Compared to CV-16 Liaoning's cruise to these same waters in 2022, Shandong's tour is much more intensive: CV-17 has launched 610 sorties so far to CV-16's 320 sorties last year.

Meanwhile, the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group docked in Thailand on Monday as part of a port visit until Saturday.

The Shandong CSG then sailed into the South China Sea. On Monday, Japanese officials observed a total of 10 J-15 fighters sorties as well as launches of Z-18 helicopters had been observed by Japan Maritime Self Defense Force destroyer Akebono(DD-108). From Thursday to Friday, Shandong, along with several other PLAN ships, sailed toward the South China Sea. Though it did not detail which ships accompanied Shandong, the JSO on Wednesday stated destroyers CNS Guilin (164) and CNS Changsha (173), frigates CNS Xianning (500) and CNS Xuchang (536) and fleet oiler CNS Chaganhu (905) were with the carrier.
