I found some definitions and descriptions in this article to be interesting.

Howitzer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A howitzer is a type of artillery piece characterized by a relatively short barrel and the use of comparatively small propellant charges to propel projectiles at relatively high trajectories, with a steep angle of descent. Until fairly recently, about the end of the Second World War, such weapons were characterized by a barrel length 15 to 25 times the caliber of the gun.

In the taxonomies of artillery pieces used by European (and European-style) armies in the eighteenth, 19th, and 20th centuries, the howitzer stood between the "gun" (characterized by a longer barrel, larger propelling charges, smaller shells, higher velocities, and flatter trajectories) and the "mortar" (which was meant to fire at even higher angles of ascent and descent). Howitzers, like other artillery pieces, are usually organized in groups called batteries.

I guess accuracy would be compromised, anyways how accurate are the howitzers ?
Accuracy of arty guns/ howitzers depends on some the following factors:-
- Quality of ammunition.
- Computerized range tables.
- Wind.
- Difference in the height of the gun location and the target.
- Air temperature
- Air density.
- Variation in temperature of the barrel from round to round.

Most medium arty shells have a kill zone of 50 mtrs and a danger area of about 100 mtrs. Now imagine one battery of 6 guns firing on your position. When the enemy is attacking, there will be multiple fire units raining hell on you.

Imagine the hell on a target area that has a whole regiment firing on it.

In Kargil, the tied turned when we started unit arty, enmass. In some battles I believe 100 + guns were firing on objectives under assault.

Adding to this:

Size of this shrapnel in 1000 were flying around 100 of meters, Cutting, slicing any thing in the way at high speed..

kunal sir with those guided shells and extended range shells, even the weapons locating radar cannot calculate the flight trajectory of shell to locate the artillery gun.

A regiment on 18 grads can deliver 720 120 mm rockets on the target area in 20 seconds.

But this system cannot be used for fire support, as it is not very accurate. The beaten zone is about 3 or 3.5 km.

One uses such an MBRL system when you have to saturate a large area. Example - a brigade defended area.

The howitzers and field guns are used to soften specific targets.

Sir,
Just thinking it can be also used against shoot and scoot arty systems, BM-21 as counter arty with help of WLRs ?

mlrs with modern guidance system(like the one installed on pinaka batteries called sagem) can achieve accuracy of an artillery system.also it can bring a huge volume of firepower to a target area within seconds and gives the enemy very very little time to react unlike artillery shells which can be fires at the most 3 per minute from a gun.that is why the indian army is so confident of executing cold start doctrine(even though it has been unable to induct new artilley system for last 25) since the backbone of our corps of artilery is strengthened by the induction of smerch and pinaka mbrl systems.anyways the deadly effect of mlrs systems is witnessed by german soldiers of ww2 when they had to face off against soviet katyusha barrages.

1. Tube guns use and deployments are different from MBRLS.

2. Tube arty is use extensively to destroy enemy emplacement in presence of ground friendly forces around who act as forward observers, unlike MBRLS.

3. MBRLS have more firepower than a tube arty system, Hence they are used against enemy mass strategic holds in absence of friendly ground forces around.

4. MBRLS take 30min for reloading where as Arty takes 30sec or less.

5. Both are arty system but used in different ways as they are made for specific task.

Sagem increase the range by modifying tragectory of a Rocket yet keeping same accuracy of the rocket.

^^^^ The difference between wheeled and mounted systems are that wheeled systems contain their crew inside the compartment and are ready to fire without any further preparation similar to the tracked SPG. Whereas a mounted system has to be dismounted before firing and the firing crew travels along with driver in his chamber.

Go through the RFI once again. IA wants 800 mounted gun systems and 180 wheeled systems.

@Blueblood,

Mounted gun system in Indian army means any arty mounted on any platform call mounted arty/gun system..

IA wants 800 mounted gun systems and 180 wheeled systems.
India is in the process of procuring four types of artillery guns. The Indian Army's artillery needs

1,580 155mm 52calibre towed guns,
180 155mm 52calibre wheeled
145 155mm 39calibre ultralight howitzers
100 155mm 52calibre tracked guns.
