A little known Battle which influenced the
course of History for India

How the Dutch Fell For A Single Cannon Ball- Battle Of Colachel
It is popularly believed that this event proved the might of the Europeans could be outdone by the courage of an Indian king and his army; that it was the first-ever victory of an Indian kingdom over a European naval force. The story of what has come to be known as The β€˜Battle’ Of Colachel awaits you in the following sections.
1643236289326.png

in picture: Dutch Viceroy Eustachius De Lannoy's surrender at the Battle of Colachel in front of Maharaja Marthanda Varma of Travancore

Surrounded by the waters of the Arabian Sea on one side and the Western Ghats on the other, Kerala has been an attraction to people from all over the world since ancient times. The culture and heritage of this small piece of land in South India have a story that starts a long time back from now. The Babylonians and Assyrians traded here millennia before Christ. The edicts of Emperor Ashoka talk about the land of the Keralaputras as an independent land beyond his empire’s frontiers in South India.

At the beginning of the 18th century, the Malabar coast region of present-day Kerala was divided among several political powers. In 1729, a courageous young king ascended the throne of the southern kingdom of Travancore. Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma extended the boundaries of his kingdom by conquering the neighbouring territories, kingdoms and principalities. Among these were the principality of Attingal and the strategically important port of Kollam.

Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma of Travancore

During this time, the Dutch enjoyed monopoly over the trade in the west coast, This was when the Kerala King decided to conquer Odanad, the place known for its black pepper production. The Dutch, who till then had not been a barrier to the king’s progress, found it difficult to digest the fact that Marthanda Varma’s expansionist policy dishounoured their trade rights, which was going to have huge economic impact on the Dutch East India Company

The Dutch Governor of Sri Lanka, Gustaaf Willem van Imhoff visited Cochin in 1739 to study the situation. Varma’s conquests of the surrounding kingdoms had upset the power equilibrium; van Imhoff believed this was forcing the Dutch to abandon their rather β€˜peaceful’ stance in Kerala so far.

Kerala was a prized jewel in the Dutch’s trading interests; they refused to accord Kerala an β€˜ordinary’ status, which would subject people to extra duties. Perhaps the immediate opportunity for Dutch intervention came with the deposed Princess Elayadathu Swarupam. The princess, who had been imprisoned at Travancore, escaped. This gave van Imhoff the perfect opportunity; championing the cause of the princess, he could play the adjudicator in the restoration of her kingdom. He met Marthanda Varma personally to warn him about military action against the Kingdom of Travancore. To the Governor’s surprise, the young King replied that he was planning to Invade the Netherlands someday (according to some accounts; Europe) kekekekekek:cool3:.
The Dutch failing in their diplomatic endeavours and enraged by the King’s reply, waged war on the Kingdom of Travancore by the end of 1739.

The Dutch deployed troops from Lanka and achieved several successes in the initial campaign. The troops forced the Travancore forces to retreat from Kollam up to Tangasseri.
In early December they also marched towards Attingal, Varkala and tasted success again
1643237956087.png

Though met with fierce resistance, The Dutch Captured Colachel by 1741
The Dutch stationed troops there and continued capturing nearby villages thereby moving closer to Padmanabhapuram (the capital of Travancore kingdom) day by day. During their advance, they looted and destroyed the regions under King Marthanda Varma, which added to the woes of Travancore. One might expect the following sections to depict how the Dutch captured the capital of Travancore. But fate had much more in store for both the armies battling it out on the coast of Colachel.

Short on Troops and Supplies, The Company requested supplies and men from both Lanka and Batavia, the capital of Dutch controlled Indonesia
To the horror of their base in India, the Dutch government couldn’t send any new troops due to the Java uprising in Indonesia. Marthanda Varma who was eagerly waiting for a chance to take revenge on the Dutch took full advantage of the shortage of troops. The King decided to cut the supplies to the Dutch garrison. The naval boats of Travancore ensured this in the sea and the army blocked on land

A matter of interest here is that the Army of Travancore didn’t have any siege equipment and therefore the King planned to starve the much stronger Dutch enemy of its supplies. The King’s well-designed approach helped the Travancore army blockade the Dutch from all four sides. The Dutch forces were well outnumbered by the Nair Brigade. The heavy winds, rain and floods at the same time ensured that the Dutch had no dry gunpowder, thus reducing their ammunition capacities. Fate still haunted them when a fire destroyed all the food provisions they had.

