Business Insider (USA): The Russian fighter pilot says he defeated the F-22 in a simulated air battle, but the Pentagon doubts.
It all started with the fact that on the unofficial page of the supposedly retired Russian Su-35 pilot in Instagram, a photo of the American fighter F -22 in the sky over Syria, which was to prove that a Russian aircraft can detect and surpass the American rival.
The photo was similar to the image from the radar system of infrared search and detection, which is installed on the bow of the Su-35 and is looking for thermal radiation from other combat vehicles. Theoretically, this system is able to detect stealth fighters at a short distance. The Russian pilot claimed that he spotted the F-22 during combat operations in Syria, which is completely invisible for traditional radars.
After a detailed description of how these meetings usually take place - there are special communication lines used to prevent incidents between Russia and the US, since they operate in close proximity in Syria - the author claimed that the F-22 was spotted using radar.
"Business insider" offers such a translation of the signature under the photo: "F-22 Hamil and was punished for arrogance after a short air battle, for which, of course, he was given (by foul language) to the brain."
Russia has long scoffed at American stealth fighters and has announced the possibility of defeating them in combat. But to detect the F-22, tracking its thermal radiation, does not mean to knock them down.
Even if the image is genuine, "it does not in any way prove that the Su-35S is really capable of detecting and intercepting the F-22," said Justin Bronk, an expert in aerial combat from the Royal Institute of Joint Services Royal United Services Institute). "Moreover, the F-22 would have known about the presence of the Su-35 in the area, when he only flew into the sky. Therefore, in fact, there is no reason to belittle the combat advantage of the F-22, "the expert said.
"Infrared search and detection systems can be used to record and track stealth aircraft under certain conditions. But this does not solve the problem of fighting against such goals. After all, such systems have a limited range, unlike radars, in addition, they are very vulnerable to changes in the environment, "added Bronk.
Simply put, the F-22 has long been following the movement of the Russian Su-35, when the latter would only notice an American aircraft. In addition, the Russian fighter could have noticed the F-22 only when he flew too close to him. According to Bronk, to look for American stealth planes using infrared search systems is like looking through plastic straws.
In turn, Pentagon spokesman Eric Paon told the "Business insider" that he can not verify the statements made by someone in Instagram. However, he pointed out that "Russia is conducting a campaign of disinformation in Syria to sow confusion and downplay the efforts of the US and its allies in the country." At the same time, Paon added that US pilots can tell exactly when their planes fall on the enemy's sight. So if the Su-35 did it, the American pilots would react.
