Bangalore: The Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) at Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has revealed that it has developed a low-cost, indigenous radar system, which will match and even surpass the Israeli Phalcon Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS).

''DRDO is equipped to develop an indigenous radar system at substantially low-cost by using technologies developed for indigenous AEW&CS,'' said a CABS official. An indigenous airborne early warning and control system (AEW&CS), to be based on Embraer-145 platforms, is being readied for delivery by 2011. The system will be developed at a cost of Rs 1,800-crore.

This CABS- developed indigenous system alone is capable of creating business opportunities worth Rs500-600 crore for SMEs in the country. CABS officials said its various work centres at DRDO are already tapping around 50-60 SMEs and PSUs to develop the indigenous system.

Some of these SMEs include Astra Microwave, Alligator Designs, Mistral Solutions, CMC, BEL, BDL, Chaturvedi Tools, SM Creative, Cornett, Data Patterns and Ayur.According to DRDO sources, the Indian Air Force may eventually be interested in acquiring at least 20 such systems.

India took delivery of its first AWACS aircraft in May 2009, part of a $1.1-billion defence deal with Israel. The system is meant to detect aircraft and monitor troop movements and enemy communications at distances of hundreds of kilometres.

The indigenous AEW&CS, to be mounted on three Embraer-145 jets, ''will be very advanced with the latest image processing facilities and better software systems compared to foreign sophisticated radar systems,'' according to DRDO chief controller (R&D) Prahalad .Scientists at CABS and its work centres at the LRDE, Defence Avionics Research Establishment, Defence Electronics Research Laboratory, DEAL at DRDO have developed indigenous software for tactical battle management and signal processing, which can be used in radars.

Reports now suggest that DRDO may be looking for a foreign partner to help CABS optimise time and cost involved in integrating systems and evaluation for the AEWC&S.

25 to 30 are just too many, although this is good system to support Israeli AWAC, even 8 to 10 are enought for our IAF........in next 5-10 years......

although i want some indian AWAC for our AC.......

AWACS is Max fly hour of 14 hours and same amount of time for service them, so we need that range..!

Note: it is my personal thinking not the Nation's will..!

i think my post deleted? why any one replay to me please...

10 of these would do, because once they are inducted the DRDO will look for a larger platform awacs possibly on the 777, 737 or 787.

Numbers doesn't matter as of now. It's the performance of TD which will in-light the future. If the TD performs satisfactorily as per IAF then as per plan, CABS will move to platform like 'B-737' or 'A-319'. At that time, this AEW will get upgraded to AEW&C, which will mean no more Phalcons. This very condition will lead to lot of drama. Wish CABS comes out with a system glitch free and advanced enough to compel IAF say " Ok, induct it".

Well the DRDO is designing a AEW&C to complement Phalcon. Numbers are imortant for this...the system must be atleast comparable to the Erieye system.

There's been some frenetic activity at the Center for Airborne Systems (CABS) in Bangalore, where scientists are developing India's indigenous airborne early warning & control (AEW&C) system. According to the latest DRDO newsletter, there has been a flurry of senior-level visits to the lab recently ostensibly to validate what's been done so far, and right before the next big step is taken. The visitors included Air Vice Marshal Daljit Singh, Asst Chief of Air Staff (Operations) on July 17, Air Vice Marshal RK Sharma, Asst Chief of Air Staff (Plans) on July 22 and finally Air Marshal NV Tyagi, Deputy Chief of Air Staff on July 29. That's quite a few visits in quick succession, and certainly suggests that CABS finally has something to "show". A team from Embraer has been embedded with CABS ever since DRDO and the Brazilian aircraft and systems manufacturer formally teamed up back on February 5, 2005.

CABS Director Dr S Christopher writes in the latest issue of Vayu that the CABS/Embraer AEW&C aircraft is expected to be available and operational in 2012.

enlightened1! The visits by high profile sadly are an eyewash! incidentally i believe Dr.christopher also designed some LCA mmr systems. what happens is that there will be a ppt presentation, and a display of systems developed so far ,followed by chai, biskoot and sumptuous lunch. Inorder not to hurt, most visitors and committee memebers will be polite. They try to avoid leg pulling questions like where are we? when is the possible date of completion of proto (positively)..when will be the integration, flight testing and radar evaluation. and validation of algos ..etc.. the committed dates keeps getting extended... No doubt developing an AEW& C that too AESA based is no small task ,but there has to be accountability and corrective mechanism in case of bottlenecks..which was found lacking in LCA programme. The committee chairman who reviews the progress has to do some hard hitting review..otherwise it will be a four blind men and an elephent story! There lies the difference between ISRO and other orgs. ISRO FABs are really fabulous.Hope vice admiral (retd) Raman puri is actively involved in the programme progress and review committee..

Hi Venkat,
I see your point but what's being reported in the article is that there have been many high profile visits in a very short period. That's uncommon else it wouldn't have been reported. Who knows maybe they have something to show this time. The points you have put forward are very likely to be true..but maybe things have changed now?
Regards,
E1
