Abandoned Tata-Nano Factory in Singur

One question for Mamata Banerjee, why did you wait for the factory to reach this stage before reviving your agitation? Perhaps for time being you saw more prospect in Nandigram.

What do you expect to be cultivated here if the land is returned to the farmers?

Today you are talking about compensating Tata and set-up Rail wagon factory. Even if it happens ,how you will compensate for the image of the State that got stained.

The Telegraph - Calcutta (Kolkata) | Bengal | Tata plot return

Tata plot return
A STAFF REPORTER

Calcutta, Dec. 26: Chief secretary Asok Mohan Chakrabarti today said the government was about to start the formal process to get the Singur land back form the Tatas.

Asked if the government would ask for the land, he said: “Certainly. Land not being used for the purpose for which it was given has to be returned. We are formalising things. An alternative has to be worked out as it is lying unused. We are in talks with the Tatas.”

Ratan Tata has said he is willing to return the land but only lieu of compensation for the money Tata Motors has spent on the abandoned project.

The chief secretary had earlier said the land could be got back “overnight” but an official today said: “Even if all sides are willing, getting the land is going to be time-consuming.”

Singur may not be as clean-cut an issue as previously thought, during by last visit to the bankura district in september i heard allegations and rumors among the locals regarding the amount of money being handed over to CPM cadres to support the Trinamool congress instead, also disturbing was the news that much of this cash was given to "Didi" by another reputed automotive industrial house of india, based in pune(whom i will not name)that is planning to launch a Rs1 lakh car itself in collaboration with Renault.Other parties may also have been involved.

However saddest is the fate of 4-5000 industrial trainees being trained by Tata for Singur, the company agreed to retain them on the condition they move to Gujarat . many had to opt out of a job they had cherished, also many small businessmen who had moved home and hearth to singur in order to be ready to cater to the influx of Tata employees, they are staring at bankruptcy now.

11,000 land owners for 997 acres? Those plots are barely big enough for a home garden much less subsistance agriculture. No way they actually contribute to the national food supply.

We are often asked this question these days. Our answer is - No, Singur is not a lost game, and we cannot forget it .

Though there is now a 10 foot brick and mortar wall around 997 acres of land, the future of the project is still uncertain. The State Government continues to use a heavy police presence along with the special riot police Rapid Action Force to guard the wall that has been forcibly put up around farmers’ lands. It has put up watch towers that are manned round the clock by the police. The Government knows that the wall will only last as long as the police protect it- the project affected people have sworn to break the wall the moment the police is moved out.

The farmers of Singur (owning about 400 acres) have refused to take cheques even now and have refused to part with their land. The wall’s legitimacy, both in legal terms and in ethical terms is therefore questionable.

Process to get back Tata land at Singur

Sun, Dec 27 05:22 AM

The West Bengal government has finally initiated the process to get the Singur land back from the Tatas. Chief Secretary Asok Mohan Chakrabarti on Saturday said the state government had initiated talks with the Tatas on taking back about 1,000 acres of land given to them for the now abandoned Nano factory in Singur.

Sources said the government had told the Tatas that as per the agreement, there was supposed to be a factory on the land. But since the land was left unused, it should be returned.

Recently, the state government had asked the Railways to set up a coach factory on the land following which Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee went public, asking the former to first get the land back from the Tatas.

Earlier, Tata group chairman Ratan Tata had expressed his willingness to return the land if compensated.

In an unrelated development, the Chief Secretary hinted that the CAB should take responsibility for power outage during the one dayer at the Eden Gardens. "Action will be taken against whoever is responsible. But one must understand that if one invites someone to eat at home and the food is bad, one should own up the responsibility instead of accusing the caterer," said the Chief Secretary.
