Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL), Bangalore, has finalized a joint venture with French company Thales to jointly produce radars.
The BEL-Thales partnership is part of BEL's growth strategy, adopted to prepare the Indian government-owned firm to compete in an Indian defense market where more and more overseas companies are collaborating with Indian entities, a BEL executive said.
BEL and Thales have completed negotiations, and the joint venture agreement likely will be signed in the next month or two, the BEL executive said.
BEL also hopes to team with overseas partners in areas such as missile electronics, guidance systems, microwave super components, electro-optics and airborne electronic warfare systems.
Thales has a joint venture with Samtel Display Systems, a privately owned Indian company, to produce avionics systems and helmet-mounted display systems for the Indian Air Force.
BEL also has agreements with:
■ Private-sector company Astra Microwave Products, Hyderabad, for microwave components.
■ Boeing, Chicago, for joint development of an analysis and experimentation center in India.
■ Israeli firms Israel Aerospace Industries and Elisra to jointly develop UAVs and airborne electronic warfare systems.
Earlier this week, BEL released financial results that revealed an order book of $2 billion as of April 1, and sales of $923.6 million for 2008-09 compared with the previous year's $820.5 million.
