Army to deploy robots to fight terror in Kashmir

An army proposal, projecting a requirement of 544 robots, has been approved by the defence ministry, paving the way for the indigenous development of such machines, army officials said.

Indigenously built robots, capable of delivering ammunition at intended locations, will soon be used by the Army in its fight against terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.

An army proposal, projecting a requirement of 544 robots, has been approved by the defence ministry, paving the way for the indigenous development of such machines, army officials said.

The army’s proposal for adopting robotic security and surveillance stresses that the footprint of terror has expanded from jungles and rural areas to urban sectors, necessitating the induction of the systems in the force.

“The way the situation is evolving (in J&K), it may just be a matter of time when security forces as a whole, and Rashtriya Rifles (RR) in particular, will be facing the threat in built-up and super built-up areas,” the army said, making a strong case for robotic platforms.

Involved in carrying out scores of operations daily, the RR is an elite counter-terrorism force raised in the nineties. “These robotic surveillance platforms can be extensively used by the RR forces…for gathering real-time input prior to manual insertion,” says an army note.

The “lightweight and rugged” robots will consist of several subsystems such as surveillance cameras and transmission systems with a range of 200 metres. The army’s requirements state that the robots should be able to “deliver suitable ammunition…e.g. stun grenade.”

The approval for the robotic surveillance platform has been granted under the ‘Make’ category of acquisition in the Defence Procurement Procedure 2016 that lays down that only Indian vendors are eligible for the projects.

The army has also factored in the possibility of two or more teams operating jointly in a target area. “A second unit which can be operated alongside the first unit by a single operator with the same remote (having at least dual display screen) should also form part of the system,” the note adds.

The force has been using a locally-produced remotely operated vehicle, Daksh, for handling improvised explosive devices. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, Daksh can climb stairs, has three-hour endurance on battery, can be operated with remote within a range of 500 metres and can lift 20 kg loads.

RR is para military.
No it's not! There are only two Paramilitary forces in India and they are:

1. Assam Rifles
2. SFF (Special Frontier Force) also known as the Establishment 22.

RR is now part of the Army and under the MoD but with a few changes in its organization like no heavy weapons etc and they are manned completely by troops and officers from various regiments of the Indian Army.

There is no direct recruitment into the RR. All officers and jawans are on deputation for 2-3 years. The RR units are permanently stationed in J&K, but the troops are rotated meaning sent back to their regiments on completion of their tenures. They also get 25% additional pay compared to their counterparts.

See, Ghataks are a 20-man strong sub unit of some of the toughest infantry soldiers selected from within the infantry battalion itself. Every battalion has a Ghatak platoon.

This platoon is trained for special ops (not the Special Forces kind of ops though) and are sent for specific missions which could include ambushes, raids on enemy com centers and artillery gun positions, tac HQs, ammo/supply dumps, deep recce, and so on. Ghataks can be given tasks in COIN ops too like ambushes and raids on militant hideouts etc.

It is most likely that the huge number of terrorists ambushed and killed along the LoC lately were by the Ghatak platoons of the battalions deployed there.

Nope. Not as yet. The problem is that Ghataks are sent for specialized training including commando course, sniper course, mountain/jungle warfare and so on that take time. Since troops are posted to RR battalions only for a limited period, they cannot be sent out of battalions for long stretches thereby reducing the combat strength of battalions as their primary task is COIN ops like ambushes against terrorists, raids on their hideouts and CAS ops in the Valley that normal infantry soldiers are well trained to do anyway.

Remember, RR battalions have been raised and trained specifically for COIN ops in J&K whereas Ghatak platoons of the infantry battalions are primed to operate in all types of environments.

Para military means any unit that is armed like a military unit but doesn't have its mandate . Paramilitary units in India come under central home ministry control and or cabinet secretariate. (outside of military c&c)

1. Nsg
2. Bsf
3. Cisf
4. Crpf.
5. SFF/SG
6. ASSAM RIFLEs
7. RR
8. RaF
9. Itbf
. All paramilitary units.

Ghataks were born out of a need for an elite a scout sniper type platoon for every battalion. They provide lrrp, qrt and sniper support to battalions.

Sorry but you're off the mark by a long shot.

1. Nsg - Neither CAPF (Central Armed Police Force) nor Paramilitary. It has a 'special forces' mandate.
2. Bsf - CAPF
3. Cisf - CAPF
4. Crpf - CAPF
5. SFF - Paramilitary Force
6. ASSAM RIFLEs - Paramilitary Force
7. RR - Army
8. RaF- CAPF (a specialised wing of the CRPF)
9. Itbp - CAPF

There are only two Paramilitary Forces (Ser 5 and 6 above).

Any reason why encounters in Kashmir start/happen more frequently on weekends? Do these guys surface for Friday prayers & thats how they get tracked? I have seen typically Tueday to Friday are relatively quiet ..its Saturday to Monday that sees lot of action. Anecdotal ofcourse ..
