India to test Advanced Air Defence (AAD) missile from Orissa coast

Report by Karunakar Sahoo, Balasore: India to test indigenously designed and developed Advanced Air Defence (AAD) missile from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) off Orissa coast on Sunday.The target missile, a modified indigenously built 'Prithvi' posing as an enemy missile, lifted off from a mobile launcher from the ITR at Chandipur-on-sea and the interceptor AAD missile using a radio frequency seeker on-board blasted off from Wheeler Island about 70 km across the sea from Chandipur. It was orginally sheduled to test on Sunday Morning 10 am but Interceptor missile test postponed till 2 pm today.

This will be the fourth such test being carried out by scientists of the Defence Research and Development Organisation. At least 3,000 ( 2474 adult and 746 minors of 400 families of 5 villages have been shifted to temporary camps at Khadipahi School, and Kalimandap. They will provide Rs 130/- per Adult members, Rs 65/- to each minors , Rs 25/- each for Fooding and Rs 10/- and Rs 5/- for entertainment . They will also be provided Rs 10/- for each animals. The Defence department has provided Rs 7 lakh to the district administration for the purpose.

Technical snag delays missile shield test

The test-fire of the indigenous Advanced Air Defence (AAD) missile has been postponed. The AAD missile was to be test-fired today (March 14) from Chandipur in Orissa. It is now likely to be test-fired on Monday.

Defence sources say that the AAD missile is capable of destroying any hostile ballistic missile. The missile shield is meant to protect major cities, nuclear power stations, space facilities and military installations.

A target missile will first be lifted off a mobile launcher in Chandipur and the interceptor AAD missile will then be blasted off Wheeler Island about 70 km across away. The seven meter long rocket-propelled missile is expected to be deployed into defence system by 2016.

The 'technical snag' was no snag at all. The launch got deferred because one of the pre-launch operations was delayed during the final countdown. Apparently, there was a delay in the assembling and operation of the one of the sub-systems, that caused an overshoot of the allocated time limit by civil aviation authorities. The exercise will be conducted tomorrow, once fresh clearance's been received.

I've also heard that about 3,000 people have been evacuated from the area as a precaution. Let's see how this pans out.

‘Coordination problem’ grounds India's interceptor missile

Balasore (Orissa): India's new Advanced Air Defence (AAD) interceptor missile, capable of destroying hostile missiles, on Monday encountered a coordination problem and failed to take off during a planned launch from the Integrated Test Range at Wheeler Island off Orissa coast.

"Coordinated exercise between target missile Prithvi from Chandipur and the indigenously built interceptor from Wheeler Island could not take place properly during the planned trial," defence sources said.

The trial, part of efforts to develop a full fledged multi-layer Ballistic Missile Defence System, was earlier scheduled for Sunday but was postponed to today following some 'technical snags' in the sub-system.

The test-fire was carried out from two different launch sites of ITR. The target missile first lifted off from a mobile launcher from the ITR's launch complex at Chandipur-on-sea.

As per plan, the interceptor missile was to blast off from the Wheeler's Island within minutes of the launch of the target to intercept it at an altitude of 15 to 20 km in mid-air over the waters.

But, as per reports, the Prthivi target missile, following its launch at 10.02 am followed the course for 11 kms and then unexpectedly deviated from its trajectory, due to which the interceptor missile's radars did not get activated towards the potential threat and hence the interceptor did not take off in pursuit of the target.

The seven metre AAD interceptor is a single stage solid rocket-propelled guided missile equipped with an inertial navigation system, a hi-tech computer and an electro-mechanical activator totally under command by the data uplinked from the ground based radar.

The missile has its own mobile launcher, secure data link for interception, independent tracking and homing capabilities and its own radar.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) had already test-fired the interceptor missile thrice on November 27, 2006, December 6, 2007 and March 6, 2009 from Wheeler Island.

The problem seems to have been with the Old Prithvi missile.

That was meant to act as the enemy missile.

But, as per reports, the Prthivi target missile, following its launch at 10.02 am followed the course for 11 kms and then unexpectedly deviated from its trajectory, due to which the interceptor missile's radars did not get activated towards the potential threat and hence the interceptor did not take off in pursuit of the target.

its only a deviation /failure from the target PAD prithvi missile!!! when there is no incoming threat ,where is the question of AAD taking off and intercepting the non existant target!!!! They have to investigate why Prithvi failed?

Here's the statement from DRDO about today's abortive AAD test: The flight test under Programme AD was planned to be conducted on 15 Mar 2010 to demonstrate the interception of Tactical Ballistic Missile in endo-atmospheric region. As part of the mission, a target missile mimicking the incoming ballistic missile in terms of altitude and speed, was launched from ITR, Chandipur on 15 Mar 2010 at around 1010 hrs.

