What language did Indians use to communicate among themselves before Hindi and vernacular languages in their modern form were properly developed? That Mukesh Khanna episode with Chandraprakash Dwivedi of Chanakya fame got me thinking where they had a long discussion about Sanskrit and Hindi.

Our tryst with hedonism & decadence began quite early & not in latter half of the first millennium as was widely speculated. Any idea how widely was the above Prakrit work read by people? In my opinion our failures with Central Asians has go to do with purely military in nature rather than hedonism.

Prakrit was always the lingua franca unlike Sanskrit which was the language of the classes & also of some courts. General hedonism leads to a fall in moral standards which then affects every part of society.

Then there's the deleterious effects of the sharamana religion on society & kings namely their extreme emphasis on non violence .

Lots of cross currents across the ages & generations are usually responsible for effecting foundational changes in the standards of a society. It's rarely a single source or cause.

Question: When the Marathas had overrun and taken back most of the subcontinent, why did they not go about rebuilding the stolen temples such as Ayodhya and Gyanvaapi, along with 40,000 others? I know of only a dozen or so cases where they rebuilt stolen temples, especially in the South. This seems like a huge oversight on their end when they had all the power to do it.

they didn’t last too long to do anything concrete about it. They probably did but due to their short lived dynasty their gains were probably overturned and forgotten.
