Nato supplies ambush kills two in Khyber

Friday, 15 Oct, 2010

PESHAWAR: A government official says gunmen have killed two people in an ambush on a truck in the northwestern Khyber tribal region on its way back home after delivering Nato supplies in Afghanistan.
Iqbal Khan says the truck was attacked early Friday morning near Jamrud in Khyber tribal region. The driver and his assistant were killed, and the unidentified gunmen then torched the truck.

It was the most recent in a rash of attacks on the Pakistan supply line used to carry non-lethal goods to US and other Nato forces in Afghanistan.

Many came when Pakistan closed a key border crossing for 11 days after a Nato helicopter strike that killed two Pakistani border guards, leaving many trucks stranded and vulnerable along their routes. Pakistan reopened the route Sunday. —AP

The WOT now really needs to be shifted to Pakistan from Afghanistan if at all NATO/US is serious about going hot on terrorism. Why is USA so scared of attacking Pakistan? What's stopping it? Afghanistan is NOT the stronghold of Taliban and is merely a cross border picnic for them. Pakistan is their beehive which must be assaulted. There've already been 15,000 casualties for the NATO forces despite knowing very well who's the real culprit. Wonder what juice is US trying to extract out of a dead mango that is now Pakistan.

Because they look far into the future and know pak will fall quickly into the hands of China if they invade. Plus they want to contain both India and China.

They dont care about terrorism....they are looking out for there own national interests.

Three soldiers killed in South Waziristan: official

Tuesday, 19 Oct, 2010

PESHAWAR: Militants attacked a Pakistani military convoy on Tuesday, killing three soldiers in the tribal badlands of Waziristan on the Afghan border, a security official said.

The attack took place in the Kalundar Keley area of South Waziristan, about 60 kilometres (37 miles) north of the district's main town Wana.

"Militants attacked a security force patrol on Tuesday in Kalundar Keley area, killing three troops and wounding two others," a senior security official in the area told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The official said an earlier roadside bomb attack in the same area wounded two more soldiers. A second security official confirmed the deaths.—AFP

Bomb kills Pakistani soldiers in Khyber

PESHAWAR: Three Pakistani soldiers were killed Wednesday when a bomb ripped through their patrol in the Khyber region of the tribal belt on the Afghan border, a military spokesman said.
The soldiers from the paramilitary Frontier Corps (FC) were on a routine patrol when the bomb planted by militants hit a vehicle, the spokesman said.
The incident happened in Qambar Khel town, which lies on the route of NATO supply convoys heading to the US-led war effort in Afghanistan.
"Three FC soldiers were killed and three wounded," the spokesman said, blaming "miscreants" for the attack in a term used by Pakistani military commanders to denote militants.
Khyber is home to Taliban insurgents and militants from extremist group Lashkar-e-Islam led by local warlord Mangal Bagh.
Washington has branded the tribal belt a global headquarters of Al-Qaeda and wants Pakistan to do more to fight insurgents streaming across its border into Afghanistan, and will press its ally on the issue during talks Wednesday.

Karachi city reels after 51 killed
AP, Oct 20, 2010, 11.43am IST

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's largest city reeled on Wednesday after gunmen opened fire in a commercial market, killing 11 people in the latest spasm of violence to underscore the poor state of law and order in this US-allied nation.

At least 51 people, including several political activists, have been killed and dozens more wounded since Saturday in Karachi, a sprawling port city of more than 16 million residents that is prone to political, ethnic and religious strife. Many killings in Karachi have been linked to gangs allegedly controlled by political parties.

The attack on the market occurred late Tuesday and its victims included eight Pakistanis of Baluch descent, said Sharmila Farooqi, a provincial government spokeswoman. The wave of violence in the city has coincided with Sunday's election to replace a provincial lawmaker killed in August.

Because of its status as the country's main economic hub, keeping Karachi calm is of prime importance to Pakistani leaders who have already seen criminal activity soar alongside Taliban-led Islamist militant violence.

A major chunk of supplies for US and NATO troops is shipped to the city before traveling overland in Pakistan and into neighboring Afghanistan.

Farooqi said police had detained 55 suspects in connection with the latest violence, and that some were linked to local political parties. Security forces were patrolling the city to prevent fresh violence on Wednesday, she said.

The two parties most linked to violence in Karachi - the Muttahida Quami Movement and the Awami National Party - have their electoral bases in different ethnic groups that make up a large share of the city's population.

The MQM claims to represent the Urdu-speaking descendants of those people who came to Karachi from India soon after the birth of Pakistan in 1947. It is secular and likes to speak out against the so-called Talibanization of the city, a jab at the Awami National Party, which represents the ethnic Pashtuns from the Taliban heartland in the northwest.

