5.56x45 and some 7.62x39(for RR) or so called Carbine-
Indian designed and built rifles will be procured to satisfy this requirement. (most probably INSAS 1c and Ghatak)..For urban combat and issued to non frontline troops..
Current production lines for Indian Made Weapons are busy filling tenders for Central Armed Police/Paramil / State Police Units. - do they have the capacity to produce for the MoD as well without screwing up quality?

Also - will the foreign bought guns be made in India? or direct import? If Made in India is there a private player already ear-marked? because no way can OFB take this on as well and maintain quality.

All decisions to equip with a rifle have been made. Approvals have been given, money has been earmarked but which rifle we are talking about.

The Indian made IC rifle costs $400. The Israeli Galil is about $1,500. The FN SCAR can go to upto $4-5000 a piece. Other European versions are not cheaper at all. Hence which one.

The numbers published and amount earmarked points roughly to Galil Ace. Hence, again - is this the rifle under serious consideration. My guess is that Punj Lloyd will make it in India from a few imported parts.

Guys any guesses from you.

Introducing multiple types of rifles except specialized units like Special Forces, Sniper Units and officers who will carry a carbine (previously a highly successful Sten Gun) or urban warfare will be a great travesty. It will complicate the supply train as well as the repair and modification facilities.

Buy and make in India category . What kind of this shit . Better to say We r buying a foreign rifle. OFB employees will again do their screwdriving job:facepalm:.
You missed 'Made In India'. It means the IPR should be with India. License production doesn't come under this.

'Buy and Make (Indian)' is one category. It doesn't mean Buy foreign and Make Indian. It simply means Buy Indian and Make Indian.

Any information about sniper rifle selection? Will they buy immediately or they will again go for tender, re tender bs
Tender is not a big deal. Big deal is the all weather trial.

There would be tender for this it seems.

Why is this suspense? Government should clarify if they are going for indigenous or for foreign. We need a lot of hardware. Better it should be indigenous so as to better utilize available foreign currency for critical force multipliers that cannot be made in India yet.

You simply can't say BLACK or WHITE in such case. There need to be some GREY area in such kind of procurement else whoever is the manufactures, they would milk you DRY.

Shit, that means they will do trial for another 3-4 years minimum:frusty:
Now the ball is in IA and IAF court. Although GoI had talked about fast track, but they are limited only upto fund release. Now which platform is to select depends on user.

What caliber is India settled on? Looks like decision makers are all over the place without clear thinking. 5.56 or 7.62 AK or 7.62 NATO?

Ideally, I like the AK round as it gives the lethal punch, its light weight and works for most engagements.

7.62 NATO is just too big. It’s recoil is excessive for average soldier, too few can be carried due to weight and its ballistic performance is not enough to justify use. However, its still a great round for LMG and GPMG.

5.56 is a good round due to its high velocity, light weight, low recoil and many available rifles to fire it. However, in extreme conditions of hot and high places, its performance deteriorates - as seen in Afghanistan.

It’s interesting that you mentioned that. The problem with high velocity round such as 5.56 is that it performs better when it hits a hard target such as large bone, metal etc. because it can dissipate all its energy to that hard surface. Therefore, a 5.56 hitting someone’s shoulder or femur can be lethal. However, soft targets such as abdomen and chest do not allow the faster round to give up its energy at once and round can go through the body with small exit wound and little damage. This is a major problem with 5.56 against determined terrorists who may keep fighting despite being wounded. Slower rounds such as AK tumble right away when hit something and create great damage to body. However due to slower speed, they have lower range and accuracy compared to 5.56

It is a proven fact that 7.62 NATO is a kill round. And provides much more punch then 5.56 nato. Now we want to kill our enemy instead of incapacitating him. No question in that.

There is a simple reason why Indian Army is going for 7.62x51...that reason is operational TERRAIN...the entire border with Pakistan & China comprises of wide open spaces(Mountains, Deserts, Plains), where 7.62x51 outranges and outmatches both 5.56x45 and 7.62x39...Also, Pakistan's main service rifle is in 7.62x51.....

Our Army has learned from the experience of US and other NATO forces in Afghanistan(very similar terrain)....These forces often found themselves outranged and outgunned by rebels firing 7.62x54r , from a distance....Their standard rifles in 5.56x45 lacked both range and punch to counter rebels...So US , UK and other NATO countries had to bring in big numbers, light rifle platforms in 7.62x51(FN SCAR, HK 417, LMT) other than existing light/medium machine guns...

For the urban combat and counter insurgency 5.56x45 with modern projectiles and rifles will be continued, i think...7.62x39, just has advantage in short range punch....

I think Insas MK 1C rifle will be given non-infantry units while imported rifle will be given infantry units deployed at LOC.
