Mars mission: ISRO boosts many nations to follow suit, says ISRO chief

Buoyed by the successful Mars mission launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), many nations are now approaching it wanting to stem their own Mars mission, including S Korea and the UAE, said AS Kirankumar, Chairman of ISRO in the city on Thursday. Incidentally ISRO also had plans to launch the first SAARC satellite for the region by the end of next year “Lots of countries, including Korea and one of the Gulf countries, have showed interest in deep space exploration and want to start their own Mars mission. A team from Korea came last week and met the scientists here and they are looking at help from us. More countries are approaching us after the completion of our Mars Mission to understand how things can be done. With regards to our plans of launching the first SAARC satellite, we have met (representatives) of all nations in June this year and through the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) have provided them specific aspects on use of slots on frequencies and the work is in progress,” said A S Kirankumar, who currently holds the post of Secretary, Department of Space and is the Director of the Space Applications Centre (SAC), Ahmedabad. Kirankumar will inaugurate SAC’s 40 year celebration of SITE (Satellite Instructional Television Experiment) programme which was flagged off in 1975, on Friday. The scientist hailed the ‘techno- social’ programme as an important one, which convinced the Indian government of the importance of space technology in communication.

Isro’s GSAT-6 communications satellite prepares for launch

The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) is preparing to launch GSAT-6 communications satellite aboard the Geo-synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) D6 on 27 August.

The launch will be carried out from Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

The 2.5t vehicle is estimated to cost around Rs2.5bn ($38.3m), reported Press Trust of India

According to Isro, the 49.1m GSLV-D6 will have a lift-off mass of 416t, and its metallic payload fairing has a diameter of 3.4m.

The vehicle is configured with the three stages, including the cryogenic upper-stage (CUS) similar to the one launched during the GSLV-D5 mission last year.

With a mass of 2,117kg, the GSAT-6 is designed to provide S-band communication services in the country. It will be stationed at 83°E longitude.

"The GSAT 6 will accelerate growth in the field of communication sector in the country.."

ISRO chairman Kiran Kumar earlier said: "The satellite will give you a capability with very small hand-held device to communicate, so like a small mobile you can communicate directly through the satellite to any other part, because the antenna size is very large, so it has got a signal grasping power much larger."
Thiruvananthapuram-based Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre director Sivan said that the GSAT 6 will accelerate growth in the field of communication sector in the country.
Meanwhile, Isro is planning to conduct test flight of its first-ever developed re-usable satellite launch vehicle in the fourth quarter of this year.
Kumar was quoted by The Times of India as saying that the agency has secured approval for three major missions, including the Chandrayaan 2, Aditya and AstroSAT mission.
AstroSAT mission is planned for launch in September.

This is a proper Cryogenic Engine, right? Not a Semi-Cryogenic engine, I hope.

Good luck to ISRO.

This is the third time the indigenously developed Cryogenic Upper Stage (CUS) is being carried on-board during a GSLV flight. GSLV-D6 flight is significant since it intends to continue the testing of CUS

This is a Cryogenic engine only.
Semi Cryogenic Engine in my view is actually more complex and will be an achievement too!

Semi Cryo is a critical pre-requisite step to heavy launch capability. It will initially boost GSLV III launch capacity from 4 tons to 6 tons.

Both are equally complex. The difference is that cryogenic engine is mostly used as an upper stage engine where as semi cryogenic engine is mostly used for core stage.

The NASA SLS will be using the RS 25 cryogenic engine as a core stage. It's currently the most advanced engine in the world.