The Dutch were rendered helpless and were forced to either starve or surrender; they chose the latter.
24 Dutch officers were taken hostage including D'lannoy himself
Marthanda Varma killed two birds with one stone: not only did he defeat the Dutch to take over the highly profitable pepper trade, he also got a skilled European Admiral to train his army in the modern techniques of war. Admiral De Lannoy was later promoted to the rank of β€˜Valiya Kappithan’ (Chief Admiral) of the Travancore forces. He was instrumental in the construction of the Nedumkotta, which is a line of fortifications in Northern Travancore, which helped defend it against Tipu Sultan’s invasion later in the century.

After his death, the Dutch Admiral was buried in Udayagiri Fort, also known as Dillanai Kotta(De'lannoy's fort)

There is a good reason to believe that colonies of Romans for trade was present in South India in 2nd c. ad, & european soldiers described as powerful Yavanas & dumb Mlecchas clad in armour acted as bodyguards to Tamil kings... " -- Early History of India, pg 400-401, V. Smith

Poonjabi pashtun, ancestors settled in poonjab in past. Doesn't speak pashto or follow codex " Pashtuwali " hence not a real pashtun in eyes of many pashtuns.
Fyi this pashtunfags put grass in their mouth and routinely begged from Dogra saying "we are your cows" Dograji.
Dograsownedpashtun.jpg

Even that Olaf Caroe in his work the Pathans attests to this β€˜peculiar habit’ of typical pashtun.

When this Gulab Singh Dogra sold those pashtun women to his soldiers to recover money DOGRAS had paid to Hunt Down their husband.

Then these chutiya pashtunfags responded by running away and abandoning all of their women.

Raja here is Jagat Singh Pathania of Nurpur state ( Himachal Pradesh ). He was one of the biggest Mughal mansabdar with mansabdari of 12,000 man & 8,000 horses.

He crushed rebellion in Afghanistan & helped Timurids conquered Zamindawar and Lashkargah and was Part of Shah Jahan 1644-65 Central Asian campaign & conquered Balkh and Badakhshan for Timurids.

Some history.

Jagat Singh Pathania was born in a Nurpur state of Himachal Pradesh in a Pathania clan of Rajputs.

Pathania are sub clan of Tomar Rajputs & was founded by Jetpal Tomar....younger brother of Angpal Tomar II ( ruler of Delhi ).

He had entered Mughal service very early at the age of 21 and said to have been very very close to empress Nur Jahan and according to Tuzk-e-Jahangiri enjoyed her confidence which will help him save his head later in his life. He helped Timurids capture impregnable Kangra fort in 1620 & thus alienating himself from other Rajputs of hills permanently.

Rebellion against heavy taxation for construction of Taj Mahal 1630-1642
.

In 1630 he rebelled against Shah Jahan & sided with his own countrymen of Nurpur who were starving during the famine and decided to pay taxes from his own pocket and managed to save his country from starvation and hunger till 1642.

Continuous scarcity of rains for three years created one of the deadliest famines in indian & World History.....the Deccan famine of 1630-32.

It afflicted the Gujarat, Malwa and Deccan regions as it was precisely here that Mughals ran their devastating campaign. While the entire province lay dead, Shah Jahan's war camp was β€œfair and spacious, plentifully stored with all provisions, being supplied with all things from all parts, far and near”. While people in the entire province were dying due to famine caused by his own army, Shahjahan was busy collecting money for construction of Taj Mahal which began on 1632. Taxes in Mughal empire were among the highest in the world. According to the estimates of J.N.U scholar Shireen Moosvi, Mughals took 56.7% of total produce of peasants.

state's revenue which was needed to quell the famine was instead diverted to build Taj Mahal.

According to contemporary sources like the letter written by Dutch East India Company(VOC) lawyer, the famine led to 7.4 million deaths. This was a man made famine. And one man whose lust for power and wealth knew no bounds was responsible for it. In contrast to Mughal tax regime of 1632.Hindu kings like Raja Jagat Singh and Raja of Bundelkhand took only one-sixth (16.6%) as laid out in the Hindu scriptures.

So, they rebelled as they didn't want to create famines in their countries.

Bundelkhand rebellion by Jhujhar Dingh was brutally crushed in 1635 but Jagat Singh continued to struggle till 1642.

the year main mausoleum of Taj Mahal was completed and no more additional funds were needed.

He fortified three forts.....Mau, Nurpur, Taragarh for upcoming Mughal assault. Overwhelming Mughal & allies numbers finally manage to breakthrough and Mau, Nurpur fell to Timurids. Detail siege of these forts exist in 'Badshahnamah' mughal records.

