Thousands of Muslims protest China's plans to demolish mosque

Religious groups have seen their freedoms reduced as government makes faithful pledge allegiance to officially atheist Communist Party.

Thousands of ethnic Hui Muslims gathered at a mosque in northwestern China to protest its planned demolition in a rare demonstration against the government.

It would be forcibly demolished on Friday, they added in the note, which was widely circulated among Chinese Muslims on social media.

The protest on Friday comes as faith groups, which were largely tolerated in the past, have seen their freedoms reduced as the government seeks to “Sinicise” religions by making the faithful prioritise allegiance to the officially atheist ruling Communist Party.

Islamic crescents and domes have been stripped from mosques, Christian churches shut down and bibles seized, and Tibetan children have been moved from Buddhist temples to schools.

The residents of Weizhou were alarmed by news that the government was planning to demolish the mosque despite initially appearing to approve its construction, which was completed just last year.

I didn't hear even a squeak from China's slaves, the Islamic Republic of Pak, on them curbing the freedom of Muslims. If it had been in India these buggers would have gone to town and raised the issue with all Muslim countries and even petitioned the UN to stop 'human rights violations'.

There is no comparison between Indian and Chinese government. BJP government won't ever dream of destroying a mosque. They are as much subservient to Muslims as previous governments, if not more so. Neither are they going to deport any Bangladeshis.

Agree with you. For the man on the street, capitalism has been very fruitful and any attempt to enforce Communist ideals will be counter productive for the Party. However the dictatorship is in the name and guise of the Communist Party.

Surely it would be better to stick to Tibetans? I'm quite sure that there are several movements in China based on religious freedom for the various Indian religions too. In fact, it's probably something that would get funding from westerners too.

Chinese people have always been pragmatic about religion, ready to accept all kinds of religions as long as the practice of religion does not get in the way of the common masses.

the radicalization of Muslim in other parts of the world is impacting China, colluding with terrorists and secessionists, it's causing troubles in Chinese society.

We dislike troubles, stability is what we Chinese value, a stable environment is the key prerequisite of smooth and steady social development.

Religion policy in China never changed, it's that certain people are attempting to test the water and push the boundaries. it's time to act decisively on these kind of provocations, so that the interest of the majority will be protected.
