3 slain Khalistani leaders, including Bhindranwale in Kartarpur corridor video released by Pak

A video song released by the Pakistan government welcoming Sikh pilgrims to visit Kartarpur Sahib has created a controversy as it has pictures of three Khalistani separatist leaders, including Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale in the background in one part of the clip.

The video, released by Pakistan's Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Monday, has posters of Bhindranwale, Major General Shabeg Singh and Amrik Singh Khalsa, all of whom were killed during Indian Army's Operation Blue Star at the Golden Temple in Amritsar in June 1984.

Bhindranwale was the head of Sikh religious sect Damdami Taksal. Singh was an Indian Army general, who joined the Khalistani movement in 1984 after he was stripped of his rank and court-martialled on charges of corruption just before his retirement. Khalsa was a Khalistani student leader who headed the now-banned All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSD).

Earlier, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh had raised concerns that Pakistan could use misuse the corridor to revive Sikh militancy in Punjab. Several Indian intelligence agencies and experts have also questioned Pakistan's intentions of opening the route.

A fringe Khalistani group based in the US called 'Sikhs for Justice' is attempting to promote the so-called 'Referendum 2020' movement by using the corridor with tacit support from Pakistan's spy agency ISI.

The video has surfaced just days before the Kartarpur Corridor is slated to be inaugurated. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the corridor on the Indian side on November 8, his Pakistani counterpart Imran Khan will open the route on the other side the following day.

India and Pakistan had, on October 24, signed an agreement on the modalities for operationalising Kartarpur Sahib Corridor, paving the way for its inauguration ahead of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev.

The corridor will facilitate visa-free movement of Indian pilgrims, who will have to just obtain a permit to visit Kartarpur Sahib.

The route will connect Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Punjab's Gurdaspur district with Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara in Pakistan.

After Pakistan released its official Kartarpur song featuring pictures of pro-Khalistan leaders, government sources report that the Centre on Wednesday has hit out at Pakistan for promoting Khalistani content. Sources report that the government has raised objections with Pakistan over the video, alleging that the Kartarpur platform has been used for promoting anti-India content. This development comes ahead of the Kartarpur Corridor opening ceremony on November 9.

The video which shows pilgrims heading to Pakistan to visit the Nankana Sahib Gurudwara also features the posters of the afore-mentioned leaders pinned to the side of a building. Pakistan has also released two other videos featuring clips of devotees, with the 'Khalistan 2020' poster in the background.

Who were the Khalistani leaders'
The three pro-Khalistani leaders were killed in 1984 as a part of Operation Blue Star. Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale headed a religious organisation called Damdami Taksal and Amrik Singh Khalsa headed the now-banned student body -All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSD). Meanwhile, Shabeg Singh who was reportedly one of Bhindranwale's key adviser and a dismissed army officer.

Pakistan's pro-Khalistan support
Pakistan's support to the pro-Khalistan movement has been a constant bone of contention between India and Pakistan. Earlier in March, India had categorically expressed its displeasure over the appointment of pro-Khalistan leader Gopal Singh Chawla in the Pakistan Sikh Gurudwara Committee. Chawal is also known to be the right-hand man of 26/11 mastermind and UN-designated terrorist Hafiz Saeed. Succumbing to pressure in July, Pakistan ahead of the India-Pakistan meeting over the Kartarpur corridor removed Chawla from the committee.

Kartapur Corridor agreement signed
Meanwhile, on October 24, India and Pakistan signed a landmark agreement to operationalise the historic Kartarpur Corridor to allow Indian Sikh pilgrims to visit the holy Darbar Sahib in Pakistan. Both the countries have also decided that the corridor will be operational throughout the year and seven days a week and that pilgrims will have a choice to visit it as individuals or in groups. Pakistan has finally waived the $ 20 service fee per pilgrim on Friday, after facing severe criticism for not doing so. But, Pakistan is yet to approve the complete list of the pilgrims to visit Kartarpur on November 9.

Chemical attack at kindergarten in China injures 51 children

(CNN) — Fifty-one children and three teachers were injured at a kindergarten in southwest China when a man attacked them with a corrosive chemical, state media reported Tuesday.

According to state-run news agency Xinhua, a 23-year-old suspect surnamed Kong climbed into the school in Kaiyuan city, Yunnan province, on Monday afternoon and sprayed caustic soda on a room full of students and teachers.

Two of those hit were seriously hurt, although their injuries are not life-threatening, the report said.
The suspect was detained about an hour after the attack. He allegedly sprayed the chemical as an act of revenge on society, Xinhua quoted police as saying.

Caustic soda -- also known as sodium hydroxide -- is used in the manufacturing of a number of common products, including soap, paper, and various dyes.
According to the United States' Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, exposure to caustic soda can irritate or burn the eyes and skin, provoke an allergic reaction, or even cause temporary hair loss.

History of violence
Monday's incident is not the first school attack to take place in China. In October 2018, a woman wielding a kitchen knife slashed at least 14 children at a kindergarten in the central city of Chongqing.

Nine students were killed at a middle school in Shaanxi province in April 2018 by a 28-year-old man who was later sentenced to death.
In 2017, 11 students were injured after a man climbed over the wall of a kindergarten with a knife and began attacking them

The Punjab assembly on December 14 had unanimously passed a resolution, seeking an India-Pak land swap deal on Kartarpur. However, Pakistan has turned down the demand from the Indian side for a land swap between the two countries to make Kartarpur a part of India.

Sikhs really got a raw deal here when the Radcliffe line was drawn...But, it's good that Punjab assembly has passed a resolution for land swap, so that there is a record. After the next war with Pakistan, Sikhs should ensure that the land swap happens. Also, militancy risk of kartarpur corridor is overblown. Also, many sikhs will not like the idea of Paki beggars making money from Sikh pilgrims indefinitely..
