This is wrong time for US to entangle with China when they are fighting a proxy war in Ukraine. What US (Biden) thought easy access to Russia via Ukraine, instead turned out to be a total loss of power equation. Already dual crisis of energy and food in unfolding in Europe and rest of the world. This crisis is not going to go anytime sooner.

Already an ineffective, clueless, mumbling president leads the US. His (Biden) poorly thought about policy has disturbed balance in Europe. On top of that entangling with China over Taiwan is a bad move by any account. Who knows China may score a victory over US in this tussle. It will be bad for the world balance.

There were other ways to put the Chinese in its place. Their main source of power and money is cheap exports. Much of the Chinese consumer goods exports are directed towards US and Europe. If you are smart enough then deny these markets to China. Once US and Europe start cutting back on Chinese imports the message will be driven home. Chinese would understand that very clearly. This change of policy will work better than military confrontation, but who knows what the Chinese want.

If a point is to be made about military supremacy in the Indo-Pacific then concentrate a much bigger military force than a weakling of 4 war ships ordered against many more Chinese ships in the Taiwan Straits. Send four aircraft carriers and ancillary ships and reinforce Guam and other bases. Tell the Chinese that if they shoot then US will shoot back with greater force and force the Chinese away. That also Chinese would understand real good.

The timing of war in Europe and confrontation with China is bad. first, finish dealing with Russia and then deal with China.

If China has to take something, it won't settle just for the islands. Taking these islands will harden western resolve. Sanctions will follow, China's domestic situation already getting precarious. It will hit hard. Chinese economy is very much intertwined with the West unlike Russia's. A double edged sword. Cost benefit ratio is very unfavorable for China.
So if indeed China is ready for war, it will try to take whole Taiwan for a possible fait accompli, and then manage the fallout. Going for the low hanging fruits like some islands is too much effort for very little to no reward. Imo.
