Makes no logical sense. Corruption goes both ways.. How do you expect to maintain religious sanctity while being economically and politically corrupt? Classical example is Roman catholic church in black plague. That time had massive economic losses, largely due to religious corruption of the church.. mind you Europe was also an agglomeration of theocratic states at that time.
