crashes in Niger

A French Mirage 2000D fighter jet used to patrol the skies over Mali crashed in neighbouring Niger due to a technical glitch, the army said.
The two crew members ejected and survived uninjured. The Mirage was flying back on Monday evening from a mission in Mali, where the French army has been fighting jihadist groups, and crashed half-way between Gao in Mali's restive north and the Niger capital Niamey, where France has a military base. "The crew was forced to eject following a technical failure," said French military spokesman Gilles Jaron. "The pilot and navigator were retrieved safe and sound." The plane, which was worth tens of millions of dollars, is one of six fighter jets being used by the French army in the region. France sent troops to Mali in January 2013 to combat Islamist groups who had seized control of much of the vast desert north of the country. Around 1,600 French troops are still engaged in operations there.

South African Air Force Plane Crash Kills 3

JOHANNESBURG — Three people were killed and two others seriously injured Tuesday when a South African air force plane crashed into mountains in the northeast of the country, police said. Police said the dead were the two pilots and a passenger. All five were found trapped inside the wreckage of the plane after it crashed in Mpumalanga province shortly after 10 am (0800 GMT). "There were five people on board, two were seriously injured and the other three died at the scene," said police spokesman Selvy Mohlala. The South African air force said the plane, a Cessna Caravan C208, was being used for training. The cause of the accident is being investigated. In 2010, seven policemen were killed in a helicopter crash in the same province.

Fourteen survive copter crash in Russia: Officials

Moscow: All 14 passengers survived a close brush with death on Monday when their helicopter crashed in the far east of Russia, a rare happy ending for a country prone to aviation disasters. The Mi-8 helicopter, which included 11 forest firefighters among its passengers, crashed near the village of Chekunda in the Khabarovsk region, the Federal Forestry Agency said. "They got in touch and said they were alive," a spokeswoman for the agency, Yulia Vasyutinskaya, said. She did not provide further details. Regional investigators had earlier reported that the helicopter had crashed and burned, and that a team of investigators was heading to the site. Deadly aviation disasters are common in Russia, often blamed on ageing aircraft and poor maintenance. Aviation experts say the Soviet- era Mi-8 has an especially poor safety record. On June 1, a Mi-8 helicopter carrying 18 people crashed into a lake in northern Russia, killing all but two of the passengers.
