Hawk-eyed team to ensure security at Aero India

Do you want to have a hair-raising experience with air fighters at Aero India 2011, but worried about your safety at the high-profile event? Don't fret as the Indian Air Force is taking no chances on the security front for the event at Yelahanka from February 9 to 13.

In the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks and small ones in Bangalore, the defence ministry will deploy 400 to 500 personnel armed with automatic weapons, apart from weaponized aircraft and missiles which will be in readiness mode.

COMMANDO TEAMS

Security measures for both air and ground-based emergencies will be in place. Apart from civil police, commando teams will be deployed. Discussions are on to have DSC-CISF commandos, air force commandos and army commandos who will form a three-tier ring on the ground. They will be all over the campus and at vantage points too. They will cover areas from entrance to the runway, exhibition areas and air-display viewing areas. Plans are also afoot to deploy a stand-by para-regiment commando team.

SHOULDER MISSILES

The IAF may also deploy shoulder missiles at key places to tackle air-borne attacks. Weaponized aircraft, radars and other air defence measures are on stand-by too. A top defence official said: "We are prepared to handle terror attacks from any side, including aerial ones. All air defence measures will be in place."

Commandos apart, sniffer dogs, bomb disposal squads and spotters will be deployed. "Spotters will look for unwanted elements. They're like the intelligence. They'll be everywhere but obviously not conspicuous," the official said. A security and administrative control centre will monitor operations in and around the air base.

The last time visited it in 2003 and 06 there was no entry fees for the Exhibits! Now people claim there is a hefty fee for entry into the exhibit area?

Does anyone know if i can go there and buy the tickets for the Exhibit the same day or should i book in advance?

PLEASE HURRY, I HAVE TO ASK MY FRIEND TO BUY THE TICKETS IF SO.

Answer questions and fly an advanced fighter jet

A Swedish defence firm has brought to Indian combat aircraft lovers an opportunity to fly one of the world's most advanced multi-role fighter jet after answering some questions posted on the company's website.

The winner will be flown in SAAB's most advanced multi-role fighter aircraft, the Gripen, during the Feb 9-13 Aero India air show in Bangalore.

All a contestant needs to do is simply answer a set of questions or fly any flight simulation of the Gripen at www.gripentopgun.com, a company statement said.

'The Gripen Top Guns contest has an amateur and professional level challenge to test the knowledge of aircraft buffs while providing an opportunity to enter their best flying effort on the Gripen and take a shot at flying the real Gripen,' the statement said.

'The Gripen game entries will be judged by top Swedish and Indian pilots to select a few who will get a shot at flying the real Gripen aircraft simulator. Out of the five chosen simulator pilots, one will get to fly the real thing: the JAS 39 Gripen.'

To top it, for those not really interested in the technical end but love the look and feel of the aircraft, the Gripen Top Guns contest opens a Model Hunt in which 12 participants will make it to the first ever Gripen India calendar.

Three Gripen aircraft will be arriving in Bangalore for the air show.

'We believe that more the people of India get to see and understand the complex technologies that make flying and guarding the skies both simple and effective, the more will be the appreciation of the history of Swedish aircraft technology and Swedish technologies,' Edvard de la Motte, campaign director, Gripen International India said in the statement.

Apart from the grand prize of a flight in the Gripen, the contest has a host of prizes for those who get it right and win in the draw of lots, including Gripen fighter pilot flying suits, Gripen aviator glasses, Gripen exclusive calendars signed by Swedish test pilots as well as Gripen goodies, including Gripen key tags, badges, stickers and pens.

IAF Sukhoi Fleet to be Equipped with Homemade Nirbhay Missiles
India Defence Online, New Delhi — India's 'Nirbhay' cruise missile is slated to be incorporated in the Suhkoi Su-30MKI Flanker strike aircraft, increasing the nuclear weapon capability of the Indian Air Force (IAF) beyond that of free-fall weapons only. The 'Nirbhay' will be the third indigenous weapon to equip the Su-30MKI besides the 'Brahmos' supersonic cruise missile and the 'Astra' medium-range air-to-air missile.

The induction of the 'Nirbhay' cruise missile to the Suu-MKI Flanker aircraft will give the decisive edge the IAF needs in terms of long-range and strategic strike capability.

According to sources, the range of the 'Nirbhay' cruise missile is roughly 800 to 1,000 kilometres. Hyderabad-based Advanced Systems Laboratory, part of state-owned Defence Research and Development Organization's (DRDO) is currently pursuing the 'Nirbhay' project. Sources added that a design model of the 'Nirbhay' is expected to be unveiled at Aero-India 2011.

