The sooner we get the sub, the sooner we can train a crew, the sooner can the ATV be operationalized.

2 would have helped. But, 1 is enough.

The Nerpa crew is a buffer. As soon as an ATV is ready, we can transfer the Nerpa crew into the ATV and start training the next ATV crew in the Nerpa. This is a seriously big advantage.

They are not giving the sub for free.... They extract money for everything.... Let us have it for prestige or for Shitting... Why they hell they care..... If they have sub... let them give.... else tell that they need the Sub for their own use.....

No offence meant against the Russian's

it's not a nuclear attack submarine , it do not have nuclear weapons on it.
it's nuclear driven submarine , submarine has a nuclear reactor onboard which provides propellent energy to drive it ..

Can anyone tell if the 'lease' instead of 'purchase' means IN can't modify it to carry any indigenous cruise missile with nuclear warhead? Like may be submarine version of Nirbhay? btw, Nerpa is an Akula-II class submarine and it would be equipped with 28 3M-54 Klub nuclear-capable cruise missiles which had 300 km range in IN service due to MTCR treaty. So, it effectively makes it a Nuclear attack sub with all intent and purpose - however you might put it.

We dont have copy of agreement between the Russia and India, but it is widely belive that we will be allowed to have our own weapons system on board.

But it will also house some of the Russian weapons systems and they will be govern by MTCR.

Akula II - news and discussions

10/07/2009

KHABAROVSK, July 10 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Nerpa nuclear-powered submarine, which was damaged in a fatal accident during previous tests, resumed sea trials on Friday in the Sea of Japan, a spokesperson for the Amur shipyard said.

"The Nerpa nuclear submarine...has left a repair facility in the town of Bolshoy Kamen in the Primorye Territory and is headed for a series of sea trials," Marina Radayeva said.

On November 8, 2008, while the Nerpa was undergoing sea trials in the Sea of Japan, its on-board fire suppression system went off, releasing a deadly gas into the sleeping quarters. Three crewmembers and 17 shipyard workers were killed. There were 208 people, 81 of them submariners, on board the vessel at the time.

Following the repairs, which cost an estimated 1.9 billion rubles (about $60 mln), the submarine was cleared for final sea trials before being commissioned with the Russian Navy and leased to the Indian Navy by the end of 2009.

India reportedly paid $650 million for a 10-year lease of the 12,000-ton K-152 Nerpa, an Akula II class nuclear-powered attack submarine.

Akula II class vessels are considered the quietest and deadliest of all Russian nuclear-powered attack submarines.

India Anticipates Russian Sub Delivery by Year-End

Published: 10 Jul 2009 09:53

NEW DELHI - India is hopeful that Russia will deliver by year's end two Akula-class nuclear powered attack submarines, Indian Defence Ministry sources said.

Moscow has told the Defence Ministry that the subs should be delivered after sea trials are completed this year, Defence Ministry sources said. The Indian Navy had been apprehensive about delivery of the submarines after an Akula-class submarine built for India met with an internal accident last November, killing three crew members.

India has contracted for two Akula-class submarines over the past four years.

India's indigenous nuclear submarine, the Advance Technology Vehicle (ATV), also is to be commissioned in 2010, said Indian Navy sources. The ATV will be capable of launching nuclear-capable missiles, completing the third leg of India's nuclear-delivery systems.

India leased a Russian Charlie-II nuclear-class vessel in 1988 for three years, which formed the basic design of the ATV.

India's Navy needs the nuclear submarines to counter the growing Chinese threat in the Indian Ocean, said Zack Mathews, retired Indian Navy commodore and independent defense analyst.

Nuclear-powered submarines, with their greater speed, power and range, are effective for sudden strikes and to provide fast and stealthy protection from attacks, added Mathews.