Raza Haider, the member of the provincial assembly who was gunned down in August, was a senior member of the MQM.

Both parties were competing for Haider's vacant seat, but the ANP announced Saturday evening that it would boycott the election, saying the MQM would rig the vote. The MQM won the seat.

MQM lawmaker Haider Abbas Rizvi said the party had handed authorities a list of 150 alleged criminals it suspects in the attacks but that nothing had come of it. He not only blamed the ANP, but also faulted the Pakistan People's Party, which control's the provincial government.

ANP spokesman Amin Khattak said the MQM was to blame, noting that the killings began shortly after his party said it would boycott the election.

Also Wednesday, a police constable was wounded when someone threw a grenade at a checkpoint on the outskirts of Pakistan's main northwestern city, Peshawar, said Liaquat Ali, a senior police official. Peshawar is right on the edge of Pakistan's tribal belt, a lawless stretch of territory along the Afghan border where many militants shelter.

Officer, soldiers among 11 killed in terror attacks

KALAYA / PESHAWAR: A lieutenant-colonel, five soldiers and five civilians were killed in bomb attacks on a paramilitary convoy in Orakzai Agency and a mosque near Peshawar on Friday.

A bomb planted on a road in Yakho Kandao area was detonated by remote control when a paramilitary convoy was going from Ghaljo to Thall garrison in Hangu district.

Lt-Col Mohammad Yousaf who belonged to Sargodha and soldiers Tahir Marwat, Habib Mangal, Mohammad Khan, Hanif Rehman and Mazhar Hussain were killed. Two soldiers were injured.

The area was cordoned off and a search operation was carried out, but no arrest was made.

At least five people were killed and 30 injured in the bomb attack on the main mosque of Peshtakhara Bala near Peshawar.

The blast damaged parts of the mosque and shattered windowpanes of nearby houses.

Peshawar police chief Liaquat Ali Khan told reporters that the explosive device placed beside a pillar in the veranda was detonated by remote control.

He said security had been beefed up around all mosques in bazaars and congested areas, but securing such places in villages was almost impossible.

He said that apparently the attacker entered the mosque when worshippers were gathering for Friday prayers. The explosion took place at about 1.55pm when people had started leaving.

He said that in view of the situation, people should set up local peace committees, keep an eye on suspicious people and provide information about their movement to police.

Major Shafqat Malik, the chief of the bomb disposal unit said small ball bearings had been found at the place, adding that 3kgs of explosives used in the blast left a deep crater in the veranda. The explosives were packed in a canister wrapped in cloth.

Cantonment Circle SP Shafiullah Khan said a search operation had been launched in the area close to Khyber Agency.

The blast killed Naseer (18), Rehmat (20), Hasnain (5), Haroon (9) and Younus Khan (10). The injured were taken to the Khyber Teaching Hospital, Lady Reading Hospital and Hayatabad Medical Complex where six of them were in critical condition.

Mohajirullah, who was in the mosque, said he was offering prayers when he heard the blast and rushed to the veranda. "It was smoke all around with the victims lying on the ground and the injured crying in pain."

Most of the injured were young men or children. Villagers took them to hospitals in private vehicles.

Senior provincial minister Bashir Ahmed Bilour said that terrorists, who were in disarray because of action taken against them, had started attacking innocent people in places of worship.

He said the government was determined to continue to mount pressure on terrorists till their elimination. He announced a compensation of Rs300,000 for each deceased and Rs100,000 for the injured.

A police post had been attacked in Bara Qadeem locality in the same area on Wednesday.

HIDEOUTS ATTACKED: After the explosion in Orakzai, helicopters gunships attacked suspected militant hideouts in the upper tehsil of the agency. Security officials claimed that 12 insurgents had been killed and eight injured.

The claim could not be verified from independent sources.

FUNERAL: The funeral of Lt-Col Yousaf and the five soldiers was held in Peshawar, attended by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Owais Ahmad Ghani and senior military officers.

Talking to reporters, the governor said the nation had been rendering sacrifices for three years and despite casualties and sufferings people's morale was high. "We have to win this war at all cost."

He said the war against terrorism might continue for another three years.

AP adds: Officials in the tribal region said some areas in Kurram Agency had also come under helicopter attack and the total number of suspected insurgents killed was 16.

A police official in Peshawar said the bomb attack on the mosque might have been carried out to avenge a recent crackdown on militants in the area.

Two US drone strikes kill seven in North Waziristan

Wednesday, 27 Oct, 2010

PESHAWAR: Suspected US drones fired missiles at a house and a vehicle in a militant-infested area of northwestern Pakistan near the Afghan border Wednesday, killing seven people, intelligence officials said.

