todays test involves verifying three things

1) Working of proximity fuze radar - The Interceptor missile must blast itself when it comes within certain minimum distance of the target missile.Although this might sound simple,it is very complex in natiure. firstly Target missile will be moving at 3-4 kms per second and interceptor missile at 2-3 kms per second. At those high speed the proxmity fuze radar must react at the point when both missiles are within certain distance. The Reaction time here is 1/100000 of a second.
2) Bigger war head - It looks like war head used in earlier test were not sufficent enough to destroy a huge ballistic missile.hence they have gone for bigger war head for bigger destruction
3) Reduced missile powering time - Time taken for PDV to launch is very crucial and as we are yet to acquire capabilities to identity enemy missile launch in its boost phase(space based detection capabilities),time becames extreamly crucial. hence there is a attempt to reduce the launch time of the interceptor to save those preceious few seconds.

The confusing aspect is the newspaper articles talk of using real target only for the next test. The test happening today will be against simulated electronic targets.what i do not understand is how are they going to check effectivness of bigger war head in todays test?Is it that they are going to check the flight characteristics of the missile using bigger war head?

Interceptor missile test off Odisha coast fails - The Hindu

There appeared to be a problem in one of the sub-systems, which malfunctioned, DRDO scientists told The Hindu.

The trial of an upgraded interceptor missile conducted by DRDO scientists has failed on Monday. According to DRDO sources, the missile called Advanced Air Defence (AAD), plummeted into the Bay of Bengal a few seconds after the liftoff from Wheeler Island, off the Odisha Coast.

There appeared to be a problem in one of the sub-systems, which malfunctioned, DRDO scientists told The Hindu. The exact cause would be known after analysing the data and it might take 24 hours to come to a preliminary conclusion.

The DRDO planned to conduct the Interceptor missile test against an electronic target missile to validate the missile's capability to carry a bigger warhead, improved manoeuverability and reduced mis-distance, among other parameters. India plans to deploy a two-tiered Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system to protect important cities and vital installations from external threats.

The first phase envisages to engage and destroy incoming enemy ballistic missile of 2,000-km range, while the second phase seeks to tackle missiles between 2,000-km and 5,000-km range. With Monday's mission the DRDO has conducted 10 interceptor missile tests and eight out of them have been successful.
Oh well, I guess analyze the problems, fix it and learn from it, try again!

DRDO to conduct another Interceptor missile test soon

SOURCE: Dr Anantha Krishnan M / ONE INDIA

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) faced a setback today after an Advanced Air Defence (AAD) interceptor missile fell into the sea seconds after its launch. The missile was test-fired from DRDO's launch facility in Wheeler Island, off the Odisha Coast.

DRDO officials, who spoke to OneIndia said that they would be back with another launch of the missile by the end of April after studying what went wrong. "These are part and parcel of every missile trails. We had six successive missions of the interceptor missile.

We suspect that one of the sub-systems in the missile might have failed," a top scientist not wanting to be named, said. He said that Monday's test was to assess the performance of the composite motor rocket and the missile's ejection from the canister.

"These two parameters have been successfully tested. There was no target today. But one sub-system misbehaved and we are now analyzing some more data," he added. DRDO says the missile's basic systems are all intact and worked as per the textbook. "Random problems can occur while dealing with complex systems. We will be back by the end of this month for another launch," he added. He said that the missile caught fire after falling apart. This was DRDO's 7th interceptor missile test.

So highlights is,

1) test was conducted on AAD missile and not on PDV missile. There was news that final configuration of AAD was finalized.but since the war head is now increased in size,AAD is more or less a new missile with changed shape with better maneuverability and bigger warhead.
2) Additionally it was tested for composite rocket motor and also launched via canister. So AAD should have higher intercept speed than earlier versions.
3) The Missile seems to have been destroyed(sel destructed) after it started deviating from its path. yet the takeaway here is the successful running of composite motor.

PS: there is news about 2 LRTR radars being stationed already in new delhi which indicates that we can see BMD systems operationalised soon perhaps in next 2 years.
I heard that DRDO is being asked on to quicken work on completion of AAD which will help reduce the operationalization of BMD till PDV development is completed.

Missile defense Countermeasures

A nice video on missile defense countermeasures which can be taken by enemy nation to confuse the ballistic missile defense.

Do note that video shows countermeasures of mid-course only. India has Ballistic missile defense in terminal phase also. And considering the close promximity of pakistan with India, most of missiles fired hardly enters out of Atmosphere to throw the decoys and confuse it.Mind it ,within atmosphere decoys are simply waste. They just do not work.

Lets wait and see. If they have identified the problem and rectified it they will test soon.

The Indian Ballistic Missile Defence Programme is an initiative to develop and deploy a multi-layered ballistic missile defence system to protect from ballistic Launching of Advanced Air Defense (AAD) missile. Building a 10,000 ton ship to launch test missiles is big investment. It signals confidence in the future of India's BMD despite recent delays
It's not a missile launching ship ... It's a Missile instrumentation range ship ...used to monitor and control the missile's launched from somewhere from India.

It's comes with bunch of dish antenna's and Radars
