JLR launches fourth-generation Range Rover at Rs 1.72 crore

Tata group-owned Jaguar Land Rover today launched the fourth-generation Range Rover in India. See pictures

The vehicle, which will be imported as a completely built-up unit, will be available in two variants—a 4.4-litre TD V8 diesel that will cost Rs. 1.72 crore, and a 5-litre V8 supercharged petrol that will cost Rs. 1.8 crore.

The petrol engine produces 503 bhp of power and a maximum torque of 625Nm, while the diesel engine churns out 335 bhp at 700Nm of torque.

For the first time, the Range Rover uses an all-aluminium monocoque frame which reduces weight by 420 kg. It is 27 mm longer than its predecessor, and yet stays overall shorter than rivals like the Audi Q7 or Mercedes-Benz GL.

A monocoque body supports the vehicle's structural load, without just enveloping the structure, thus reducing the load of the internal frame that bears most of the weight.

The Range Rover was first unveiled in London in September, and the market launch happened in Paris later the same month.

The fourth-generation Range Rover is among the last vehicles launched by the Tata group before chairman Ratan Tata steps down in December.

Looks like a timeless beauty, Land Rover got it absolutely right with the new flag-ship. Great off-road capability with decent on road decent on-road dynamics and unmistakable presence are a very rare combination.

But people rarely use it off-road even though it is the most capable luxury mud-plugger out there, it has become more luxurious with each generation and now it is the SUV equivalent of Mercedes S-Class.

Its terrain response system is really state-of-the-art and now they have added auto terrain-response system, that much needed weight reduction of 400kgs will make it much more dynamically capable and also economical.

India facility of Scania goes on stream

Swedish truck and bus manufacturing company Scania expects to roll out its first Indian-made top-end long-distance buses as well as heavy haulage trucks from May next from its plant at Narasapura, 70 km from here.

The plant near Kolar is its first Asian production facility with a capacity to assemble 1,000 buses (in three variants) and 2,500 trucks a year for various industrial purposes.

At the inauguration of the facility on Tuesday, Scania Global President and Chief Executive Officer Martin Lundstedt said, "this is our largest industrial footprint in Asia so far."

India would also emerge as an important export hub for the company's buses, trucks and components, he said.

Scania has invested Rs.250 crore to set up separate truck- and bus-making units on a 40-acre campus in the Narsapura industrial estate, its new country headquarters. The plant employs 198 persons. German automotive major Volkswagen is the largest shareholder in Scania.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inaugurated the facility.

At a news conference later Mr. Lundstedt said, "We are here as long-term partners for the Indian transport sector."

Anders Grundstroemer, Managing Director of the India outfit, Scania Commercial Vehicles India, and Senior Vice-President of the Scania group, said the company so far supplied imported trucks for mining and off-road sectors through its arrangement with L&T.

Bharat Coking Coal had placed an order for 100 truck units. Trials had started for making trucks for the mining and off-road sectors.

The trucks had 18 per cent local content, and it was being raised to 27 per cent.

V. Sivakumar, Director (Sales), said the company pegged its growth on the up-tick in the mining sector, increased focus on environmentall-sustainable practices and the inter-city traveller's increasing preference for luxury travel.

"There is a good interest for buses, and the company's [USP] would be its fuel efficiency," which its customers testified to be 7- 15 per cent higher than the rest, he said.

Bus dealerships would be opened across 50 cities initially in the South and the West. One of its early bus customers for over 100 buses is Surat-based Siddi Vinayak Logistics Ltd. The first batch of buses would be imported first from the company's Malaysian partner and assembled from May 2014 onwards at the local plant.

John Deere launches sugarcane harvester designed for India

US-based farm equipment major John Deere on Thursday launched a sugarcane harvester, which the company says has been specifically designed for the Indian market. The new harvester - CH330 - will be priced around Rs 1.4 crore in the country and John Deere aims to sells upto 20 units in the next year. "There is a huge market for cane harvester in India. Demand for such machines is expected to grow with rising cost of labour. We expect sales to improve in the coming years," John Deer India Managing Director and CEO Satish Nadiger said. This is the second global company after New Holland to launch cane harvesters in India - the second biggest sugarcane producer in the world. Sugarcane in the country has grown in nearly five million hectares, but not even one per cent of the produce is harvested by these machines at present. The new harvester, with lower 198 horsepower and that can cut 150 tonne cane per hectare, has been designed specially for India's small sugarcane fields having narrow row spacing and heavy crop yields, he added. Mr. Nadiger said the company targets to sell 20 units in the first year mainly to sugar mills and entrepreneurs, who later can give it for custom hiring. It would focus its sales in sugarcane growing states of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

I cant believe that the Scania plant in Narasapura can produce 1000 busses a year with just 200 workers.
It must be really heavily automated if this is true.

That is not a lot of jobs for such a big undertaking.

Good to see these american companies are opening their shops in india, but the fact of the matter remains the same. Do we have roads that justify the use of these expensive machines. clearly if one had such a bike he/she would think twice to bring it on our roads..
