India Shows How Afghanistan, Iran & China Too Suffer From Pakistan-Fuelled Terror

NEW DELHI: India is building a case that it is not the sole victim of terror as Afghanistan, Iran and China are also being targeted by state-backed terror groups based in Pakistan.

While most terror strikes in Afghanistan have been traced back to Pakistan, Iran has been at the receiving end of terror by ISI-backed Sunni groups which have links with LeT & Jaish. Uyghur extremist groups are receiving active support from across the border in Pakistan and this should bother China, well-informed sources indicated to ET. The promotion of cross-border terror is a wellthought strategy by Pakistan to maintain its importance in the region but is getting exposed, claimed one of the sources.

The rise of terror strikes in Afghanistan over the past few years bears stamp of Pakistan security establishment and is a part of Pakistan’s strategy to influence politics in the neighbouring country using terror as an instrument of policy. It is in this backdrop that the Afghan government recently went to the United Nations Security Council to lodge protest against Pakistan’s interference in its internal matters, explained one of the sources.

Iran’s province of Sistan Baluchistan has been at the receiving end of terror from Paksiatn-based Sunni extremist groups and there has been a spike in terror strikes in this province, including Chabahar. The Sunni group, Jaish al-Adl (Army of Justice), which has links with LeT and Pak establishment, claimed responsibility for the terror attack that was orchestrated a day ahead of Pulwama attack. Jaish Al-Adl, also maintains links with JeM, claimed one of the sources quoted above. Iran-Pakistan relations have touched a low following the February 13 attack which was aimed at elite forces.

Interestingly, the restive border region between Iran and Pakistan has been used in the past by Pakistan Army and ISI to smuggle Indian origin recruits from Gulf to terror camps in Pakistan in the past.

Faheem Ansari who played a role in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks was brought to Pakistan from the Gulf through this route and trained by Lashkar-e-Taibba before being sent to Mumbai.

The cross-border terror from Pakistan has spread its network in China’s restive Xinjiang notwithstanding all-weather friendship between Beijing and Islamabad.Almost a decade back China demanded from Pakistan the return of a top terrorist of the Islamist Uyghur East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM). This terror operative was involved in one of the bombings in Xinjiang. Number of EITM leaders have confessed to have been trained and indoctrinated by terror groups in Pakistan. East Turkestan Islamic Movement co-founder Memetuhut Memetrozi was indoctrinated in a madarasa in Pakistan .
