SEVERODVINSK, April 8 (RIA Novosti) - The Sevmash shipyard in northern Russia said on Wednesday it would start construction of a fourth Borey class nuclear-powered strategic submarine this year.

"Russia's Defense Ministry has ordered the shipyard to start construction of the fourth Borey class submarine this year," a Sevmash official told RIA Novosti, adding that work could begin either in July or December

The first Borey class submarine, the Yury Dolgoruky, will start sea trials in June.

The vessel is 170 meters (580 feet) long, has a hull diameter of 13 meters (42 feet), a crew of 107, including 55 officers, a maximum depth of 450 meters (about 1,500 feet) and a submerged speed of about 29 knots. It can carry up to 16 ballistic missiles and torpedoes.

Two other Borey-class nuclear submarines, the Alexander Nevsky and the Vladimir Monomakh, are currently under construction at the Sevmash shipyard and are expected to be completed in 2009 and 2011. Russia is planning to build eight of these submarines by 2015.

All Borey class submarines will be equipped with new Bulava-M (SS-NX-30) intercontinental ballistic missiles, which carry up to 10 nuclear warheads and have a range of 8,000 kilometers (5,000 miles).

this news is of special significance to me becuase i am interested if india might try to acquire the borey class nuclear submarine inplace of the akula class that went through a terrible accident last november during sea trials.
this is not a mere speculation on my part as i have read in a december article<will post the link> that russia is willing to supply the borey class to india instead of the akula and its not much far away as the sea trials are to begin in june 2009, but no confirmation yet from the indian goverment lets wait ..
I think the borey will be better than the akula for indian navy.

I don't think the Russians will aloow as they already have a depleting navy. And we have already paid for the completion of the 2 Nerpas whithout which they would have rotted away.

The Borei class are SSBN's, the Akula's SSN's. That is quite a big jump in what they are offering. If true then it is certainly is very interesting.

Considering the amount of money they have invested in the project (and its importance to them), the current state of their navy, and the importance of maintaining their nuclear deterrence, I would be really surprised if this is true.

Infact they might be tempted to cancel the nuclear submarine lease altogether now that the hard part (completing the construction when money was limited) is over.

It could be possible (however unlikely) that the Russian ministry of defence would be looking at leasing the unfinished Belgorod nuclear submarine to india or that someone from the ministry might have said something on this.

Even that would be troubled given the history of the class.

well why i came to my above conclusion is beacuse of this fact below i quote the russian president dimitry medvedev during his visit to india on the 4th of dec 2008, its after the accident has taken place on the akula in november.

he says:
“We are talking also about cooperation in the sphere of leasing atomic submarines,” Medvedev said, according to a Kremlin transcript. “This is in fact also an important and highly technological area of cooperation.”

link of the interview http://www.prisonplanet.com/russia-may-lease-nuclear-subs-to-india.html

he didnt reveal much but in a diplomatic way put the thing that some level of talk is on regarding the matter, and it was after the incident on the akula which india was to have originally so it brings me to the point that there might be a renegotiation on the whole issue also as unofficial media reports claim that india did fund the construction so they must have them.
below i am presenting the whole list of new subramines that will be in service for russia in the next few years. india can bargain hard for one of them.

MOSCOW, March 19 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian Navy maintains a fleet of about 60 nuclear-powered and diesel-electric submarines, a senior Navy official said on Thursday.

"These 60 vessels include 10 nuclear-powered strategic submarines, over 30 nuclear-powered attack submarines, diesel-electric submarines and special-purpose subs," the source said.

Delta-IV and Delta-III class subs form the backbone of Russia's strategic submarine fleet. They each carry 16 ballistic missiles with multiple warheads, and feature advanced electronics and noise reduction.

"The world's largest Typhoon-class submarines also remain in service with the Russian Navy," the official said.

The Dmitry Donskoy submarine has been modernized as a test platform for Russia's new Bulava missile. Two other subs, the Arkhangelsk and the Severstal, remain in reserve at a naval base in Severodvinsk in north Russia.

"They will most likely be modernized to carry new-generation sea-based cruise missiles to match the U.S. Ohio class submarines," he said.

Russia has started mooring trials of the first Borey class nuclear-powered strategic submarine, which will be equipped with Bulava sea-based ballistic missiles.

The Yury Dolgoruky submarine, built at the Sevmash plant in northern Russia, was taken out of dry dock in April 2007.

The vessel is 170 meters (580 feet) long, has a hull diameter of 13 meters (42 feet), a crew of 107, including 55 officers, maximum depth of 450 meters (about 1,500 feet) and a submerged speed of about 29 knots. It can carry up to 16 ballistic missiles and torpedoes.

Two other Borey class nuclear submarines, the Alexander Nevsky and the Vladimir Monomakh, are currently under construction at the Sevmash shipyard and are expected to be completed in 2009 and 2011. Russia is planning to build a total of eight submarines of this class by 2015.

Russia's nuclear-powered attack submarine fleet comprises vessels of the Oscar II and Akula class. Each sub is equipped with 24 SS-N-19 Shipwreck long-range anti-ship cruise missiles.

A fourth-generation Graney class nuclear-powered attack submarine will be delivered to the Russian Navy in 2010-2011. The Severodvinsk submarine combines the ability to launch a variety of long-range cruise missiles (up to 3,100 miles) with nuclear warheads, and effectively engage hostile submarines and surface warships.

"The tests of the cruise missile for the submarine are under way," the source said.

Diesel-electric submarines in the Russian Navy are represented by Kilo class vessels. They will be gradually replaced by Project 667 Lada class submarines. The sub features a new anti-sonar coating for its hull, an extended cruising range, and advanced anti-ship and anti-submarine weaponry, including Club-S cruise missile systems.

The first submarine of the Lada class, named the St. Petersburg, is undergoing sea trials and may enter service with the Russian Navy this year.

A second Lada class submarine, the Kronshtadt, which is the first in the production series, is also being built at St. Petersburg's Admiralty Shipyards and will be commissioned in 2009.

A third submarine, whose keel was laid in November 2006, is named after a city associated with Russian naval glory - Sevastopol - and is expected to be launched in 2010.

The source also said the Russian Navy has several 'special purpose' submarines designed for testing of new technologies and weaponry. Some open sources earlier reported the existence of Project 20120 B-90 Sarov diesel-electric submarine, which has a nuclear reactor as a supplementary power generator.

The vessel was commissioned in 2007 and according to some reports may be used by Russia's Northern Fleet as a spy vessel in northern waters.

The Russian navy is also planning to build around 6 Aircraft carriers of 80K class. But the trend still seems to remain as a sub-centred force.

What is the chance of Russian giving their SSBN to India, it is very very slim, long shot if their is financial trouble, but given the fact that Russian are getting rich by selling gas, Russian will never lease or sell their SSBN to India, at least not in near future.

SSBN is major weapon of power projection and nation dont just give these types of weapons to other nations they are strategic weapons with far reaching consequences and often times used for arm twisting.

World is not accepting India's need for SSN, that is why Franch has issued the statement that they are cool to the idea of nucelar attack sub, this is de facto recognitation of India's ATV project by major powers (Russia and France) at present.

BTW our own ATV is baby SSBN if not nano SSBN.

Well a baby BOOMER is a cool concept. I would like to see it as a cross between an SSBN, SSGN and an SSN.
