Hellfire missile replacement cleared for production
By: Jen Judson   13 hours ago
the Joint Air-to-Ground Missile — has been cleared for low-rate initial production, Lockheed Martin announced June 27.

Lockheed will deliver 2,631 missiles under the LRIP contract, Col. David Warnick, the Army’s program manager for Joint Attack Munition Systems (JAMS), said in a June 27 statement to Defense News.

The Lockheed Martin-developed JAGM is ultimately slated to replace the Hellfire missile — also a Lockheed product — on all platforms that fire them. It features a new dual-mode seeker and guidance system mated to a Hellfire missile.

Its seeker combines a semi-active laser with millimeter-wave radar sensors that give it the capability to go up against stationary and moving land and maritime targets in bad weather or obscured conditions.

JAGM has completed 10 limited-user test flights over several months, leading up to the Army’s decision.

The decision comes after a 24-month engineering and manufacturing development phase program where JAGM was tested and qualified on the AH-64E Apache and the AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters.

JAGM will ultimately be qualified to fire from a wide variety of platforms including unmanned aircraft.

Initial operational capability through the Army is expected in early 2019.

While the JAGM hardware demonstrated more than 95 percent reliability in flight testing, the Army had to work through some challenges surrounding the system, including cyber vulnerability, earlier on.

They have no right to dictate how India uses them.

March 2019 Apaches and Chinooks will come.

Interesting that there hasn’t been much talk so far of ordering more Chinooks but more Apaches are being optioned. Chinook is perhaps just as much of a game changer for India, we need as many as we can get.
15 Chinooks on order with options for 7 more, no doubt those options will be exercised once deliveries begin. Same goes for Apache 22 (IAF) + 6 (IA), IAF's deal also has options for 11 more and IA's order book will eventually reach a total of 39 for sure or more. Total number of Apache eventually between IAF & IA could be 72. (15+7) 22 Chinooks is nice but easily doubling or tripling that number would be better on the long run.

Chinooks are FAR more necessary than Apaches IMHO has india already has a close enough substitute (LCH/Rudra) but the Chinook will bring a completely unique capability to India.

IAF could easily use 50-60 Chinooks. Requirements are vast, especially for the east. Second order for Apaches has already been made as you mentioned but really it should have been more Chinooks, there’s a 3 year lead time for these systems and 15 is far too few.

A New High-Speed Apache Gunship With A Pusher Prop On Its Tail

Jane’s 360 was among the first to report the details about the new helicopter development, which Boeing is presently calling the AH-64E Block 2 Compound. The gunship will feature an enlarged main wing, revised engine exhaust arrangement, large vertical tail fin, and a rear-mounted pusher propeller. The design may also feature a new, rigid rotor system, which is a standard feature on other compound helicopter designs

Apache is the main US strike helicpter since the 2nd half of the 80's and the second helicopter in the world after Mi-24 in terms of popularity. Speaking about the news, the version AH-64E Block 2 Compound will allow to increase speed up to 50% and enhance the efficiency up to 24%. The cost of the new version according to the preliminary estimates will grow up to 20%.

#IAF prepares to induct US-made Apache choppers

.

The Indian Air Force is preparing to induct US-made Apache AH-64E attack helicopters, with the first batch of four choppers arriving in the country in July, two IAF officials said on condition of anonymity on Thursday.

India had inked a $ 1.1-billion deal with the US defence giant Boeing, in September 2015 for 22 Apaches. The first batch of choppers will be based at the Pathankot air base, said one of the officials cited above. The choppers will be split into two squadrons, with the second one to be based in?Jorhat, the country’s east, he said.

The IAF currently operates Soviet-origin Mi-25 and Mi-35 helicopter gunships. Boeing is likely to deliver all the 22 helicopters through 2020, the second official said.

“With its mast mounted Longbow millimetric wave radar, the Apache will open up the tactical battlefield like never before. Besides the TOW (tube-launched, optically tracked, wire-guided) anti-tank missiles that it carries, its ability to transmit and receive the battlefield picture (from and to other weapon systems) through data-link make it a very lethal acquisition,” said Air Vice Marshal Manmohan Bahadur (retd), additional DG, Centre for Air Power Studies.

any 1 has any thing new on this ...

http://defence-blog.com/news/us-army-develops-new-engine-for-black-hawk-and-apache-helicopters.html

The US Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center’s Aviation Development Directorate (ADD) is developing a new military helicopter engine that would provide 50% more power at the same weight as the currently fielded engine.

According to Army Tech, the advanced affordable turbine engine (AATE) demonstrator program aims to develop a turboshaft engine with reduced fuel consumption and improved shaft horsepower.

This engine configuration can be fitted into the Black Hawk and Apache installation envelopes, which are also in service in the IAF, as well as current and Future Vertical Lift rotorcraft.

It is said to improve range and payload capability and increase hot and high operational capability for Apache and Black Hawk platforms.

Two cost share arrangements for the engines have been awarded to General Electric and Advanced Turbine Engine Company, a joint venture of Honeywell and Pratt & Whitney.

The AATE program culminated in 2014 with the completion of full engine system demonstrations, which included performance, durability, and sand tests.

The demonstrations significantly mitigated the risks involved with transitioning advanced turboshaft engine technology to a planned program of record, known as the Improved Turbine Engine Program, the US Army said in a statement.

The difference 2500 hellfire missile made to the cost is note worthy...

Ours was 1.1 billion $ deal, wasn’t it?

Is Apache a stop gap arrangement until lch arrived? Or isn't lch with helina enough for enemy's tanks or armour formations? Though Apache is a great toy to be possessed.
