Russia is not the USSR. They need money, and they'd rather India purchase the T-90 than the Arjun. You know my position on that issue. :)

I don't agree with much of what the guy is saying.
India bought T-90 in panic after Pakistan's T-80UD purchase. Before that IA Generals were quite happy with T-72.
We should not blame India's poor planning and execution on Russia.

The Generals oppose local weapons as it affects their pockets. This is nothing to do with Russia. Russians actually pay out very little compared to Europeans. For Russians, it is more a matter of sustaining their industrial base.

I think it is important for India to sustain Russia's industrial base. There are many reasons. First and foremost is India needs Russian hydrocarbons and other raw materials. Second is Russia has a natural affinity with India which is missing with Europeans. Third is Russia is a natural market for India's agricultural and industrial goods.

Yes, our Generals are, well, disappointing. No wonder they had the absurd expectation of an MBT, with a crew of 4, for 40 tons.

I agree. Now that Russia is looking east, India needs to strengthen BRICS, its common currency (actually the SDR), and improve trade with Russia. I would want to say goodbye to the Saudi Oil, and focus purely on Iran and Russia.

Well there is a difference between sharing your opinion and dictating, Russia or USSR before that never dictated their terms to India, but US did that many times. One of the reason we had to take side of USSR though being neutral was because of US habit of dictating other's foreign policy.

and it's not Russia it's a freaking new channel.

India should not downgrade its relationship with Russia. Only fools discard a reliable, time tested old friends. India should be friendly to US, Europe, Israel..but need to wait to get the proof that they have India's interest in their heart and not trying to manipulate India just for more profits.
US needs to prove that it truly has stopped nurturing and feeding Paki snake. New friends need to show the sincerity. Russia does not need to prove anything as it has already proven trustworthy in last several decades. The bond of trust should be maintained.

I feel FGFA contract may be signed. This is a big commitment from India side, probably 5.5B USD.
Russia needs PAK-FA in view of deteriorating security environment in its region, so this project is likely to get focus whatever the situation.
India will get several new joint ventures as Russia has realized it needs component production outside Russia to support its own needs in case of disruption. It may offer more production in India in case of Su-30, Mig-29 etc. It will like to take advantage of GOI relaxing foreign stake in JV.
I feel helicopter JV offer may also there including building components for Mil series in use in India.
We should see an engine JV for Russian engines definitely.
Russia will latch on to Modi's "make in India" though primary reason may be to diversify its sources in case of war.

RUSSIA - INDIA: STEPS INTO THE FUTURE

India highly values the friendly relations with Russia and is interested in further growth and participation of the Russian Federation in the program "Make in India". These are the aspects and problems of the Indo-Russian ties that Nirmala Sitharaman, State Minister of Commerce and Industry of India focused on, while speaking to Russian journalists, who have arrived in India, prior to the visit of President Vladimir Putin to New Delhi. It is scheduled for the 11th of December.

We have high expectations from the upcoming visit of the Russian president - mentioned the Minister of State. Nirmala Sitharaman elaborated on the current state of the Indo-Russian trade and economic relations.

Bilateral trade has increased slightly between the years 2010-12, but in 2013, it significantly decreased by 13%. Potential for its development is huge - said the Minister of State. - There should be greater engagement between the two countries to understand what compatibilities we have and to identify markets. I from India want greater market penetration for my products whether it's manufactured goods or agricultural products. We expect to have greater market access to Russia. I also invite a lot of investment from Russia for those goods for which India has been giving a market for over the years. I think that from cost market consideration it will be much better for Russia to come here and produce it and sell it to us rather than produce it wherever and then export them.

Nirmala Sitharaman describes of the fairly wide range for future cooperation between India and Russia and highlights some of its aspects.

"Systema" has shown interest in investing in "smart cities" in India. Russia is also interested in India participation in industrial parks. Then investment opportunities in Delhi-Mumbai industrial corridor. Russian investors are looking forward to it. We've got great relations between India and Russia in defense production. Now we've opened up a lot of defense related parts from the point of view of foreign direct investment. 49% of investment is possible. And then aviation area is also possible, as well as mining, steel, auto sector and pharmaceuticals.

The State Minister is confident that the Western sanctions against Russia provide India with additional opportunities.

