Column: An indigenous arms card

Prior to India's Independence, the PM-in-waiting Pandit Nehru had asked a distinguished British scientist and later a Nobel laureate Sir Patrick Blackett as to how long will it take to 'Indianise the military', referring primarily to minimising India's dependence on foreign equipment and secondarily to Indianise the military manpower structure (overwhelmingly dominated by the British nationals in the officer corps during the time). Sir Blackett answered that it could take 18 months in the short term and many decades in the long term for self-reliance in Indian defence!

New Tactical short-range missile test July-end : DRDO

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed a new tactical short-range missile which has greater accuracy than the unguided missiles currently being used by the Indian Army.Called Prahar, the missile has a range of 150 km. Six missiles can be loaded on to a single launcher, making it more cost-effective than others, said V.K. Saraswat, defence department secretary and DRDO director-general.

The Prahar system can tackle multiple targets and allows a mix of different kinds of missiles to be used from a single launcher. The missile will be tested for the first time at the end July, Mr Saraswat said.

Drdo should converted to Dro (defense research organization) excluding some strategic weapons. It should concentrate on advance research only. They can develop IP and sell/ share it to public sectors and / or private sectors to develop end products. Competition
in product development in private/public sectors will produce result . So that every one can make money and accountable.

Country flag
The official, who has not been identified by the committee in its report, gave the example of the recent Indo-US deal for supply of 10 Boeing C-17s to Indian Air Force (IAF), under which India's premier military research agency Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) will get high altitude engine test facility and a wind tunnel facility, both firsts in the country.