Taragarh was the most fortified & last to fall.
according to local folklores it took huge Mughal army 12 years to annex it. It is said that Mughal forces surrounding the fort had planted Mango saplings which fruited in the course of siege and soldiers enjoyed their fruits (this place near Taragarh fort is to day called β€˜Amb ka Bagh’ literally meaning β€˜Mango Orchard’).

Many Timurid commander like khusru Beg & Asaf Khan died during it's long siege. Rajputs were forced to eat vermin as theirs ration ran out. However to fool Timurids Rajputs one day decided to make kheer ( milk pudding ) from female dog milk which used to feed herself at surrounding Mughal camps but have given Litter inside the fort.
they then threw those pudding out of fort. Mughal soldiers saw this & show it to their commander's who couldn't believe that Rajputs are feasting even after such a long siege. Emperor decided to negotiate & end the siege & so siege came to an end but on jagat Singh terms..... he & his son life was spared along with his man. It is said that if it wasn't for Begum Nur Jahan he would have been killed.

He would go on to serve Timurid once again & will join Timurid Central asian campaign with his own 14,000 Rajputs
& will serve with distinction. He died on his way back home in a brutal snow storm in NWFP.

He was immortalized by the poet Gambhir Rai , who wrote of his military expeditions four years after he had died & compared him to Maurya ruler Ashoka.

IAS is NOT one of the toughest exam. All you need to have is perseverance to attend coaching classes and memorise the notes religiously. Many UP-Bihar guys begin attending coaching courses as early as standard 10!

These exams actually filter OUT the real meritorious boys and girls who wouldn't have the time or energy to memorise notes after notes and instead study actual vocational or academic courses that have real application in the world.
And it’s not just IAS , IPS you will find Bihari students in big numbers each and every government medical college in india same with engineering colleges so i think this culture of preparaing and qualifying for competitive exams has now become a trait
and remember Traits are determined by genes, and also they are determined by the interaction with the environment with genes.
So when it comes to qualifying for competitive exams Biharis do have superior genetics compared to others
I am not racist or any kind of Nationalist and I don’t believe that any race or ethnicity is superior to other but some ethnicities and races do have some peculiar traits which they have developed as a result of adaptations and natural selection
Those people who live in mountains have higher vital capacity and tidal volume compared to those who live in plains RBC count is also high because the Oxygen is low and they have developed this trait as a result of adaptations and natural selection
There is no denying that Biharis too have developed this peculiar trait of savant level of memory power and learning abilities the cognition and focus has improved generation by generation and it’s much higher compared to other ethnicities in india and that’s the reason why Bihar produces highest number of IAS and IPS officers despite the lowest GDP per capita there is no other reason
I find Biharis in India to be somewhat similar to jews in USA they too are known for qualifying for white collar jobs

Biharis do have superior genetics compared to others
I am not racist or any kind of Nationalist and I don’t believe that any race or ethnicity is superior to other but some ethnicities and races do have some peculiar traits which they have developed as a result of adaptations and natural selection
And those are variations and selection of the particular variation as a process of adaptation to environment and not any x or Bihari trait. The origins of these traits by variation climate change and changes in environmental factors results in the natural section of the adaptive variations.

Natural Selection does not target anything. The selection operates in response to the circumstantially imposed as well as climatically mediated and environmental challenges.

Thus its is the environment which targets a particular charachter or in simple words determines the fitness of a particular gene that is trait or character which will survive in that environment or will die out.

Bc aise toh I will tell you a fun fact.

Did you know Mensa in Delhi administered its internationally recognized iq test to over 4000 underprivileged children in Delhi and Ncr as part of a unique project aimed at identifying and mentoring poor children with high iq . Of the 102 extremely bright children it selected, over a dozen, including a girl named Amisha achieved an iq score of 145 plus which puts her in the genius category. The others achieved iq scores of 130-145 which puts them in the category of β€˜very gifted’ children.

That being said there can be no average iq generalization for a huge country like BHARAT. We always have abundance of millions of hidden gems awaiting just for a push and opportunity and security.

So now see buddy none of your argument is neither factually legit nor feasible.

IAS, IPS, IRS and whatever - the civil service.

Do you seeiously mean gene and genetics and natural selection? Really? Do you even have the idea how genetic traits are developed over generations? Gene for competitive examination for Govt service! Wtf!

The number of civil servants and sundry other govt officials coming from UP-Bihar is the result of poor economic opportunities in other sectors available in those places. When in other states students prepare for other kind of jobs or business, UP-Bihar students focus on attending coaching classes. And that shit has nothing to do with genetic trait or natural selection, unless you are trying to mean that genetic traits in 2-3 generations at the most has moulded UP-Bihar students into corrupt people all together that makes them pick the corruption in govt sector.

I mean wtf!
