So when you worked in the military hospitals, did you had to get any Security Clearance or face any kind of backlash of dual loyality..due to your Indian ties ? My parent lived in the states through the 80's both India/US were different places in terms of ideology..In India, it was Indira Gandhi's pseudo Socialism under the garb of Democracy while in the States it Reagon's Capitalism...It was very early 1970's there was a strong hippie culture in US . India I think at that time
was regarded as a cool place by the younger generation. More racism was experienced when i
got to the big city and higher education and believe it or not in the US military and working
in a military hospital. But I am semi retiired and move between a big city (NYC) and the same small town
in upstate NY.
The first requirement was I had to be a citizenSo when you worked in the military hospitals, did you had to get any Security Clearance or face any kind of backlash of dual loyality..due to your Indian ties ? Well was born in the US too although grew in India in the 90s/2000s before I came back to US for college. I was gonna join Airforce ROTC since they were promising full ride in return for 4 years service. But seeing the Iraq war casualties during the Surge of 2007/2008 I decided not to. Should have joined although I did work on Submarines as a Civilian for the Navy my clearances took long time...The first requirement was I had to be a citizen
For the hospital I worked . I was a second generation indian I had been in USA almost my
Whole life but I was born in india. You can join army without being a citizen but you most likely will not be high ranking or move up to higher ranks..
Almost anyone who works in a government facility with classified documents will require a security clearance. There are different types of security clearance , three I believe. Everyone in the military has the most basic. It is renewed every 15 years. I had renewed my clearance once before I left and went into civilian life.
clearance always take time. ROTC is a great program , I see only a few Indian Americans taking that road. But there is a commitment you are making that you will have to fulfill. At times I wonder how things would have been if I didn’t take this road. You are in limbo when you leave and it’s really not for anyone who wants to make a lot of money. A good friend of mine was in the navy and he always talked about how he use sleep near a nuclear warhead in a Ohio subWell was born in the US too although grew in India in the 90s/2000s before I came back to US for college. I never worked in Ohio sub, only LA Class Attack as the newly built Virginia Class ones. I worked on Non-Nuclear Systems. I think there were few takers from Indian Americans in military and law enforcement hence less representation but now more and more are joining in. Yes its not for someone who wants to make tons of money ..but its recession proof. There are no mass layoff from Defence Contractors since the contracts are long term and some times you do get lucky to work on very advance technology. But due to clearance, its very invasive on your personal life; you cant just leave the country with out letting the government know.clearance always take time. turned him Into a hypochondriac.
Yes it is claustrophobic..lol. The submarines I worked on are Los Angeles Class Attack Subs, which are nuclear powered. Most of the stuff of the Submarine is in public domain except Nuclear Propulsion Systems, on tech these are 30-40 years old submarines which are due to get decommisioned soon. The movie "The Hunt for Red October" will give you the glimpse of what's it like inside LA Class Submarine. The new Virginia Class Subs are very high tech though with features like Fly-By-Wire etc.Without breaking any rules or laws or disclosing national security secrets, what is your general opinion of the USN and the submarines you work on? Is it really cutting edge like on the forefront such as star trek or is it more of a really more refined approach?
What are the amenities like aboard the sub? Is it really claustrophobic?
Why can't India just kick some of these ba*ta*ds out?We need to find a way to take NY Times down.