The target missile took off in normal way; at T+20 sec (approx) the target deviated due to some onboard system malfunction and could not maintain the intended trajectory, failing to attain the desired altitude profile. The Mission Control Centre computer found that the interception is not warranted as the deviated target did not present the incoming missile threat scenario and accordingly the system intelligently did not allow take-off of the interceptor missile for engaging the target. The cause of the target malfunction is being investigated by analysis of tele-metered data.

Now this is actually Good, I mean this proves the Interceptor systems are in good condition and If the Interceptor took after the Prithvi, it might have gone off course too and landed in a populated place maybe causing damage. So in War time conditions too we be rest assured, this will work in the same condition. Besides, in cases like this, Every missile is a bunch of Cash, so Prithvi failed, we lost a bunch of cash, But Interceptor didnt take off, we saved cash in this test and go onto use it after a coupla days. God Speed

Why are the Prihvi's, the grindstone of our missile program, experiencing "onboard malfunctions" that cause them to "fail to attain the desired altitude profile" ?

Why are we still making excuses for and exonerating the DRDO? When in fact, the end result is that the test was abortive?

It was not a Prithvi Bro. It was a Modified Prithvi These missiles are modified to simulate Hostile Missiles and they dont have fully the characterstics of our System. I am teling this with my limited knowledge, maybe someone can explain better.

Why are we even testing the AAD when we're not even sure the simulated hostile missiles are guaranteed of their trajectory ?

The modified missiles you refer to are a modified variant of the Prithvi-II, which if my sources are correct, was recently tested with an extended range of 350 kilometres and improved Aided Inertial Navigation.

So, why are we still f^cking up our basics, our rudimentary's, our fundamentals regularly?

1. When you ask an organization to come up with a technology as critical as BMD whereas you provide only a few billion $$ for R&D that time you dont exonerate them rather BEG from them.
2. A ballistic missile is not suppose to have any onboard seeker or maneuvering ability. So when you are modifying a ballistic missile to artificially simulate some perticular trajectory with some sort of maneuvering
it poses a completely new challenge . Ballistic science finally boils down to solving a set of differential equations which involves " inverse problems in dynamics ". When such onboard maneuvers are made available
to a ballistic missile which it is not made for the whole scenario changes and it hardly resembles to the original missile. So basics are absolutely alright and absolutely nothing is F***ED UP HERE.The equation of motion
of a ballistic missile is more or less same as a falling stone but when you are trying to suppress or hike up the trajectory the equation of motion completely changes so are the engineering requirements. After modification
PRITHVI -II becomes a missile comparable to shourya but with a reverse feature.

NEW DELHI - India's Prithvi Air Defence System (PAD) failed a test March 15 after a target missile veered off course.

A senior scientist at India's Defence Research and Development Organisaton (DRDO), where PAD was designed and developed, said the failed test does not indicate the system's capability, noting the interceptor never received its cue to launch because the target missile deviated from its course.


The target missile, a short-range Prithvi ballistic missile was fired from a mobile launcher at the Integrated Test Range Complex-3 at India's missile testing site, Chandipur-on-Sea, in the eastern state of Orissa. It deviated from its trajectory after traveling about 11 kilometers and fell into the sea, the DRDO scientist said.

The interceptor, a hypersonic ballistic missile, did not get the required command for takeoff from Wheeler Island, about 70 kilometers from the testing site, an Indian Defence Ministry source said.

The test will be rescheduled soon, the source said.

The PAD system's exo-atomspheric and endo-atmospheric capabilities already have been tested.

The phase-I PAD, which can destroy an incoming ballistic missile at a height of 80 kilometers, is expected to be inducted into operational service in 15 months.

In the second stage, which has been initiated, incoming missiles with a range of more than 2,000 kilometers will be intercepted at a height of more than 120 kilometers.

The missile failed the interceptor was not fired, and like Rage mentioned earlier a modified prithvi means (not a prithvi missile ) or Dhanush; and Dhanush was not mentioned.

Sir with due respect may i have the pleasure to know how did u come to this above mentioned conclusion? Strange...simply wild comments pouring in from different members.Hopefully senior members will look into this and
help others to maintain the sanctity and quality of the posts in this forum.

Why would they modify a Prithvi for an SRBM interceptor test? Its not like it is going to maneuver anywhere. Just fire it and test. The gyroscopes are bad or something. Whatever the problem, there are serious deficiencies in the quality control at India's BM production faclities.
