I came across something on the internet called HAL Light Observation Helicopter.. model displayed as recently as in Aero India 2009 & kept at HAL museum.
Pretty sleek design, with what looks like armored-glasses like the Lancer light attack helicopter.

So is this dead or merged to the LUH concept?

Does not look like that. Yes, it has some similarities but in that case it wouldn't be in HAL's museum at Bangalore... unless it was some joint development concept.

Why they have to add "Light" in front of every aviation product?
It's getting cringey to be honest.

Better to start small & work the way up... If they started with a Light Tank instead of MBT-80 then it would have had more chances of success, like LCA or LCH.

It looks exactly like that as it is the same helicopter. Did you read the caption under the exhibit?

Was supposed to be another production of French systems in India just like Chinese avicopter do.
Focus later on shifted completely on LUH.

Read the RFI for NUH, it asks for the capability to have some ASW capability so it has to have LWTs and maritime radar. KA226 hasn’t been configured for that once.

IN has shown interest in Ka-226 from early on. It would come aboard ultimately.

Are they going to cancel Ka-226 to buy LUH?
The KA-226 has never been ordered...there was a MOU signed by the govts regarding "studying future possibility of co-operative production" but there has never been any follow-up. Manohar Parrikar put his foot down and insisted on the LUH being the only chopper in this category to be standardized going forward.

Right now LUH can lift only 550kg against Ka-226's 1ton... There's a good chance it'll be inducted, atleast in limited numbers, for now.

Is there any way to strip down 400kg of excess weight? Shakti has over 1000shp, it should be able to lift 1 tonne.

The KA-226 is specifically designed and envisioned to carry underslung cargo. It is essentially a flying crane rather than a people mover. Hence the detachable "pod" type multi-role compartments which are available. However it is most effective to move loads. LUH has some advantages such as being able to carry that 550kg payload over a much larger range of temperature and altitude conditions. KA-226 might still be ordered in some numbers both for mil and civil use but again..those orders have not yet been placed (nor are close to being placed) because there is no real impetus from any potential users.

LUH primary purpose is to replace HAL Cheetal helicopters which operate 23,000 feet and has a range of 346 nm with an endurance of three and a half hours, single-engine Cheetal helicopters, which can barely lift 20 kilos of payload to Siachen Glacier posts like Sonam, which, at 20,997 feet, is the highest inhabited spot on the planet.

The army wanted the LUH to lift 200 kilos to Sonam, But it can deliver 400 kilos, It surely can do more in low altitudes and warm areas.

================

KA-226 can carry bulldozers under slung and meant for such roles which BRO needed.

If such is the case then they must make a stripped down BRO version and cancel Ka-226. Indigenous must take priority.

So it can easily replace Ka-226, no need for Russians. No wonder they haven't ordered it, they are waiting on LUH.
