^ (Buddy to buddy refueling)

"In-flight refueling from one
suitably modified combat aircraft to another combat aircraft. The quantity of fuel transferred is comparatively very small. A specialized pod is used by the "mother" aircraft for this purpose."

"A half-century of MiG-21FL service came to a close on 11 December at Kalaikunda. Whilst nothing like the beautiful sendoff the Phantoms got at Wittmund, the ceremony was as good a send off as could be asked for as the Type-77s of the OCU (Operational Conversion Unit) flew for the last time." - (Angad Singh)

i thought only tankers were used for mid air refuels........
Buddy-buddy refuelling allows fighters to refuel one another. It is particularly useful for navies and carrier ops, here a fighter is often configured as a fighter i.e. instead of carrying any ordinance they will carry external tanks and then will be used to refuel other fighters:

(the above is a Mig-29K refuelling a Mig-35).

For the IN this is especially useful as one of the downfalls of STOBAR is that, as a fighter as to take off under its own power on a short deck, weight is a limiting factor and thus you are confronted between fuelling up for missions with plenty of fuel but barely any ordinance or vice versa. The buddy-buddy refuelling system overcomes this issue greatly as fighters (MiG-29K/KUBs) can take off with minimal fuel but heavy weapon loads and then be topped off once in the air by a MiG-29K/KUB acting as a tanker and then be on their way with both heavy fuel and weapons.

It is also useful for strike missions as you don't need a heavy lumbering AAR for IFR but another fighter as such each MKI SQD in the IAF has 1-2 of these buddy-buddy refuelling pods.