Sources also added that the approximate size of the 'Nirbhay' cruise missile is about 19 feet, which implies that only a couple of these missiles can be accommodated in the Su-MKI aircraft. It has been suggested that the aircraft could carry one weapon on a pylon in the tunnel between the two engine bays, similar to the measure taken for the 'Brahmos' missile. Two 'Nirbhay' missiles can be accommodated if one could fit under each of the inboard wing-station.

The details of the 'Nirbhay' cruise missile have been kept under wraps by India. The subsonic Nirbhay weighs 1,000 kg with a 1,000 km range and a speed of 0.7 mach. The requirement for 'Nirbhay' was anticipated by India's three armed forces. The 'Nirbhay' is to have multiple platforms and can be launched from ground, sea and air.

It has been disclosed that the overall design and aerodynamic study work and the design of the propulsion system has been finished. DRDO's Pune-based Research and Development Establishment (Engineering) is developing the transporter erector launch vehicle for the ground-launched version of the 'Nirbhay' missile.

ASL, the lab which is designing the 'Nirbhay' cruise missile indicated that it will be superior to the 'Babur' missile which belongs to Pakistan. Pakistan's 'Babur' msissile is the first subsonic, low-level terrain-mapping missile and was developed originally with a 500 kilometres range and later upgraded to 700 kilometres.

Airbus to pitch refueler at Aero India

European aerospace major, Airbus will show off a model of its A330 MRTT at Aero India 2011 in Bangalore next month.

Airbus has pitched the aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF) competition for six mid-air refueling aircraft, in which it is likely to be competing with the Russian IL-78. This is the second time the IAF running this tender, after its selection of the MRTT was rejected last year because the Indian Finance Ministry considered the aircraft too expensive, especially considering that the IAF already flies the Russian aircraft.

Airbus is also hoping to win the United States Air Force (USAF) KC-X tender program for 179 refueling aircraft, in which it is competing with Boeing.

Airbus Military will also exhibit a model of its C295 twin-turboprop military transport aircraft, which it says is 'able to carry up to nine tonnes of cargo, land on unprepared airstrips, and perform the widest range of missions ranging for anti-submarine warfare to maritime and border surveillance and any kind of humanitarian aid'.

Nirbhay mock-up might be at AeroIndia this year! Personally, that is what I care about seeing the most, even more than F-35 simulator.

And not to mention LCA!

MBDA to display missiles for Indian Armed Forces at Aero India 2011

MBDA is bringing in missile power at the Aero India 2011. Proposed in the frame of Mirage 2000 upgrade program, MICA air-to-air missile will also be displayed on MBDA stall. MICA is the only missile in the world featuring two interoperable seekers (active radar and imaging infrared) to cover the spectrum from close-in dogfight to long beyond visual range. It is sometimes referred to as the silent interceptor as it is extremely hard to defend against.

For the Indian Air Force MMRCA missile solutions, MBDA is displaying Meteor, Dual Mode Brimstone, Taurus KEPD 350 and SCALP/Storm Shadow. MBDA is offering them for the three European aircraft options lined up for the IAF's MMRCA competition, Rafale, Eurofighter Typhoon and Gripen.

MBDA says that Meteor, if procured, the IAF will benefit from a performance that will ensure launch aircraft survivability while minimising missile usage and, therefore, whole life cost.

The Dual Mode Brimstone is MBDA's most recent developments and a key UK RAF weapon currently being deployed operationally in theatre in conditions not dissimilar to those that the IAF would most likely have to operate in. DMB is the only weapon currently available that can engage fast moving land and sea targets with high precision. Capable of engaging a wide variety of target types and operating safely and effectively in the complex littoral area, DMB offers a major operational advantage in being able to deal with the swarming FIAC (Fast Inshore Attack Craft) threats. The Eurofighter Typhoon equipped with DMB has a distinct advantage over helicopters as it can rapidly confront a threat which could be engaged asymmetrically optimising the effectiveness. Significantly, DMB has been used with the Litening pod designator which is already in service with the IAF.

As for Deep Strike operations, MBDA has two cruise missiles to offer for the MMRCA programme. Taurus KEPD 350 for the Eurofighter Typhoon and Gripen and SCALP/Storm Shadow for the Rafale. Both weapon systems are in service and have proven their unerring and unmatched ability to fulfil and indeed exceed the requirements stipulated by the IAF in terms of range, target effect and CEP (Circular Error Probable).

