CCS nod for 4 more stealth destroyers

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/CCS-nod-for-4-more-stealth-destroyers/articleshow/7085980.cms

NEW DELHI: The government has cleared another major programme, 'Project-15B', to indigenously construct four guided-missile stealth destroyers for around Rs 30,000-crore at Mazagon Docks.

In its quest to become a powerful three-dimensional blue-water force and maintain a fleet of around 140 "surface and sub-surface combatants", the Navy already has 30 warships and six submarines on order in various Indian shipyards.

Moreover, it has an aircraft carrier, Admiral Gorshkov or INS Vikramditya, three additional Talwar-class stealth frigates in Russia, as also two fleet tankers in Italy under construction.

Project-15B, which will be undertaken at MDL after the three Kolkata-class 6,700-tonne destroyers already being constructed there under a long-delayed Rs 11,662-crore project are finally delivered in 2012-2014, is understood to have been cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Security on Wednesday evening. It was earlier cleared by the Defence Acquisitions Council, chaired by defence minister A K Antony, in July.

the first 3 p-15 destroyers cost around 11000 crores but how come the next 4 costs 30000crores?
also if the navy wants to compete with PLAN(which alreay has double the no. of ships we have curently) why does it give liliput orders for these ships-they must give atleast 15-16 destroyers each time to the shipyards rather than 3 and 4 each time.

P-15B is more advanced and more stealthy than 15A. They started 15A in 2003 so you must consider the inflation.
We dont have the capacity to build 15 destroyers in same time and also the technologies are improving at faster rate than our production rate so we cant order more numbers of the same class. We should have started 15B by now but the delay in 15A is dragging the starting date. They will start 15B only after the launch of all 15A.

we do have the capacity to build 15-16 destroyers each time if the private shipyars are taken into consideration and the goverment shipyards are upgraded for modular construction of global standards.project 15a started in 2003,at that time cost of 4 destroyers would have been around 15k crores-now how come by inflation the cost has risen to 200% since production line is already open in MDL(even if we consider p-15b is technologically superior)

You cant have all shipyards building destroyers alone and we dont need 15 destroyers of same class. I read somewhere that this cost estimation of project 15B includes the upgradation of MDL to modular shipbuilding. Only the Hull is same and all the other things such as superstructure and weapons are different in 15B.

the pace of developement of ships and submarines in public-shipyard like mdl and grse is really pathetic.we need to modernize these shipyard to enable them of modular construction and also allow private shipyards to join them.

USN canceled the Zumwalt programme in 2008 as costs spiraled out of control. The two ships that got their funding will be built but only used as testbeds for future designs. Perfect example of what not to do.

The US is building three Zumwalt Class Stealth Destroyers and I believe something like 22 Flight III DDG-51's.

The MRSAM missiles are scheduled to equip the three Kolkata class (Project 15A) guided missile destroyers currently under construction at the Mazagon shipyards in India. These vessels will be delivered to the Indian Navy in 2012 and their Barak-8 systems are expected to become operational a year later in 2013. Four additional Kolkata class destroyers (Project15B) will be equipped with an extended range version of the missile (ER-SAM) capable of intercepting targets at a range of 100 km.
These destroyers will also carry the Brahmos II supersonic and new Nirbhany subsonic cruise missiles with offensive reach of 1,000 km.

RAFAEL Advanced Defense Systems Ltd's C-PEARL-M ESM system on Project 15 & 17

The day-at-sea organised by the Indian Navy's (IN) Western Naval Command on November 14 provided some additional insights into the force modernisation activities of the IN. For instance, most of the frontline warships and fleet-support vessels are now being refrofitted with RAFAEL Advanced Defense Systems Ltd's C-PEARL-M ESM system, which enables the automatic detection, data measurement and identification of threats. The C-PEARL-M system is known as SANKET. Other items being refrofitted include the RUKMINI SATCOMS-suite, which is imported directly from Israel's ORBIT Communication Systems, Ltd through its Indian agent Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL); and Consilium Selux X-band navigation radars and ECDIS (electronic navigation chart display) systems supplied by Consilium AB of Sweden. All this will also go on board the three Project 15A guided-missile destroyers (DDG), four Project 15B DDGs, and the seven projected Project 17A guided-missile frigates.

As far as AEW operations go, the present practice calls for one Ka-31 to be stationed 96km ahead of an aircraft carrier-based battle group, with all AEW-related data being relayed by a secure data-link (known as Link-S) to the aircraft carrier's combat information centre (CIC), and not directly to the MiG-29Ks or Sea Harriers. In future, depending on availability of the GSAT-7 satellite (which will be the IN's first dedicated fleet satellite communications satellite, expected to be launched next year), both the existing ship-to-ship Link-2 and Link-S data-links will be making use of SATCOMS channels for two-way relay of data and communications. The GSAT-7 (INSAT-4F) will be a multi-band satellite carrying payloads in UHF, S-band, C-band and Ku-band. The satellite will weigh 2,330kg with a payload power of 2,000W. The follow-on GSAT-7A will be an IAF-specific communications satellite.—Prasun K. Sengupta