The strikes were nearly 12 hours apart in the North Waziristan tribal area. They were the latest attacks in an intensifying campaign by the US to use unmanned aircraft in Pakistan to wage war against militants.

There have now been at least 19 suspected US missile strikes in Pakistan this month, many of them in North Waziristan. There were 21 such attacks in September, nearly double the previous monthly record.

The first strike occurred at about 3:30 a.m. when a drone fired a missile at a house in the Spin Wam area, killing three people, said the intelligence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

The second attack took place around 2:45 p.m. when a drone fired a missile at a vehicle in the Datta Khel area, killing four suspected foreign militants, the officials said. Two were Arab and two were Western, they said.

No additional information about the suspected militants was provided. But many US drone strikes in recent months have targeted fighters linked to the Haqqani network, which military officials have declared the most dangerous militant group in Afghanistan.—AP

Man arrested in plot to attack Washington Metro stations

WASHINGTON: A Virginia man who believed he was trying to help al-Qaida plan bombings at Washington area Metrorail stations was arrested on Wednesday, the Justice Department said.

Farooque Ahmed, 34, of Ashburn, was taken into custody early in the morning, the department said in a statement.

"Officials emphasized that at no time was the public in danger during this investigation and that the FBI was aware of Ahmed's activities from before the alleged attempt began and closely monitored his activities until his arrest," it said.

U.S. missile strikes kill 14 in Pakistan

October 28, 2010

Fourteen suspected militants were killed in missile strikes in north-west Pakistan in the last 24 hours, according to intelligence officials.

American unmanned planes fired two missiles at a house in a Pakistani tribal region close to the Afghan border on Thursday, killing seven alleged militants, the latest in a barrage of such attacks, intelligence officials said.

The strike in North Waziristan was the third attack there in the past 24 hours.

The region is home to hundreds of Pakistan and foreign Islamist militants, many belonging to or allied with al—Qaida and the Taliban. It is also the base of a powerful insurgent group that U.S. officials say is behind many of the attacks just across the border in Afghanistan.

Thursday's strike in the Datta Khel area killed five unidentified "foreign" and two local militants, three intelligence officials said. They did not give their names in line with the policy of the agency they work for.

It is all but impossible to independently verify the accounts of intelligence officials. The region is too dangerous for outsiders to visit the scene of the attacks and U.S. officials do not acknowledge firing the missiles, much less discuss who they are targeting.

Two other attacks on Wednesday killed seven suspected militants.

There have now been at least 20 suspected U.S. missile strikes in Pakistan this month, many of them in North Waziristan. There were 21 such attacks in September, nearly double the previous monthly record.

Washington is under pressure to beat back the insurgency in Afghanistan and bring its troops there back home.

Many of the missile strikes are reported to hit at militants focused on fighting in Afghanistan and using North Waziristan as a safe haven. The Pakistan army has so far resisted U.S. pressure to launch an offensive in the region, as it has in other border areas.

Pakistani officials often publicly criticize the strikes, but the surge over the last two months has not led to increased protests, suggesting the army does not object to them. The silence over the drones contrast with the outcry over incursions into Pakistani territory by NATO helicopters earlier this month that led to Islamabad blocking a key supply route for U.S. and allied force.

The army is widely believed to provide intelligence information for the drone attacks and even allows drones to take off from a base inside Pakistan. Human rights groups have raised concerns of civilian casualties and questioned the legality of what they sometimes term "extrajudicial killings."

Suicide attack on police in Swabi; two policemen killed

KARACHI: A suicide bomber killed two Pakistani policemen and wounded 10 others as security forces tried to stop him from walking into their local headquarters on Monday, police said.

The bomber blew himself up outside the Shah Mansoor compound of police offices and residences in Swabi, 100 kilometres northwest of Islamabad.

"Two policemen were martyred and 10 others were injured when a suicide bomber exploded himself after being stopped at the main gate," senior police official Abdullah Khan told AFP.

Five persons allegedly attacked the Shah Mansoor Police Lines, DawnNews reported.

According to the Deputy Police Officer Swabi, just after the blast, heavy fire was exchanged between police and the alleged terrorists. One militant was shot dead but the other three escaped.

According to police officials, the area has been cordoned off.

More than 3,740 people have been killed in suicide attacks and bombings, blamed on homegrown Taliban and other extremist networks, since government troops stormed a radical mosque in Islamabad three years ago.

According to the Pakistani military, 2,421 army and paramilitary soldiers were killed and 7,195 wounded in fighting with extremist militants from 2002 until April this year. —Agencies
