Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani’s statement in Parliament on Mahishasura may not have gone down well with the indigenous communities of West Bengal, who consider Mahishasura their “greatest hero” rather than Goddess Durga.

While the chief of the Santhal Samaj of Bengal, Nityananda Hembram, said it may affect the Bharatiya Janata Party “negatively” in the coming Assembly elections, anthropologist Pashupati Prasad Mahato has asked the Minister to “check history” to find out about the role of the Asura to protect the country from the Aryans. Santhals constitute more than 50 per cent of West Bengal’s tribal population.

Mr. Hembram, 80, alumnus of the IIT, Kharagpur, who retired as Chief Architect in the Defence Ministry, is the present majhi [head] of the Santhals. He told The Hindu that Mahishasura was a supremely revered figure among the tribal people of West Bengal, parts of Odisha and Jharkhand.

“He was not a mythical character but an historical icon who resisted the outsiders, the Aryans, before the birth of Christ. When he defeated the Aryans repeatedly, then a woman was sent [by the Aryans] to deceive him and thus society was defeated. Otherwise, eastern India, including Bengal, was under the control of indigenous societies and was called Bongadisum,” Mr. Hembram said. He said Ms. Irani’s comment was “condemnable” and it would “negatively affect” the BJP in the coming election.

The BJP did well in some of the tribal pockets of Bengal in the 2014 Lok Sabha election. In West Medinipur in south Bengal, the BJP was ahead of others in one Assembly segment and did reasonably well in the district. Undivided Medinipur, a former bastion of the Left, had nearly 20 per cent tribal population. In Bankura, with nearly 10 per cent tribal population, the BJP had scored around 20 per cent in all the 12 seats, emerging as a significant force. In north Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district, which has nearly 15 per cent tribal population, the BJP got more than 30 per cent vote in more than one seat. In all these seats, the BJP could do well in the Assembly election, provided “both Mahishasura and Durga worshippers” stay with them, observers said.

gentlemen, this issue now i can say with conviction has seriously rattled the wh0rehouses and infused some prana in those whom we call 'fence sitters' or simply the disinterested ones! you could see my absence from the 'SM watch thread' since a month or so, for i hadn't logged in to FB (am not a teetar yet) to check updates, but did that just now, and am in wonderful awe and amazement to find even those among my friends whom i used to consider/categorise as 'terribly inert' regarding national and geo-political issues, even they are sharing and writing about this damned blasphemy! so as i have written earlier too, these events which are unfolding are not bad in hindsight. am really very pleasantly amazed, to put it mildly!

Actually there is a prophecy in the communist handbook which deals with that final bit. It says that once the number of communists in any society become more than 70% they can undertake a violent class struggle to systematically exterminate all the people who resisted them. Unfortunately this is not without precedence as it has happened twice. First in Russia (Bolsheviks) and then in China (Mao). First people make a list of demands, then they build a community around that list, as the community grows, political parties have to heed those demands. Did you attended the Niqah of Suhasini or Vivah of Saman Habib in order to ascertain their conversion. The point is that they marry to a person outside of their religion.

West Bengal: Fresh violence in Burdwan university

Fresh violence erupted in Burdwan University on Friday, after students — protesting under the banner of Left-backed SFI — were allegedly attacked by the non-teaching staff of the varsity. The attackers, who also allegedly included members of Trinamool Congress Chatra Parishad, were reportedly led by local ruling party leader Sitaram Mukherjee.

Two SFI activists were hospitalised following the scuffle. An attending doctor of Burdwan Medical College and Hospital said their condition was stable.

The SFI and district CPM leadership claimed at least 15 members were injured in the unprovoked assault by the members of Siksha Bandhu Samity and “some outsiders”, as the students were on a fast before the administrative building in the campus.

Trinamool, however, denied its involvement. Police said no official complaint has been lodged by any side as yet.

Three days ago, SFI members, protesting the publication of erroneous results, had allegedly ransacked the university premises, prompting police lathicharge. Two Left members — Sheikh Naseem Ahmed and Sheikh Feroz — were arrested on Thursday for allegedly damaging university property.

“The attack was orchestrated by the local Trinamool student leadership, backed by the ruling party. It was an attack on students... It was done with the knowledge of the administration and even girls were not spared. The local TMC leader has been caught on camera...,” said an SFI spokesperson.
