Yes, it's basically competing against itself. Army seems to like it enough. Initial requirement is 80+.

What role does Kestrel aspire for in the Indian Army?

It cannot replace BMP-2 and neither can it replace MPVs for CI ops.

Kestrel will act as APC and BMP2 will be replaced by FICV.
u cannot use both and APC and FICV in CT operations. MPV's does that work. also its not Army job that should ideally be CRPF or Police job for CT operations.

For our own wheeled light tank ..
Agree..
I believe we should have automatic turret and not BMP2 30mm on Kestral.
say every 100 Kestral deployed in APC mode should have automatic 30mm turret and 10 in anti tank mode with 105mm/120mm gun, 10 with twin Mortar, 10 in airdefence (1 30mm gun and 4 side mounted QRSAM), 5 medivac, 5 C&C

What you proposing is somewhat similar to stryker formation, Unfortunately their is none such formation exist in Indian Army ..

This idea is however talked in past Aug 13, 2011 in depth detail : http://defenceforumindia.com/forum/threads/should-indian-army-have-its-own-stryker-concept.24385/

If you are interested in such idea, Best read the thread as some of the points are highlighted by Ex - Brigadier Ray of Indian Army ( When he was active at DFI ), With other esteem members as well ..

Date if induction?
Did IA mentioned it?

Sent from my ASUS_Z00LD using Tapatalk

Initially, the IA's FICV program had it that the agencies develop a tracked and wheeled platform. Now the FICV is only tracked, IA still wants a, "Wheeled Amphibious Platform" (WhAP). TATA is the only trialing, basically, they're competing by themselves. DRDO and TATA expect 80+ initial order.

It has done amphibious and firing trials, it'll need to do whatever modifications if any mentioned by the army, etc.

NOT HAPPY WITH INDIA BEING LABELED ONE OF THE LARGEST IMPORTERS OF DEFENSE EQUIPMENT IN WORLD: ARUN JAITLEY
SATURDAY, MARCH 18, 2017 BYINDIANDEFENSE NEWS

BEL CEO detailing the Remote Controlled Weapons Station to Maj Gen GD Bakshi at Aero India
Union minister Arun Jaitley, who was appointed the Defence minister just days ago after Manohar Parrikar stepped down to become the chief minister of Goa, met Russia’s Minister of Trade and Industry Denis Manturov at Manekshaw Centre on Friday. Manturov is on a two-day visit to India to focus on issues related to the $1-billion Indo-Russian deals including Kamov-226 helicopters, the progress of Project 1135-6 frigates for the Indian Navy and T-90 tanks for the Indian Army, among others. Soon after the meeting, Arun Jaitley said, “India is one of the largest importers of defense equipment in the world, and this definitely is not a label we are happy with.” Addressing a conference on India-Russia Military and Industrial cooperation, Jaitley called for deeper bilateral engagement in defense production. He said that Russia should at least facilitate manufacturing of parts and subsystems, which are needed in large numbers and where the requirement is recurring in nature.
According to FE Bureau, “Besides meeting with the new defense minister Arun Jaitley, three sets of meetings have been planned for the visiting minister. He will meet officials of Indian Army, Navy and the Air Force. The interaction between the Russian side and the Indian armed forces, as well as the industry, is to see how all can work together as a support system.”
On the day, two agreements were signed at the conference between India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation and United Engine Corporation for the long-term supply of spares and technical assistance for Sukhoi Su-30MKI aircraft for five years.
Saying that these moves are part of the larger defense and economic agenda chalked out by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for India, FM Jaitley said, “PM, after forming the government, launched the Make in India initiative; defense production is identified as one of the key areas under this.”
Earlier today, Defence Minister Jaitley while intervening in the Lok Sabha during a debate had said that the Indian armed forces were fully prepared to meet any challenge and asked the Opposition to be very careful about conveying the impression that they were not due to lack of procurement.

NEW DELHI The Indian Army will upgrade more than 600 Russian-built T-90 tanks by adding new features and replacing their thermal imaging sights, navigation systems and fire control systems at a cost of more than $250 million.which will be developed by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The tanks' existing armor protection systems, navigation gear, thermal imaging sights and fire control systems will be replaced.

DRDO had earlier attempted to mount air conditioning systems on the tanks, but were stopped by Russia, citing intellectual property rights," said Arun Sehgal, a retired Army brigadier general and defense analyst.

The Russians were then asked to fit the air conditioning systems in the T-90 tanks, but the attempt was unsuccessful," Sehgal said. The intellectual property rights issue has since been resolved between India and Russia
.

Another Army official said,The thermal imaging system of the T-90 tanks were faulty from the initial stage

Rahul Bhonsle, another retired Indian Army brigadier general and defense analyst, said, A major part of the proposed upgrade will include providing an enhanced fire control potential because in the comparative trials between the Arjun and T-90 tanks last year, the Arjun had demonstrated a superior sighting system than the Russian tank.

The indigenous production of about 1,000 additional T-90s has been contracted, but production has not yet begun.

"The Russians have not provided full-scale [intellectual property rights] and are withholding some critical designs; thus, full-scale indigenization has been held up in Avadi, Bhonsle said.

An official of the Ordnance Factory Board, which administers the Avadi factory, said the Russians have supplied only 40 percent of the technology and nearly none since 2008. â–

My thoughts exactly. There is presently no formation based on wheeled APC.

There are only few, i would say "specialist" units who could use a Kestrel. I can only think of recce units which are equipped with BRDM. I see BMP-2 fulfilling every other role including the occasional COIN use.

Are wheeled IFVs better at high altitude terrain? Maybe we can use kestrel in Ladakh. IDK.

...Unfortunately their is none such formation exist in Indian Army ..

....

just a few thoughts..

wheeled APC will be useful in urban environment. BMP may not be able to travel long distances(if need arises) on roads, wheeled APC can.

i am basing my opinion on an encounter in arnia at the beginning of 2015, BMP had been brought on back of a truck to the encounter site. i am assuming wheeled APC can travel the whole distance on it's own.

Army felt requirement for fast mobility though well paved roads during its blitzkrieg march 1971..

Also, Few years back Army made a requirement for such vehicles for using at Africa under UN ..
