Saab Makes Late Pitch For Australian Sub Project | Defense News | defensenews.com

Sep. 13, 2014 - 03:45AM |
By GERARD O'DWYER

Significantly, Saab is showing a clear willingness to share design and construction work relating to the Future Submarine build, including production of core systems and sub-systems, between yards in Sweden and Australia.

Buskhe is also suggesting, as part of broad cooperation partnership, that Swedish and Australian submarine engineers and technicians work together on the 3,000-ton A26 project at its naval vessel design center in Sweden.

Saab, Damen Team Up on Future Submarine Development | Naval Today

Swedish defence and security company Saab is teaming with Dutch shipbuilder Damen Shipyards Group to explore future opportunities in the international submarine market.

The companies have signed an exclusive teaming agreement to work together in pursuit of the potential Walrus-class submarine replacement programme for the Netherlands. In addition to this project, Saab and Damen will also explore ways in which they might bid jointly on other submarine procurement programmes.

Saab and Damen, both independently-owned companies, are confident that their combined skills, expertise and substantial R&D capacity will accelerate submarine development.

Hein van Ameijden, managing director of Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding, said:

"We are convinced that with Saab we have found the ideal partner to realise a successor to the present Walrus class; a vessel that will set a new standard for non-nuclear submarines. The complementarity of both our companies opens up the potential for a successful cooperation in more submarine programmes worldwide.

Gunilla Fransson, head of Saab business area Security and Defence Solutions, added:

"Saab Kockums is looking forward to cooperating with the experienced shipbuilders at Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding. We have the full support of our Swedish customer in broadening our customer base to include a new demanding high-end customer.

"We are negotiating now on A26," Fransson said," and I would expect something in a matter of months."

The new Mark 4 AIP module, he said, "makes better use of waste heat" than the existing Mark 3, and the low sulfur diesel and liquid oxygen that power the engine make for "very easy replenishment." The Swedish Navy, he noted, carries out underway replenishments of its Gotland-class submarines "a couple times" each year. The propulsion plant, Roninqvist added, will also feature a permanent magnet motor allowing for a much smaller generator, although he declined to provide further details.

Saab Kockums projects a building time of about five years for each submarine, Ohlund added, followed by a test-and-trial period, with the first unit being commissioned in late 2022 or early 2023.
