BRAHMOS attracts high-level delegates at IDEX 2011

The BRAHMOS supersonic cruise missile system has attracted many high-level delegates, including from the Middle East region, during the International Defence Exhibition (IDEX) 2011 at Abu dhabi.

The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, visited the BrahMos Aerospace pavilion at the IDEX on Wednesday.

He was briefed about the supersonic cruise missile system and its various capabilities by company CEO and MD Dr. A S Pillai.

BrahMos Aerospace is participating in the 10th edition of the International Defence Exhibition 2011.

The BRAHMOS supersonic cruise missile system has a range of up to 290 km with a maximum speed of 2.8 Mach. The missile can be launched from multiple platforms including land, sea, sub-sea and air.

While the Indian Army and Navy have already inducted the missile system in their arsenal, the Indian Air Force is getting ready to equip its SU-30MKI fighters with the powerful missiles in near future.

Blocks to protect Indian mountains

The Indian armed forces have been successfully working on an armaments programme using various modifications of the BrahMos missile, which was initially conceived as a Russian-Indian project.

The Indian armed forces have been successfully working on an armaments programme using various modifications of the BrahMos missile, which was initially conceived as a Russian-Indian project.

Russia's NPO Mashinostroeniya and India's Defence Research and Development Organisation established the joint venture BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited in 1998. The new anti-ship cruise missile was modelled after the Soviet Union's Oniks system (called Yakhont for export markets) and is distinguished by its outstanding technical features. The joint efforts of Russian and Indian specialists have resulted in the emergence of a new series of cruise missiles that are superior to any of their global analogues. There are different versions of the missile capable of striking both ship-based and land-based targets. They can be launched from aircraft (Su-30MKI), ships, submarines and land.

Several different variations of the missile have been created for the army and categorised into different blocks.

The BrahMos Block I land-attack missile, which is capable of striking visible radio-contrast targets, has been fully developed and is used by the Indian army. Block II was set up to strike at less visible targets and features both target-seeking equipment and satellite navigation.

The Indian army is now expected to place orders for a shipment of the Block III supersonic missiles, which are capable of striking targets in mountainous terrain with a high level of accuracy, according to BrahMos Aerospace CEO Sivathanu Pillai. The new missile combines the best features of the first two blocks. Dr. Pillai said the two technologies were used to create a product with the configuration of an anti-ship missile that can also strike targets on land. It has a radar seeker that can strike all radio-contrast targets, infrastructure, buildings, radio detection equipment, radar stations and air force bases – any object that reflects the appropriate signal.

One of the main features of the new missile is its ability to scale mountainous terrains, find the target and strike. There are no other supersonic cruise missiles with such features in the world. The Russian and Indian scientists managed to accomplish an extremely complicated task.

"It was almost impossible to do: to ensure manoeuvring and the nosedive when the missile is travelling at supersonic speed. Nobody has ever made anything of this kind. Nobody has even tried to do it. We managed to do it, and quite successfully at that," Dr. Pillai said proudly.

Dr. Pillai said the ramjet system is fully operational and ensures the missile travels at a speed of approximately Mach 2.8. Block III is considered the world's first supersonic missile capable of travelling in the mountains. When Russian and Indian scientists work together, they are capable of working wonders, the BrahMos Aerospace CEO said, and it is a hard point to argue.

The BrahMos Aerospace press service told Rossiyskaya Gazeta that the new missile system is fully prepared for production and that the company is currently determining the configuration of a missile facility for the army and the number of launching pads that will be needed.

In addition, Dr. Pillai said the joint venture has developed a version of the BrahMos that can be launched from underwater. A test launch is planned for this year.

"Our submarine-launched missile has already been developed," he said. The plan is to launch the missile from a special pontoon on a stand just beneath the water. "We think we will make the launch this year and wrap up this work," Dr. Pillai said.

India to test-fire submarine-launched BrahMos

New Delhi:
India will test-fire the submarine-launched version of the 290km range BrahMos supersonic cruise missile by the end of 2011.

"We will test-fire the underwater version of the missile by the end of this year (2011) after we get the pontoon for the purpose," BrahMos Aerospace chief A Sivathanu Pillai said in New Delhi.

Underwater weapon-delivery platforms are considered to be the most potent second strike capability of countries' defence strength.

India has developed significant underwater weapon delivery platforms in the recent past including an indigenously-built nuclear submarine INS Arihant and successfully test-fired the nuclear capable 700km range K-15 Shaurya missile.

The Navy is also expecting to get a Russian-made Akula-II class 'Nerpa' nuclear submarine on lease soon.

