MoD had given nod for IA's own Apaches - 39 of them. However, there's been no news for it for longtime.
That's what I'm saying, as of now, Apache is for IAF and LCH is for IA. Can't say about the future though.

In a bid to strengthen country's defence forces, the Defence Ministry has issued an order worth Rs 22,000 crores for purchase of CH-47 Chinook and AH-64 Apachehelicopters which will be inducted in the forces soon.

"The ministry has already issued an order for purchase of 15 Chinook and 21 Apache helicopters, which will soon be inducted in the forces," Defence Minister Manohar Parrikartold reporters here today.

The minister said that the order, totalling Rs 22,000 crores, has been placed for the purchase of these choppers, which will strengthen the capabilities of country's defence forces.

To a query regarding the upcoming Union Budget, Parrikar said the Centre has decided to allocate adequate funds for the defence sector.

"There are two elements for the budget, one is expenditure and another salaries. And on both fronts, the government has decided to give enough (funds)," he said.

Parrikar said that the ministry has no constraint with regard to defence capital.

"We are fulfilling the orders which were given 10 to 5 years back. Finances for the same is already reserved," he said.

Parrikar noted with pride that in his 16 months tenure, not a single question has been raised on the defence purchase front.

"...This itself indicates that I don't fall for the pressures," he said.

Parrikar also said that with the Defence ministry giving the nod to export 'Brahmos' and 'Akash' missiles, Indian forces will get a boost.

Claiming that neighbour Pakistan is wary of India's defence powers, Parrikar said during a recent exhibition that Pakistan withdrew display of its JF-17 Fighter jets when India's 'Tejas' (Light Combat Aircraft) was showcased.

Batch of 43 aviators pass out of aviation school in Nashik

Marching to the tune of the artillery band on a warm summer morning at the air strip of the Combat Army Aviation School (CAATS) in Gandhinagar, Nashik, 43 officers from various arms of the Indian army expressed confidence and eagerness to take on the role and responsibility of army aviators (pilots) last Saturday.

The officers were presented their ‘wings’ that now identify them as aviators by Lt General P R Kumar, PVSM, AVSM,VSM, Director General military Operations, Col Commandant Regiment of Artillery and Army Aviation Corps, who was the chief guest at the function. The moment of pride and glory for the officers was also shared by their families and trainers at CAATS.

CAATS in Nashik is the only institute that trains helicopter pilots for the army. The arduous 13 month training begins with the pre army pilot course and then the student officers proceed to the Helicopter Training School in Amroli, ArmyTraining School in Jhansi, Rotary Wings Academy in Bangalore and then come back to Nashik to be trained on aviation aspects.

Addressing the young aviators, Lt Gen PR Kumar praised the CAATS which is being recognised as a premium institution and said that army aviation holds a place of pride in the army.

Giving a word of advice to the aviators Lt Gen PR Kumar said, “This is just the start. There are more miles and more hours to fly. The environment is very demanding. We are a country always in battle situations with an active LAC (Line of Actual Control) and LOC (Line of Control), dealing with counter insurgency, counter terrorism and combat management. Your involvement in such situations is a crucial mission at strategic level.”

Stating that aviators are a potential threat to the enemy and hence will be targeted, he asked the aviators to train to succeed. At the same time the Lt Gen sent a word of caution saying, “The aviators attitude must be focused on flight safety and mission achievement.” He added, “Serve with passion and dedication but also enjoy your flying. You have to be the all rounded personality. Take your job seriously but also have time to smell the roses,” Kumar said.

The passing out parade ended with a breath taking display of the helicopters, the aviators and the soldiers who demonstrated capabilities of the man and the machine. Operations like small team insertion and extrication (STIE), slithering, rescue, winching, etc. were demonstrated giving a glimpse of the might, courage, and the efficacy of the aviators and the helicopters. Lancer, Chetak, Cheetah and Dhruv helicopters participated in the demonstrations.
