Naval Barak-8 Missiles, Israel - Naval Technology

Naval Barak-8 is a long-range anti-air and anti-missile naval defence system being developed jointly by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) of India. Surface-to-air missiles (SAM) can counter attack aircraft, UAVs and incoming anti-ship missiles. The missile is expected to enter service with the Indian Navy in 2013.

In January 2006, India and Israel signed a $350m agreement to co-develop a new generation long-range surface-to-air missile (LR-SAM) for Indian Navy ships.

In April 2009, Israel signed a $1.1bn contract to deliver an upgraded Barak-8 air defence system to India. Deliveries are expected to be concluded by 2017.

Development and tests of the long-range anti-air / anti-missile

Rafael Advanced Defence Systems and Elta Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of IAI, were subcontracted for the Barak-8 joint development programme. Rafael provides missile interceptors, while Elta is responsible for the radar system.

The first test of Barak-8 missile took place in Israel in May 2010. The next test is planned to be conducted in Israel in 2012. The weapon qualification programme will involve eight test firings conducted in Israel and India prior to entry into service.

Components of the missile system, including the four-plane MF-STAR radars and shipboard electronic modules were delivered to India for final assembly.

Naval Barak-8 missiles will be installed on the three Project 15A Kolkata Class guided-missile destroyers under construction at the Mazagon shipyard in India. Delivery of the first frigate is scheduled for 2012, and Barak-8 missiles aboard the frigate are expected to become operational in 2013.

Four Project 15B Kolkata Class destroyers will also be armed with extended range surface-to-air missiles (ER-SAM). The extended-range missile can strike targets within the range of 100km.

Naval Barak-8 design and features

Barak-8 is a safe carry and launch missile for ships and is based on the small missile and proven vertical launcher concept. It can be easily fitted to existing or new warships, as the installation of the vertical launcher requires small deck space.

The system components include vertically launched missile, a dual-pulse rocket motor, active radar seeker and a two-way data link.
The missile is capable of intercepting supersonic sea-skimming anti-ship missiles and high altitude targets. It can simultaneously engage multiple targets in severe saturation scenarios. The multitarget capability will be achieved by a high performance warhead with an effective hit-to-kill mechanism.

The missile demonstrates exceptional interception characteristics throughout a very wide operational envelope. The same interceptor missile can be equipped with an additional booster motor for increasing the range. An advanced stand alone data link supports multiple simultaneous target intercepts and optimised wide area protection.

The missile will have a length of about 4.5m, diameter of 0.54m and a wingspan of 0.94m. It can travel at a maximum speed of Mach 2, with an operational range of 70km.

MF-STAR radar used on the jointly developed naval defence system

The MF-STAR radar will provide mid-course guidance updates for the missile initially after the launch from the ship. MF-STAR is a multifunction surveillance track and guidance radar for modern naval ships.

The radar uses multibeam, pulse Doppler and electronic counter-counter measures (ECCM) techniques to detect fast moving and low-RCS targets, even in complex environments / conditions and jamming environments.

The radar system provides 360° degree coverage and allows interception of incoming missile as close as 500m away from the ship. During the terminal phase, the second motor will be fired and active radar seeker will be activated to home on to the target.
Propulsion of the Israeli / Indian surface-to-air missiles

Propulsion power for the missile will be provided by a dual pulse rocket motor developed by DRDO. The prototypes were delivered to IAI for final assembly, along with other systems to produce the complete missile.

The rocket motor provides high manoeuvrability at target interception range throughout the wide envelope of the missile.

Barak-8 MR-SAM Program

Barak-8 /MR-SAM Program

India and Israel agreed to jointly develop a new long range, land-based air defense system to replace the aging Pechora (SA-3 GOA) missiles currently in service with the Indian Air Force. Covering a range of 70 km, the new missile will almost double the range of the 60km vertically launched Barak 8 shipborne missile (also known as Barak NG) currently being developed for the Indian and Israeli Navies under a US$480 million five year program launched in early 2006.

