Arjun Mark-2 tank set to see light of day

Design of Tejas’ next version almost done, indicates DRDO Chairman

In an important move, the ‘Made in India’ Arjun Mark-2 tank project is set to see the light of the day.

Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) Dr S Christopher in an interview to The Tribune said, “We have had a meeting with the Vice-Chief of the Indian Army where it was agreed on accepting Mark-2. Modalities are being worked out”. Once done, the acceptance of necessity (AON) for 118 will be revived, he added.

The AON is decided by the Defence Acquisition Council headed by the Defence Minister. A total of 93 modifications have been done on the first version of Arjun — 124 were inducted — in 2010-2011.

On being asked if the Army was okay with the weight of the tank, the DRDO boss said: “The weight (the tank is almost 58 tonnes) has been accepted; that is a major change”. Most modern European tanks are of the same weight, and tank-transporters (specialised trucks) for Arjun are available.

The DRDO has promised to set up a system to maintain the Arjun Mark-2 within India. It will be an annual maintenance contract with the Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) as a possible agency, Dr Christopher said. On the trials, he said, “These have done 4,000 kms of run, the upgrades will be tested.”

On artillery guns, Dr Christopher said the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems (ATAGS), of which the Army has agreed to accept 40 pieces to start with, will get a more powerful engine to enable rapid movement. The guns designed by DRDO have been made by two private companies under the transfer of technology.

The DRDO is keen to get a slice of the 1,580 towed guns the Army is looking to buy. “Both companies (Tata Power SED and Bharat Forge) are gearing up produce more. We need an order for 200-300 guns to tie up logistics,” he said.

Talking about the next version of the Tejas, called ‘Mark1-A’, Dr Christopher said: “The design other than the AESA radar and the jammer pod is complete.”

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is looking to import the AESA radar even as DRDO made a radar that will be tested next month. The IAF is looking at 83 ‘Mark1-A’, with 59 improvements over the existing Tejas.

The Indian Air Force has projected a need for 324 fighter jets over 15 years and has officially indicated that it needs the ‘Tejas Mark 2’ (medium combat aircraft). It will carry a more powerful engine and weigh almost 20 per cent heavier than Tejas.

Even the current ATAGS prototypes (i.e G1 & G2) cleared all mobility parameters in the hills. This 'weight issue' is nothing but a canard being used by certain people in an attempt to derail a highly successful program that has the potential to uplift Indian pvt industry.

I read that Tatra 6x6 FAT has 12 tonne towing capacity and L&The FAT has 8 tonne towing capacity. So what are they using currently to toe this massive 20 tonne machine.
Tatras can haul tanks on trailers. But that's probably 10x10 or more if I am correct

The ATAGS has a weight of 17-18 tons compared to its contemporaries in other armies weighing 14-15 tons. However, this increase in weight is not a disadvantage when the gun once deployed need not shift position post firing because of its extended range.

Get The First Look Of India’s K9 VAJRA Guns At Defexpo 2018 In Chennai

Team DefenceAviationPost

The first lot of the of the 100 K9 VAJRA-Ttracked, self-propelled artillery guns for the the Indian Army are ready and will be displayed at the India Pavilion of DefExpo 2018.

A live fire demonstration of this howitzer—Customised and co-developed by L&T and South Korean technology major HTW has also been planned at the exciting Chennai.

The K9 Vajra T gun is an enhanced version of HTW’s K9 Thunder.

L&T had in May 2017 bagged the order to supply 100 units of this 155mm/52 calibre Tracked Self-Propelled Gun systems to suit the specific requirements of the Indian Army including desert operations.

The K9 VAJRA-T 155mm/ 52 Cal. Tracked Self-Propelled Howitzer meets the requirements of 21st century warfare.

Features: Deep fire support with its longer firing range; qualitative superiority to overcome a numerical inferiority with its higher rate of fire and accuracy and effective and reliable fire support in all kinds of circumstances with its higher mobility and protection.

Being produced at L&Ts production line at Hazara in Gujarat, the K9 VAJRA-T is a variant of K9 Thunder which is inarguably the world’s best 155mm/52 Cal.SPH in terms of number of systems in active service.

Currently, K9 Thunder — that has established its superiority through demonstrations and evaluation tests at various proving grounds in extreme weather conditions, jungles, barren deserts and severely cold areas — is serving as one of the main conventional deterrent forces for a number of armies including the Korean Army.

By demonstrating its ability to handle Indian as well as all NATO standard ammunitions, K9 VAJRA-T has proven its excellent conformability to any field artillery unit.

Woah!!! So they are ready to induct at least one battery it seems. Guns are almost ready. So tracked and towed arty(Dhanush) regular induction might cheer up the situation for IA.

Probably the first DefExpo with arty rounds firing live.

Apart from the stated low response of exhibitors and location , it might end up as one of its kind DefExpo with actual Air , land and Sea hardware at one place with Ships @ sea and live arty demo.

Dhanush mounted on truck
The weight of the gun seems to be weirdly pivoted "behind" the truck!!! Doesn't seem like an efficient way to move!!
I deduce this is for "display' purposes only. This cannot be a prototype!
