A noob question...
We have inducted C-17s which can carry 1 MBT at a time. Why are not heavy freight carriers used instead which can carry 2-3 MBTs at a time?
- Antonov An-124
- Antonov An-225
- Boeing 747-400ERF
Because freighters that are more than the size of C17s are so heavy that they cannot be used for tactical ops or on short/rugged runways, or in high altitude improvised airstrips should there be a need for rapid deployment of assets.
Yes, C-17 can take off and land in 2.5km runway, where as the ones i mentioned require 3.2km runway with MTOW.
But 700m extra airstrip vs ability to carry 3 times more freight (2 times in high altitude)... shouldn't it be worth looking into?