India has not welcomed the imposing of sanctions - said the Minister of State. Our long-term cooperation with Russia will grow in spite of these sanctions.

Amongst the important areas in the development of trade and economic relations with Russia, the Minister highlighted the establishment of an inter-banking cooperation. It is also necessary to reduce the time of delivery of goods. Presently, it takes 50 days for goods from India to reach the port of St. Petersburg by sea. Via the transport corridor "North-South", which will pass from India through Iran to Russia, it will take 20 days. The Indian side is interested in the establishment of transportation and logistic support throughout this potential route.

The full range of bilateral ties between India and Russia will be discussed during the forthcoming visit of President Vladimir Putin to New Delhi.

India and Russia signed Inter- Governmental Agreement for developing Multi Role Fighter Aircraft

India and Russia signed an Inter- Governmental Agreement for designing, developing and producing the Multi Role Fighter Aircraft. The announcement was made by Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on 5 December 2014 during the parliamentary session. Moreover, Indian Fighter aircraft MIG 21 is being phased out and aircrafts MIG 29 are being procured from Russia. With the fifth generation stealth technology, the aircraft strikes would be high as they cannot be immediately detected by radar. However, no deal has been struck with Russia for procurement of Fighter Aircraft equipped with stealth technology. Till date, no agreement has been signed with any country for the procurement or purchase of fighter aircrafts. Apart from these Multi Role Fighter Aircrafts, around 20-30 indigenously-built Light Combat Aircraft Tejas will also be commissioned soon by India.

Russian trade with India will increase, with Russia sourcing more food items and consumer durables from India. Russia will also buy more vehicles and automobile components from India.
Russia may give more access to Indian engineering companies.
Indian petrochemical sector may get invitation to set up plants in Russia.

I also see greater collaboration between Russian and Indian universities under some new exchange program.

International IT giant from India looks towards Russia
INFOSYS, the IT giant in India and her pride, which develops software for leading IT companies in the world, is looking towards Russia.

This was revealed in an exclusive interview to Natalia Benyukh, Correspondent of Radio "Sputnik," by Richard Lobo, Vice President of INFOSYS at the Company's Headquarters in Bangalore on the eve of the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India. Richard Lobo intends to travel to Russia for business negotiations. We can start with the Russian regions, and we are thinking about realising this step now, says Richard Lobo.

The INFOSYS Vice President spoke about the attitude of Indians towards Russia, and described his own perception of Russian culture:

"Indians consider Russia as a close friend. Our collaboration began in 1960s- 1970s, says Richard Lobo. Personally, I discovered the works of Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoyevsky at school. "Crime and Punishment" is my favorite work of Dostoyevsky. I derived a lot of satisfaction from stories by Anton Chekhov. I read with interest the Soviet journals published in India. I think it is worth appreciating that your Government provided the Indians an opportunity to learn more about your country, to know its culture. I particularly remember photographs from Tolstoy's estate "Yasnaya Polyana", and acquaintance with his views. I think the Indians and Russians have similar mentality. And this creates a good basis for mutual understanding and for developing cooperation at this stage."

In INFOSYS, where tens of thousands of talented computer scientists from nearly 40 countries work on the creation of software for e-commerce and telecommunications, there are Russian specialists also. There are not many of them at present, says Richard Lobo, but I'm sure that their number will grow as we move into the Russian market:

"Both countries are developing steadily, said Richard Lobo, "India, Russia and China are uniting their efforts in the framework of BRICS. This is a good platform for further cooperation." We are not a government company, continues Lobo.

"We are a publicly stated company. But the government support for business is critical. We welcome the intention of the new Government of India to strengthen ties with Russia. The forthcoming visit of President Vladimir Putin to India is aimed at the continuation of Indo-Russian dialogue. We are excited about this. I am confident that the visit will open new opportunities for Indo-Russian cooperation."

"When I visit Russia", he said, "I will surely fulfill a dream from my youth and visit the famous estate of Leo Tolstoy at "Yasnaya Polyana", which is not far from Moscow

Why?

They should get their a$$ kicked. Bcz they are not good enough for their job.

But the money is going in Russian pocket so you are happy, even after if it cost to your own country and the tax payers. Isn't it!
