I am really surprised at the neglect Ladakh has received from Security hawks of this country specially when China has been constantly signalling their interest in Ladakg since past ten years. There have been increased number of border intrusions and those has been successively increasing every year in Ladakh. The Indian Army reacted by making 3 Infantry Division fully responsible for Ladakh in place of earlier one brigade only as also by inducting one armored brigade but their threat assessment for No War No Peace as also Low intensity War has proved to be wrong..
Whereas Indian Army has gained a strategic balance in the East by raising two mountain divisions, Ladakh in my humble assessment remained neglected. One Infantry Division is not sufficient to look after about 450 km of LAC. Strategic reserves of Northern Command are located far away. MSC is so mired in internal politics and it is on crutches... Three behemoths in the form of India;s strikes corps have been blessed to remain LOB. Among them they hold six infantry divisions as hostage.

There is an urgent need for the National intelligence agencies to promulgate a realistic threat assessment and CDS must then carry out forces restructuring accordingly... The Ghost of three strike Corps needs to be exorcised by freeing their Armour formation to the three comds / pivot corps thereby making the three strike corps dual tasked.. as MSC is also dual tasked..India's interior lines of communication does permit that...

I also feel same way. We need Chinese soldiers at LAC. It will do a lot of good to India. Only a clear and present danger can change this country.

I feel that a few things are necessary - one of them is just disband OFB. These Calcutta communists are good for nothing. They will sink this country.

Move all ammunition production to private sector.
Divide equipment production 50-50 between DPSU and private for now.

Naturally that was their original plan . They invited China to discredit Modi and thereby bring in a regime change. My concern is that the nationalist forces including the BJP should have well anticipated it after big intrusions of 2013. 2014 and Doklam and the way the left Libarts with political Islamist were behaving. They should have known that those intrusion were not mere boundary issues but China was trying to directly influence Indian political course..

Then why were they not prepared. Why was Indian Security structure in slumber. If the political class has declared their intentions with respect to POK and GB. why did the CDS and COAS as also Air Chief not dual task Indian offensive formations for mountains... why did they have to scrounge for troops for Ladakh.. ??

You do not understand politics. BJP's first task is to sustain its rule. Military capacity is secondary. If BJP is unable to consolidate political power then all the military capacity counts for nothing.

Now is the time for Modi to focus on military. The focus on border roads and rail is correct. If you cannot move equipment and soldiers then all your best weapons are useless anyway. Second is to buy equipment that is effective given the conditions on the ground. The equipment part is happening but changes in a rigid setup of India's defence cannot come overnight. The people who criticize forget that revolutionary changes in peacetime in a democracy are almost impossible. Changes will be step by step. We have first major vendor L&T in private sector building SPG and large coast guard boats. L&T can now be promoted to build frigates and air defence guns. So these things will happen step by step.

Seen from macro perspective, The MoD has not been handled properly the way Modi wanted it. Modi appears to be fully in bureaucratic clutches. No political leader can do any good in this country unless he frees himself from the clutches of IAS and IPS bureaucracy. Modi could have done it as he has no personal empire to build.

MoD is a big behemoths where all sorts of crooks of the country seems to have gathered - the IAS, Generals, The useless DODOs. third class OFB Services, lazy and parasites DPSUs and nasty CDA officers. usles Service HQ services and Babus who do not fit anywhere in any ministry. MoD need an overhaul. Hundreds of committees and boards have recommended that so many times but everything is subverted there.

Better buy more Chinooks instead of Mi-26.

The Mi-26 had some pretty insane capabilties. The ability to carry fuel bowsers and big equipment inside it to inaccessible locations. 40-50 Chinooks should be kept for tactical purposes of troop transport and artillery and logistics purpose in north east and JK Laddakh & Hiachal, uttarakhand

A smaller band of 8-10 Mi-26 should be purchased for Disaster response and rapid Border infra construction along with Skycranes.

Mi 26 is a different behemoths all together but this behemoth is also a white elephant hard to maintain and a old platform

Tanmay these helicopters are very expensive to buy and maintain. And used very infrequently. Usually in peacetime, you will find ways to move things by road and rail. In wartime, these helis are big targets for enemy.

Ultimately it is a question of price/performance.
