in India. The Grigorivich class frigates are improved variants of the six Talwar-class (Russian classification: Krivak-III) frigates the navy obtained between 2003 and 2013. The maritime capability perspective plan of the Indian Navy envisages a 198-ship force by 2027, up from the current 137 vessels. According to reports, Russia has evaluated three private yards for their potential to build these frigates: Larsen and Toubro`s Katupalli shipyard at Ennore, Tamil Nadu; Pipavav Shipyard in Gujarat; and Cochin Shipyard Ltd. (CSL) in Kochi, Kerala.

India To Upgrade Delhi, Talwar Class Destroyers For $ 472 Million

Indian Defense Acquisition Council has approved upgrading of Delhi and Talwar Class warships including weapons and sensors for INR 2990 crores (US $472 million). The Indian Navy is eyeing to increase its capability. The weapons might include surface- to-air missiles for the Delhi class warships that would be bought from Russia. The Indian Navy has prepared a maritime infrastructure perspective plan to improve maintenance and operability of naval assets, the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral R K Dhowan had said in May this year. “It has to be seen in the context of improving the battle readiness of the ever-increasing fleet of ships, submarines and aircraft which the navy has and will acquire in the near future,” he said. Indian Navy is also in talks with Russia for 3 Grigorivich-class frigates, an improved version of the six Talwar-class frigates the Navy obtained between 2003-13.

Delhi's were commissioned in late 90;s and the Talwar batch 1 in 2003-04. They are already 12 years in commission and its not a bad time to upgrade. Both have the Fregat radar from russia and will be easier to go with Shtil- VLS than Barak-8. I hope the upgrade also adds Brahmos to these ships. Hopefully the ATLAS TAS also goes in during the upgrade.
