As much as I love the Gypsy, I cannot understand why JKP, IA, CRPF and every agency out there is unable to find another replacement.

:crying:

Why not Mahindra Marksman for example? Purpose built OEM built jeep with armour module .... why Gypsy?
They will be replaced by Tata Merlin eventually. 👍
In some roles I’m sure but this LSV (light supply vehicle) contest has been going on for many years now and it doesn’t seem like there will be any progress soon.

Well JKP & CRPF are replacing old Rakshaks with Scorpio Rakshak Plus.
Army replacing Gypsies with Safari Storme & Rakshak Plus.
So things will take time as these replacements take place in phases. After Pulwama big share of money spent on larger APCs like TATA Mobile Bunker & Ashok Leyland MBPV. Bullet proofing of those sky blue coloured CRPF Trucks is also being done.
IMO Marksman is very expensive replacement for Gypsy & doesn't fall into same category. As of now CRPF's new Marksman and Sherpa vehicles are issued to QATs only.
it’s true that after Pulwama something changed and you see a LOT of up-armouring of ground vehicles in the UT- almost all the Gypsys in use by the IA, JKP, CAPFs etc In frontline roles have received after market bullet resistant panels. Some of them in a pretty crude manner but it’s better than nothing.

The MPVs and Gypsys have also seen after-market riot (stone pelter) protection in the form of mesh screens for windows, lights, vehicle fitted cameras etc.

Aside from that the security forces have also applied similar treatments to the stallion and 3-ton soft skin trucks they use in the UT.

it’s quite rare These days to see a soft skinned vehicle turn up at an encounter site

That said, these kind of after market modifications can only be so useful and if it’s true that steel penetrators are becoming more widespread amongst terrorists in JK (speculated at Handarwa) then this has to be a huge concern and only OEM armoured vehicles are going to cut it.

There has been an influx of new Marksmen, Scorpio plus , TATA and AL MPVs but the continued use of the Gypsy as well as soft skinned busses for personnel transport is highly disturbing and I hope we aren’t about to see another series of attacks on convoys with the crescendo being another Pulwama.

there’s been progress and lessons have been learnt but clearly not enough applied.

Because it is the cheapest and still working... Police do not have to or never go off-road and cross country so why do they need powerful and heavy engine vehicles. Most of the time it has to do the shopping and traveling duty for some inspector or IPS officer's wife.

Spare the country please.
You need to differentiate the roles Gypsy is used in currently.

the role you are talking about (general duties and rear echelon stuff) is the GSV (general service vehicle). It’s used for administration roles, staff positions etc and doesn’t need to be armoured and won’t be used on the frontlines of a conventional war (we’ve seen it used in JK though). This is what the GS800 (GS=general service) ie the TATA safari storme of which the IA has 4000+ in service/on order. (Funny the IA chose to get this gypsy replacement role filled first but that’s maybe for another time ).

in the frontline roles especially in CT/COIN roles Gypsy was/is being used as a strike and assault vehicle- a role it isn’t suitable for today as explained above.

long term the gypsy will likely be replaced by 5-6 different more specialist vehicles as the Army had just used it as a one fit (cheap) solution across the board

As I’ve said for a while- Sadars have no issues with wearing the ACHs as they did with the Model 1974 so Patka is entirely redundant now.

There's always mix random stuff in our Army. It's so difficult to conclude about what they prefer.
