If these messaging and social networking apps are really such a security risk, India should ban foreign apps and make its own.

India should also ban its defense personnel from downloading any smartphone app or visiting any website.

Report: NSA has been hacking Angry Birds for years

NSA infiltrates links to Yahoo, Google data centers worldwide, Snowden documents say - The Washington Post
Quote from the AllVoices article:

Hey, I've always been supportive of government collection of metadata. I believe the NSA when they say data surveillance is an essential tool for fighting terrorism. But when they start looking at my online dating and porn habits, that's where I draw the line.
I think we can all agree :)

I'm thinking of investing in Weixin.
that is gonna be a wise investment. Tencent's stock price is soaring recently after it launched a successful campaign during Chinese spring festival to promote its online payment tool which is attached to weixin.

Tencent for sure is gonna be a very promising companies.

In a top secret internal communication to all military commanders, the Director General of Military Operations has asked all army personnel and their family members to restrict use of mobile applications, whose servers are hosted outside India, as it can lead to "inadvertent loss of sensitive information".

I don't understand If this was a top secret communication between military commanders then how this thing got in media ,may be they were communicating there top secret message through "Whats App" .
These media guys always put a topping on cake .
May be the top secret internal communication was done by WeChat.

On topic... why not NSA develops something which can be used by Indians and something more specific for Security Forces... 1.2 Billion Indians still need foreign maal? Always happy to make software's for others so why not own?

I think we are more concerned with head count rather than innovation. Hence IMO, Indian S/w companies are miserably failing in this area.

India SHOULD throw away the "follower" mindset... it's ok that foreigners are way ahead in lot of things but we have enough potential to innovate.

When would the local companies start a R&D infrastructure to push innovative stuff on front on a large scale? These companies have earned ENOUGH but their hunger for working for $$$ doesn't seems to end.

what do you think Obama was truely regretting, that NSA spied on India or that people find out their secret spying project?

You must be innocent to buy American president's cheap lip services.

on weChat the latest game during Chinese New Year is "red envelope" i.e. send out a "envelope" - an amount of money to a group of users (friends, relatives whatever) for them each to click to open an "envelope" with a random sum.

also on weChat one can trade monetary mutual funds. in this field Tencent (weChat) is in intensive competition with Alibaba / Alipay (Chinese equivalents of Amazon /Paypal). Chinese banks get nervous as a big deal of their deposits hv bn diverted away by such non conventional e-portals more than social networking.

alright , I wish u a happy new year despite the insecurity.

If you had to invest in the Chinese tech sector, Tencent (developer of WeChat) would be the ideal company to invest in - high recurring cashflow, aggressive, growth-focused management team (unlike the ivory-tower owner of Baidu), and a meritocratic culture as it relates to making the best apps and code.

The mathematical possibility of military action by China against India is higher.
But the mathematical possibility of americans spying on India through IT companies is 100%, while uncertainty exists about China spying on India through wechat. Given the fact that Tencent is largely owned by an south African investor, i doubt Tencent would be cooperative with CCP in this regard.

If indians are truely concerned with your national security, it's time to re-prioritize your agendas.

America spies on India for the interests of its national security, and the interests of its businesses. China spies on India not just for those two, but also has offensive military objectives, in which having the edge with intelligence helps. Therefore, India can ill-afford Chinese internet services.

Do I have to spoon-feed everything for you?

Pardon me please if I am being annoying. I am just curious why Indian members could act so indifferent after knowing the Internet services you are using everyday are also serving as spying tools.

I disagree with your arguments that americans are gathering information about India for only two purposes and even if you are right it's still endangering Indian national security.

Interest conflicts between America and India seems unlikely in a near future, but if we put it into a bigger picture and consider the long term, people will realise that you two are not actually on the same page with every issue. One thing for sure, Americans wont accept India's growing ambition in Indian ocean.

Certainly, the contest in Indian ocean will not lead to war, but war is not the only thing that will jeopardize Indian security.

There are a lot of things America could do with Indian society through Facebook, Google, Twitter, etc, such as manipulating the coming Indian prime minister election, something they are absolutely capable of.

However, i respect your concern in spite of my disagreement.