The new missile system will be based on the medium-range naval air defense missile currently under development for the Indian and Israeli Navies. The naval application of the missile will be integrated with the MF-STAR phased array shipborne radar, which Elta claims to be superior to the SPY-1 AEGIS radar. Overall, the MF-STAR / Barak 8 combination is claimed to be superior to the leading US made systems such as AEGIS or Patriot PAC-3 missile systems.

Barak 8 missile utilizes a fully active seeker, the missile is not dependent on the launcher for targeting and guidance, and can perform at much longer ranges, offering effective protection from aerial threats, manned, unmanned as well as guided weapons. Covering both low and high altitudes, the missile is designed for operation on-board ships as well as for terrestrial applications. Barak 8 system is designed to engage multiple targets simultaneously with deadly effectiveness. The missile uses vertical launched missile is designed to offer 360 degrees protection, utilizing an advanced active radar seeker. The missile is equipped with a two-way datalink, supporting mid-course updating and terminal updating and validation. To extend its datalink and C3 coverage over a wide area, the system will integrate surface based radars and communications elements with airborne manned and unmanned elements, maximizing its operability and range over all types of terrain.

MR-SAM is expected to streamline with the original Barak 8 schedule, adding about $300 million to the program development cost. In its decision last week the Indian Government earmarked a total funding of about Rs10,000 crore (about US$2.5 billion) for the medium range surface-to-air missiles (MR-SAM) project. The program will include the deployment of up to nine air defense squadrons. The MR-SAM development will be conducted under the bilateral agreement signed between the two countries, which will guide the scope of collaboration formulating between DRDO and IAI defined in a memorandum of agreement signed in New Delhi, June 2007.

The Indian Air Force plans to re-equip nine air defense squadrons with the new missile, each including two batteries comprising a multi-mission radar system performing target acquisition and guidance, command-and-control element and three container-launchers each mounting eight missiles.

Prime contractor for the program will be the Indian DRDO, with IAI missile and space group acting as leading subcontractor with IAI's Elta Systems providing the radar and Israel's RAFAEL producing the interceptor missiles. According to the bilateral agreement, the Indians will be able to locally produce and support the systems.

Barak 8 is expected to be part of a new offensive and defensive system suite under development at IAI's Missiles and Space division. This new family of weapons will also comprise the latest generation Gabriel 5 anti-ship missile, an integrated combat management system and multi-function EL/M-2248 MF-STAR shipborne phased array radar system.

BARAK 8 is a cutting edge SAM being developed it's strength lies it in it's advanced seeker & it's antijamming capabilty .

Well it's speed /range is less than ASTER 30 but it is indeed would give IN capabilty to go in hostile waters .

aster 30 is a big very expensive missile that has limited ABM capability
Barack 8 is cheaper ( 10 : 1 ) range and can only engage aircraft / cruse missile
you can fit Barack 8 on much smaller ships
the Kolkata Class guided-missile destroyers will carry between 64 and 80 missile ready to fire
the germen lsc next gen Israeli naval fighter will carry 32 missile ready to fire

after 2 tests we have a 90% hit to kill with 1 missile per aggressor and 99% with two
bramos is a great missile i wish we could buy a few
but Gabriel 5 will have to do
well it is hard to believe for me as Brahmos makes a violent manuveur (steep dive) at it's terminal stage to confuse enemy's air defences but the greatest draw back is big RCS

but can u plz give some more details that at what range Barack 8 intercepted BRAHMOS ,if it interecepted it within 30km distance then it is indeed a remarkable achievement

Barack 8 has a parabolic look down self guide mode that is unique tech
sea skimmers are very easy pray from this position
if the ship radar can detect an approximate position before hand

officially Barack 8 is slower then bramos but only officially
rule off thumb Russia always exaggerate by 10% and Israel always hide 10% off real capability
mf star (my baby) can track bramos for frigate mast from 50 km away
and from destroyer mast 80 km away
the dual pulse motor made in India is your first world class truly indigence military product well done

Trishul's failure was negated with this development.

If possible, can you provide us with small snippets about the MF STAR?
