Documents reviewed by HT show DataWind founders and NRI brothers Suneet and Raja Singh Tuli may have procured these devices off-the-shelf from manufacturers in China for $42 ( Rs. 2,263 then), exactly the price at which they sold these to the Indian government.

DataWind bought more than 10,000 or more "A 13" made-in-China tablets from at least four manufacturers in Shenzhen and Hong Kong between October 26 and November 7.

These were shipped to India duty-free as they were meant for school students under an HRD ministry programme.

Last year, Canada-based DataWind won a bid to supply 100,000 low-cost computing devices to students. Aakash 2, which is meant to be India-made, is part of that agreement.

DataWind had no role either in the design or manufacturing of Aakash 2 tablets, a source said.

Suneet Singh Tuli, CEO of DataWind however insisted that the current Aakash 2 is designed by his firm.

"For the first 10,000 units for IIT, and for expediency sake we had the motherboards manufactured in one of our Chinese subcontractor's facilities And then the units have been 'kitted' in China at various manufacturers for expediency, whereas the final assembly and programming has happened in India. We finished this batch of 10,000 units and delivered them to IIT and will be starting another batch of 20,000 units for them in two weeks," Tuli said in an e-mail response to HT.

DataWind's manufacturing partner in Hyderabad --- VMC Systems---had not built any device over the last couple of months, said a source. Its manufacturing partners and facilities in Delhi and Amritsar, respectively, too, had not produced even a single tablet over the last couple of months, the source said.

"Instead of manufacturing these low-cost tablets themselves"¦ DataWind has simply purchased these 'off-the-shelf' from China and supplied it to the Indian government," the source told HT, requesting not to be identified.

Conned: Aakash 2 made in China?:hail::hail:

These, it emerges, were subsequently unveiled as Aakash 2 on November 11. IIT-B did not respond to an emailed questionnaire.

A smart way to avoid import tax, I am wondering how Chinese manufacturer make any money on it?

Uh?? Sorry to burst all the premature superciliousness here, but here's an official rebuttal from Datawind Corp:

Aakash not Chinese import: DataWind

(AFP) – 1 day ago

NEW DELHI — Makers of India's low-cost Aakash tablet on Saturday denied a local media report that said the computer was a cheap Chinese import and not an Indian innovation as was claimed.

DataWind, a British-based company with major operations in Canada and India, said the allegations in the Hindustan Times newspaper that the company had "conned" India with the computer were "inaccurate and misleading".

Early this month India launched the Aaakash 2, a new version of what is dubbed the world's cheapest computer -- for sale to students at a subsidised price of $20 -- with a quicker processor and an improved battery.

DataWind chief executive Suneet Singh Tuli said in a statement the company's business model was similar to that of technology giant Apple "where we use subcontract manufacturers to build our products".

"The software and mechanical parts (of Aakash 2 tablets) are all developed by us," Tuli said in the statement.

The Hindustan Times said the company may have procured these devices off-the-shelf from manufacturers in China and alleged that it had "no role either in the design or manufacturing of Aakash 2 tablets".

Tuli said for the first 10,000 units, the motherboards and kits were manufactured in its Chinese subcontractor's facilities "for expediency" but the final assembly and programming for these first 10,000 units was done in India.

"This was well discussed and we got approval prior to shipping," he said.

The Aakash tablet is seen as helping end India's "digital divide" and is aimed at making computing technology available to students in a country where only one in 10 people use the Internet. Aakash means sky in Hindi.

The paperback-book-sized Aakash 2 has a screen measuring seven inches (18 centimetres) and runs on Google's Android operating system.

The Aakash has been hailed a major success for India, which is also famous for producing the Tata Nano -- the world's cheapest car, priced at about $2,500.

This piece of info was present in the earlier article too

PR talk. Would it be manufactured in India or not ?

"The software and mechanical parts (of Aakash 2 tablets) are all developed by us," Tuli said in the statement.
The Operating System is Android which is freely available. What "mechanical parts" does he refer to when he's "subcontracting manufacturing" ?

Tuli said for the first 10,000 units, the motherboards and kits were manufactured in its Chinese subcontractor's facilities "for expediency" but the final assembly and programming for these first 10,000 units was done in India.
Wow, so India is simply assembling them ? What about the next batch of kits ? Will we be assembling them or will we manufacture them ?

Highly disappointing.

@LurkerBaba,

From the article, it seems like only the first 10,000 units were partially manufactured in China for the purpose of 'expeditiousness'.

It seems also that the reason for this is because Datawind had a fallout with its domestic partner, Quad Electronics, in Andhra Pradesh and had to rope in another firm, VMC:- which was still installing and ramping up capacity at the time the batch was due.

There is nothing wrong with the tablet being made in china, they are telling that it is entirely made in India but getting it done by someone in China.

Iphone mentions "Designed in california, assembled in china".

As we all know chinis hardware is cheapest in the world even all 90% electronic manufactures around the world uses them.

They have to pick few Chinese components to reduce cost. Ab 35$ me sardar ki jaan loge kya

true I-phone are designed in ammerika and assembled in china but did anybody create controversy that i phone is chinis??

great way of making a point without even a word

only improvement i can suggest is that instead of the icon showing the "components secured globally" showing the western hemisphere it should be showing the eastern hemisphere , especially the china region ? .....perhaps that might improve the accuracy of the situation , even for akash-2 model of year 2013
