What terrible destruction and mayhem! Unlike the Western theater, the Eastern theater of WWII doesn't get so much attention and thus, while I was vaguely aware of Japanese atrocities in East Asia, the videos and images of those events present the entire sordid story in its full and graphic detail. The Japanese got away too lightly for their crimes, and the Emperor Hirohito went completely scot free!

Did you see the documentary? The Japanese aim was to conquer all of Asia and eventually all of the world committing the same atrocities they inflicted on the Chinese.

Although what view we hold is unfortunately related to what events affected us more-the Chinese have emotional scars left over by the humiliation at the hands of the Japanese. Indians were thankfully spared from that and hence cannot relate to terrors that were committed by people in far away lands. However Indians still remember the 1962 defeat at the hands of China and the subsequent Chinese collusion with Pakistan.

All a matter of one's historical circumstance and perspective.

He thought (probably correctly) that the Japs need the Emperor to keep Japan together and ensure stability.

Hitler, Himmler, Goering and Goebbels committed suicide and Germany was in ruins at the end of the war due to Hitler's refusal to surrender. Germany was occupied for 4 years by the Allies and the Russians after the war in which they had their own interrogation camps. In these camps, military intelligence officials from these countries treated prisoners without any regard for law or human rights. The Russians committed thousands of rapes in the territory they occupied. At least the victims of German crimes can say they were avenged for their suffering.

If you compare that to Japan, the IMT convicted only 28 major Japanese officials of the most serious crimes. The scale of the punishment doled out to the two countries is just incomparable.

True , ironically Wernher Con Braun, the architect of the terrifying V-2 missile that wreaked havoc on London, went on to work for USA in designing their Saturn-V rocket for the Apollo series...
