I had finally gotten to sleep at about 3 a.m. on a busy night on call in the hospital during my residency. Moments later the phone next to the bed in the call room rings. “Hello, this is Dr. Weeks,” I say grumpily.
“This is student nurse Betty Jo on 4 South and Mr. Smith has a temperature of 101 degrees. What do you want me to do?”
“I’m not familiar with Mr. Smith, what is he being treated for?”
“Oh he was pronounced dead by Dr. Zane two hours ago.”
I am momentarily speechless. Possible responses included,
“What the hell are you taking his temperature for in that case, you idiot?” or
“Give him two aspirin and call me in the morning.” or
(considering the reputation of Dr. Zane,) “Are you sure he’s dead?”
but what I said instead was, “What was his temperature when he was pronounced dead?”
“Oh it was 104.2 then,” she responds.
“Ok, fine,” I reply, “let me know if it goes back up again.”