The test-firing of the BrahMos underwater missile would be done from a pontoon at Integrated Test Range in Balasore on Orissa coast from a DRDO facility.

The same pontoon was used for carrying out the test-firing of the 700-km range K-15 'Shaurya' submarine launched ballistic missile a couple of years ago.

A ring will have to be fitted in the existing pontoon for fitting-in the BrahMos which has a relatively smaller diameter than the K-15 SLBM.

The under-water cruise missile will have the same capabilities as its earlier variants and would be able to strike at both land and sea-based targets. BrahMos has been developed jointly by India and Russia and inducted in the Army and the Navy.

The two countries have also signed an agreement for developing the hypersonic version of the missile which currently flies at a speed of 2.8 mach.

India is also planning to deploy BrahMos on the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) being developed with Russia.

"If we are able to reduce the weight of the missile below two tonnes, we can deploy it on the FGFA and we are looking to do that in future," Pillai

said.

FGFA is joint venture aircraft development programme between India and Russia under which India will induct 250-300 of these advanced planes.

The missile is already being developed for deployment on Su-30MKIs of the Indian Air Force.

Asked if the missile could be put on other aircraft such as the LCA or the proposed Medium-Multirole Combat Aircraft (M-MRCA), Pillai said it would not be possible for the LCA as it was a small aircraft.

Pillai said the three Services have placed orders worth $4 billion with BrahMos including the orders for the land version of cruise missile by the Indian Air Force.

The BrahMos chief denied there were disputes between India and Russia over the modifications being carried out in the Su-30MKIs being upgraded to fire-from-the-air version of the missile.

"The trials of launching BrahMos cruise missile from air will begin in 2012 and there will be no delay in the programme due to this," he added.

India, Russia spar over BrahMos missile air version

http://www.hindustantimes.com/India...hMos-missile-air-version/Article1-672704.aspx

The India-Russia plan to fit the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile on their Sukhoi aircraft is in trouble with the two sides sparring over who will foot the bill to modify the fighter jet's design. The shadow boxing, which is being carried out behind closed doors at the moment, is over Russia's dema
nd for additional costs to rework the Su-30 fighter aircraft's design so that a remodelled, lighter BrahMos missile can be integrated onto it.

Though BrahMos Aerospace managing director Apathukatha Sivathanu Pillai denied there were any difference of opinion between the joint venture partners on who will fit the bill for the Sukhoi modification, he did admit that price negotiations were in progress.

"That is under discussion. That is not finalised," Pillai said at a Meet the Press event organised by the Press Club of India here Saturday, where he was asked what was the price demanded by Russia for the Sukhoi redesigning.

"There is no dispute with them. Any discussion takes time. We are also looking at our own design. We will not delay the project," he said.

Noting that India had asked Russia to do the redesigning of the Sukhoi aircraft as it was a platform from their stable and they were the primary developers of the aircraft, Pillai said: "But we also have the capability to do the redesigning and if need be, we can also do that."

Defence Ministry sources have indicated that Bangalore-based Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), that is currently producing the Su-30MKI under license from the Russians for the Indian Air Force, has been asked to submit a plan for the work and they have carried out a preliminary study on the redesigning so that India could do it alone if the Russians pressed hard for more money.

Pillai also noted that the air force version of BrahMos will be lighter and smaller in size than the 3,900-kg land-based cruise missile (with 290-km range) already inducted by the Indian Army.

Sukhoi itself will need to be modified by strengthening its airframe so it can carry BrahMos, which will be the heaviest of all its missile weighing 2,500 kg.

The missile is capable of carrying a 300-kg conventional warhead.

The air force version will also have some changes in its design to suit the "drop and fire" mechanism that would be employed by the Sukhois, which will have the capability to carry one of the BrahMos in its underbelly.

The launcher for the air force version is already been designed and is being produced in India, Pillai noted.

The BrahMos chief also noted that the supersonic cruise missile were already inducted by the Indian army and navy.

The current order for BrahMos missiles, Pillai said, was worth $4 billion, a profitable enterprise considering that the total investment from India and Russia for the project was only $300 million. India shared 50.5 percent of the cost and Russia 49.5 percent.

He also said that several countries have shown keen interest in buying BrahMos, as it was the only supersonic, precision-strike and steep-dive cruise missile in the world at the moment.

"Both the Indian and Russian governments have approved exports. In fact, all the three services... army, navy and air force... have signed agreements accepting export of the BrahMos missile," he said.

