Quite good article

but the latter move invites questions about the viability of a fourth-generation fighter in what will very firmly be a fifth-gen world.
angad singh keeps making this point again and again, has any retired airmen from IAF penned any thoughts on practicality of this point? surely there is a role non-5th gen fighter jets for medium term.

Is it absolutely necessary to carry 3 drop tanks at all times?? Is the range that limited??!!

Ps - Sorry if I sound like a noob; but that's because I AM a noob when it comes to anything that flies.
No it isn't. In most cases sorties carried out by the squadron will last for 30-45 minutes. For those sorties, the center drop tank or 2 inboard drop tanks are sufficient.

movement of files on defence procurement months before elections is itself unprecedented.
in 2019, feb was when last approvals were given, procurement process resumed after elections.
in 2014 before elections, last major procurement activity was scrapping of agusta deal.

In this case it's only the tender which's been floated. Long way to go before order is placed. The last time MoD took 2 yrs IIRC to negotiate the price with HAL & place the order .

This won't take as much time given it is a follow on order for the Tejas Mk1A with precedent having been set and benchmark prices from the first contract.

could be, HAL as lead integrator is dependant it's suppliers, the price they quote is sum total of what their vendors are quoting + their own work share.

there could literally be thousands of sub-contracts built into this one main contract. if delivery has to happen on time, everyone in the entire supply chain has to be in sync. on top of this, there is going to be contingency planning.
