These are surface-to-surface missiles. They are using these to hit boats.

The missile firing demo was awesome. Also, I like the smokeless propellant. This is very important. I wouldn't want to be on a ship that remains covered with smoke after a missile is launched.

It is better to use naval artillery for this purpose.

Akash missile test fired successfully

India on Monday successfully test- fired its indigenously developed surface-to-air 'Akash' missile from a test range in Odisha as part of user trial by the Air Force. "The sophisticated Akash missile was test-fired from launch complex-3 of the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur at about 3.18 pm," defence sources said. Describing the trial of the missile "fully successful", ITR director M V K V Prasad told PTI that it hit a para barrel target. "Some more similar trials of the missile will be conducted in this week," he said. 'Akash' missile is a medium range surface-to-air anti-aircraft defence system with a strike range of 25 km and can carry a warhead of 60 kg. It has the capability to target aircraft up to 30 km away and is packed with a battery that can track and attack several targets simultaneously. With its capability to neutralise aerial targets like fighter jets, cruise missiles and air-to-surface missiles, defence experts compare 'Akash' to the similar weapons of many other advanced countries, the sources said. 'Akash' has been developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as part of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme. While the Air Force version has already been inducted, the Army version is in the final stage of induction, the defence sources said.

Akash missile successfully test fired for second day

For the second consecutive day, India on Tuesday successfully test-fired its indigenously developed surface-to-air 'Akash' missile from a test range in Odisha as part of user trial by the air force. The trial of the missile was 'fully successful', said ITR director M V K V Prasad adding it hit a para-barrel target. The test- fire was a practice and evaluation trial for a new squadron and a repeat performance as the medium range missile had been test-fired successfully on Monday from the same test range. "Some more similar trials of the missile will be conducted in this week," he said. Defence sources said the missile was test-fired from launch complex-3 of the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur at about 3.22 PM. BALASORE : Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel test-fired medium range surface-to-air missile Akash from the Chandipur-based test range off the Odisha coast for the third consecutive day on Wednesday. The missile destroyed an aerial target at low lying altitude successfully. Defence sources said the indigenously developed sophisticated missile with a dummy payload was launched in full operational configuration from the launching complex-III of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at about 11.20 am. While on Monday two rounds of the missile were fired from the same test range at two separate para-barrels, on Tuesday one missile was fired at a paraflare dropped from a fighter aircraft. Both the missions were successful. The tests were a part of IAF's practice and evaluation exercise for a new squadron. The repeat performance of the medium range missile proved the readiness of the weapon system and its reliability. A defence official said all mission parameters were validated during the test and the IAF was likely to carry out more such tests in the coming days. Akash, India's first indigenously designed missile, is capable of engaging aerial threats upto a distance of approximately 25 km. The missile, which has a launch weight of 720 kg, a length of 5.8 metres and a diameter of 35 cm, can carry a pay load of 50 kg.

Guided by state-of-the-art ground radar, two Akash surface-to-air missiles were simultaneously launched against two flying targets by the Indian Air Force personnel from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Balasore District of Odisha, on Thursday. Flying at supersonic speed, one of the missiles engaged and destroyed a moving unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) at a range of 11 km, while the other missile's warhead detonated near its moving target comprising para flares at a range of 24 km. The para flares were dropped by a fighter aircraft. The exercise of launching the two missiles simultaneously was carried out by IAF personnel as part of their user-training. According to official sources, the UAV was destroyed in a direct hit by the missile which was equipped with a 55 kg warhead. The missiles were randomly selected from the production lot and launched for the mission. Akash is a medium range air defence system. Each system comprises the missile, the launcher, the ground system and the radar which has the capability to simultaneously track 64 targets. Aided by the ground radar, eight missiles could be launched simultaneously to engage and destroy four targets. Akash missile has a strike range of 25-30 km and was developed as part of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme of the Defence Research and Development Organisation. The system has already been inducted into the Air Force and Army.

Smashing week for India's Akash SAM. Not that it needed any more of a push. But what a week. This image from noon on Friday is the first one out from this week's training user trials of the Akash SAM conducted by the Indian Air Force at the Integrated Test Range (Nov 17-21). This particular test on Friday at 12.10pm involved a quick succession salvo test in which the two SAMs in the picture were fired at Meggitt Defence Systems Banshee Jet 80 aerial targeting drones. The New Indian Express quotes a source as saying, "While the first missile successfully destroyed a fast moving aerial target at a low altitude, the second missile had a direct hit with the unmanned aerial target Banshee Jet 80 nearly 4-km away at 35 meter altitude above sea level proving the system's capability against subsonic cruise missile." (While this is largely what I hear from my sources too, I'm picking up that that the range was more out to about 8-km in the low-altitude engagement and about 24-km for the second missile). Starting Monday, a random selection of production series Akash missiles were fired at a series of targets ranging from para barrels, flare targets and on two occasions the Banshee Jet 80 drone.

BALASORE: Surface-to-air supersonic missile Akash on Friday completed its training user trials successfully, validating all mission parameters as set by the Indian Air Force (IAF).

BALASORE: Surface-to-air supersonic missile Akash on Friday completed its training user trials successfully, validating all mission parameters as set by the Indian Air Force (IAF).

Two rounds of the missile were fired in quick succession and both achieved 'direct-hit', destroying aerial targets.

This was last test in the five-day series conducted from Integrated Test Range (ITR) off the Odisha coast. Altogether nine missiles, picked up randomly from the production lot, were used during the trials that started on Monday.

Defence sources said two medium range nuclear capable Akash missiles were fired from the launching complex-III of ITR between 12 noon and 12.40 pm, minutes after the aerial targets were flown from the launching complex-II of the same test facility.

While the first missile successfully destroyed a fast moving aerial target at a low altitude, the second missile directly hit an unmanned aerial target 'Banshee Jet 80' nearly four kilometre away and 35 metre above sea level, proving the system's capability against subsonic cruise missile.

With this, the IAF is said to have completed the training user trial of the indigenously developed sleek missile which is proven to be the best in its class.

NEW DELHI: Citing lack of evidence, CBI has closed its probe into alleged irregularities in the award of over Rs 575-crore contract in the production of Akash missile system components by top officials of Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) to a private power company. The agency had started the probe in May last year into the allegations of violation of rules. It was alleged that senior officials of BDL awarded contract worth Rs 575.51 crore for producing self- propelled launcher (ASPL) for the missile system to be supplied to two regiments of the army. CBI sources said the inquiry was started by the agency against the then Chief Managing Director Maj Gen (retd) Ravi Khetarpal, and other senior officials including the then Executive Director, Director, General Manager and others of BDL for allegedly committing irregularities in the contract. The preliminary inquiry number PE 0352013A0004, which was handled by the Hyderabad unit of CBI, has been closed as it could not find evidence of any alleged corruption against the officers, they said. The sources said the agency had recommended "suitable action" against the officials for alleged violation of rules but there was no evidence to proceed against them in the matter. Repeated attempts to seek reaction from BDL and Tata Power did not succeed. The Akash weapon system is an all-weather air-defence missile system which can target aircraft upto 30 kilometers away, at altitudes up to 18,000 metres. The automatic system is designed to target and neutralise multiple aerial targets coming from several directions simultaneously is in operational service with the army and the air force.