But the only request of the Indian government and the armed forces was that the joint venture first meet their requirements before export orders are considered. "They are not against it (exports)," Pillai added.

in another article they are talking about brahmos on more planes?? Anyway Nirbhay is also going on sukhois and it has greater range than the air launched brahmos; this is probably a money issue, every time a project gets close to completion Russians have been raising their price.

It is time to put off the heat and get on with the work. I don't understand why the INDIAN AUTHORITIES are making such a fuss over the issue of money when they are paying the money to the U.S. firms without any bargain. It should be seen that either the chinese or the pakistanis do not get their hands on this "beauty".

The "Fuss" over money is because Russian companies are inefficient and they have huge cost overruns. Either they do not understand the scope of the project or they deliberately propose lower costs to undercut any potential competition. In any case, whether it is the Su-30 MKI, the Mig-29upg, the Gorschkov or the Brahmmos, for every Indo-Russ project there have been huge cost overruns.
This is rarely the case with US or European (or Israeli) companies, since they have better project management and quote realistic costs.

Scorpene Submarines, A-400M,F-35 the list is ever growing btw its normal that's India should foot the bill for Russia to modify Su-30MKI structure to launch Brahmos.

Personally, I think Russia keeps shooting itself in the foot. Before long the Indian Market will be either Domestic or Western. In short Russia may wake up soon and wonder what happen to the Indian Defense Market.......

Russia Spat Delays BrahMos Air Version

A war of words between India and Russia is threatening to delay the development of the air version of the BrahMos cruise missile, a joint effort of the two countries.

Friction between the two countries mainly stems from the redesigning of the Sukhoi-30 fighter aircraft to make it capable of launching a 300-kg BrahMos supersonic missile from the air.

While the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) wants its Russian partner, NPO Mashinostroeyenia, to foot the bill, the latter feels that India should be financing the Sukhoi redesigning.

Irked by the unreasonable demands placed by Russia, India has decided to go it alone. The DRDO has asked Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to submit a plan for the Sukhoi redesigning.

HAL's technicians have done a preliminary study and have conveyed to the BrahMos Aerospace that they can undertake the task at a "much, much lesser cost".

Top sources told this newspaper that though the Russians are ready to undertake the redesigning, "they are asking a lot of money". Sources, however, refused to reveal the exact bill Russians wanted to slap on the DRDO.

When asked whether "is it something like a hundred crores", pat came the reply: "Many, many hundred crores!"

But more than the amount it's the Russian style of business that has irked Indian defence scientists. "They are preventing us from undertaking the job, citing a clause in the transfer of technology pact," said a source. "They won't do it for a reasonable amount and aren't allowing us to do it either."

The standoff has already delayed the testing of the air version of the missile. "We have made the launcher that would be integrated with the Sukhoi. It has been ground-tested. But we need to confirm our studies by firing a missile from it when the aircraft is engaged in high-speed manoeuvres," sources said.

For carrying the missile, Sukhoi's underbelly will have to be further strengthened and reinforced. "There will be some structural changes to the fuselage too," said the source. "This will allow the Sukhoi to continue to carry its normal menu of missiles and anti-aircraft guns."

The Russian reaction to the DRDO's move is still awaited. "Well, they normally engage us in these who-will-blink-first games," added the source. "But this time we wanted to clearly communicate that we can't be fatigued out of this. If all goes well, we will have the first test flight before the yearend."

Abdul Kalam for hypersonic version of BrahMos missile

Former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on Sunday asked the BrahMos aerospace company to develop an advanced version of the cruise missile to maintain India's leadership in this field.

"You should develop a hypersonic version of BrahMos which can be reused...meaning that the missile should be able to deliver its payload and return to base. This will help in maintaining our leadership in this arena," he said.

The former President was addressing a function on the 10th anniversary of the launch of BrahMos supersonic cruise missile.

India is the only country to have a supersonic cruise missile developed in a joint venture with Russia.

Speaking on the occasion, BrahMos Aerospace chief A. Sivathanu Pillai said BrahMos is a unique missile which can be configured for multiple types of platforms on land, on sea and underwater against different types of targets on land and sea.

"Its competitor is yet to be born. Its speed and devastating power has made it unparalleled," he said.

The missile system has already been inducted in the Army and the Navy and its orders for the next ten years from all the three services.

Work is also underway to develop an air-launched and underwater version of the missile.

The first launch was carried out a decade ago at the Interim Test Range at Chandipur-on-sea which coincided with Russia Formation Day which falls on June 12.

The name BrahMos is a portmanteau formed from the names of two rivers, the Brahmaputra of India and the Moskva of Russia.

The missile travels at speeds of Mach 2.8 to 3.0 and is about three-and-a-half times faster than the US' subsonic Harpoon cruise missile.
