Troops are getting more and more used to the rifle. Looking at this I don't have qualms at outfitting all of the frontline infantry with 7.62x51 battle rifles.

Line of sight is obstructed by big paintball magazine so what you do in this situation
And look at head position Japanese drills are similar to US soldiers as they frequent trained by them

16'' is a compromise between having a 7.62x51 rifle with good ballistic capabilities ~500m and compact enough for close quarters and to fit in a BMP-2.