For ALH DHRUV and LCH helicopters, MBDA is offering PARS 3. This fire and forget system developed for Germany's Tiger helicopter is capable of targeting and defeating a wide range of mobile and stationary ground targets from latest generation armour-protected vehicles to bunkers with pinpoint accuracy. For pilot safety, the missiles, once launched, navigate autonomously to their respective targets without requiring further input from the gunner thereby allowing the helicopter to quit its position should there be a danger. Pars 3 on the Tiger features a four-missile launcher. However, India prefers a twin variant and in this respect MBDA has been sourcing an Indian defence industry partner to develop this alternative design. India has asked for trials of the system. With these trials due soon, Aero India will be an important shop window for this system.

For MRH HELICOPTER, MBDA is offering MARTE ER. Marte ER has already been integrated and qualified on the medium-range NH90 helicopter. Marte ER adds a turbo-engine motor that takes the missile's range out to over 100km. With India actively looking for a MRH (medium range helicopter) capabilities, Marte ER should be a major talking point during the show.

MBDA is also offering ASRAAM for JAGUAR Upgrade. The Jaguars of the IAF are undergoing upgrades to extend their life through to the end of the decade. An important part of this upgrade will depend on the choice of self-protection air-to-air missiles to replace the currently deployed R550 Magic. There is space for only one such weapon on the Jaguar's overwing station and MBDA's ASRAAM (already in service with the UK and Australian air forces) would provide an optimum solution given its ability to provide short to medium range protection passively. Overwing pylons call for quick missile separation to avoid contact with the aircraft's wing. ASRAAM is the fastest, lowest drag SRAAM weapon on the market. This speed not only provides safe separation, it also guarantees "first shot first kill" to avoid getting involved in a dogfight. As the Jaguar is a low-flying aircraft, a threat could well come from a higher altitude. ASRAAM again offers a major advantage here in its unmatched "snap-up" capability, the missile's ability to rapidly divert upwards once fired.

MBDA will also be promoting its Fire Shadow loitering munitions, the family of Exocet anti-ship weapons as well as Europe's most significant anti-air defence missile development, namely Aster. Similarly the Milan anti-armour weapon (produced by BDL) will be on display as evidence of over 30 years of industrial partnership between MBDA and India.

Of course there's no "NG" machines to bring there but I guess we can see a couple of Ceasar and David's + Demon if she's ready to go.

(but she's probably not)

Saab to bring Gripen trio to Aero India
January 9, 2011
By Saurabh Joshi

Swedish defense major Saab is planning to get three Gripen NG aircraft to Aero India, the air show in Bangalore due to be held next month. Inderjit Sial, head of Saab in India told StratPost that while two of the aircraft would conduct flight displays, the third would be on static display. The aircraft is in the race to win the Indian Air Force (IAF) tender for 126 Medium Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA).

The company is also flying in two other aircraft, the Saab 2000, which it is pitching in response to the Indian Navy's Request for Information (RFI) for Medium Range Maritime Reconnaissance (MRMR) aircraft, as well as the Saab 340, a 34-seater aircraft in which the company hopes to interest the Indian Coast Guard in association with the Indian company, Punj Lloyd. The Coast Guard is expected to lease a total of 12 aircraft for maritime patrol.

Saab will also display its RBS-15 Anti-Ship Missile and its Giraffe MB radar which it hopes to offer the Indian Navy as part of a network of coastal defense batteries, as well as its RBS-70 MANPADS missile system and HARD radar, which it is pitching to the Indian armed forces.

Besides this, the company will show off its Head Up Display (HUD) built in association with Samtel for light helicopters and aircraft, which will allow operations in weather conditions that require CAT III facilities.

Meteor Moves Forward

France's decision to go ahead and place a production order for the Meteor ramjet-powered air-to-air missile leaves the Eurofighter consortium waiting for its government backers to do the same.

The Meteor commitments are seen as a potential boost in several export campaigns.

Sweden, last year, was the first to move, with FMV placing a production order. Sweden and the Gripen already have a leg up on rivals, since the Swedish fighter is the test platform for Meteor. The missile is to be fully integrated on Gripen in 2013 and to be operational in 2015.

France does not expect to receive the first of its 200 Meteors until 2018. That is later than expected and a reflection of the severe budget pressures the defense ministry is under. But from an export perspective, the commitment now is probably more important than reality.

For Eurofighter, getting a similar commitment also is on the agenda, but the protracted talks with the core government buyers -- the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Spain -- leave the group trailing. Industry officials hope to get their buyers on-board this year.
